I think this will force AW's hand (well it should).

Such a shame for Theo. MIsses the rest of the season and the World Cup. Gutted for him esp since he was in some nice form. Having done 3 ACL's myself, its a long way back and i suspect we wont see him for closer to 9 months.

It's a real shame, he was just starting to hit some form too. :(

You'd think the Spuds fans that abused him and threw coins at him would feel bad, but no. There's a few around who are saying it's karma for the 2-0 gesture  (not here, but in the Twitterverse and other places)

Le Boss really needs to get the cheque book out now. With Theo gone for the season and Lord Bendtner out for a while, we need some back up, and badly.

When it comes to someone that isn't cup tied, then yeah it becomes a problem.
Not to be all negative, and I realize we beat them there before, but I don't think we were gonna beat Bayern anyway.
Can't really think of a striker off the top of my head (there is one of course, but no chance).

I didn't really take CL into much consideration, had more focus on the league.
Might be worth getting someone on loan or on the cheap that isn't cup tied, and then splash some cash on someone, that unfortunately will probably be cup tied, but will help us in the league.

Not saying it was easy, not like it's Football Manager, but if someone is there and even if they cost a bit, we've gotta go for it.
Poor Giroud, got nothing now.

Easy to say that, but there needs to be someone out there that good who is gettable and not cup tied first. This is the January window, not the summer one.

Can you name a target man style CF who is good enough for us, not cup tied, and actually on sale?

Mario Gomez - edit: Injured as well

I can't but I wonder if we'll flirt with a forward option like Martinez or Pato, or make another attempt on Benteke.

Martinez wants to come to us, having a great year but dunno if he'll replicate that form in the EPL.
Benteke is proven, but been injured this season and probably a big reason why he hasn't scored too many.
Got a penalty and a rebound from his own penalty against us didn't he?
Pato would be quite risky but relatively cheap.

Then again, it's just all these figures been given by the media, have no clue of what's going on really.
I'd like Benteke, but think he'll be overpriced.
Cruyff14 time for you to scout some players on FM? kgo.

Yeah Benteke would still be somewhere in the vicinity of £20m but has been injured and out of form. Can't see Wenger paying that. Pato would be about half the price but again, injury prone.

I agree that the focus shouldn't necessarily be on champions league, I wouldn't be worried if a player was cup tied (assuming a champions league forward was available). But anyway, we do have a genuine attempt at the title here, with a crucial period to tackle in Feb/March against other title contenders and Munich in Europe.

This is notoriously where we've fallen apart in recent seasons, we've been in decent positions in the hunt for a couple of different trophies but then bang, we get bundled out of them all within a week or two. The squad is a lot stronger than in recent seasons and does have some genuine depth in midfield to cover the loss of say Walcott, but another knock to Giroud and we're fvcked.

Take a punt on Pato. If it works out we have a star and if it doesn't then we take a small hit like we did with Gervinho.

Still only 24 and has plenty of time to turn his career around and who better to help him achieve that than Wenger.

Ronaldinho on loan for 6 months...

i think it will be something out of the box. Costa wont happen, neither will benzema and i presonally think we need someone quick and nippy to compliment Giroud not be an alternative.

Pato isn't a CF though, he might be good cover for Walcott on the right if he pulls his head out but he's not cover for Giroud.

You need to be looking at hit up CF types like Giroud and Bendtner, but good ones - we're not going to change system 2/3 of the way through a season. Can even be cup tied if you want, would just mean we need to rely on Bendtner in the Champions League if Giroud went down.

Someone to complement him doesn't cover him though, which has been the point all season, even more so with Bendtner injured now and probably leaving end of season anyway.

Is Drogba fit, or past it like Eto'o? Because he wants out of Galatasaray apparently.

I still cannot understand why we wouldn't just go for safety and grab Berba!! Proven scorer and comes on the cheap. Imagine the triangles he could work with Ozil, Ramsey etc.

Because, once again, he doesn't fit into the same part of our system that Giroud or Bendtner do. We already have lots of players who can play left, right and central and make great triangles with each other, and they're all much in better form with much better attitudes.

NT Rabbit - you are right on reflection. We need a like for like and someone sharp, nippy as an alternative would be a luxury and more likely in the Summer.

In that mould - who really is there...

You're making out that our 'system' is only suited to certain types of players when really its pretty simple and adjustments can be made with relative ease. If you get someone like Pato he can still hold the ball up, he just won't be as Giroud is. However he would allow us to get in behind defences with his speed and movement through central areas and is better suited to playing with an Ozil who will be able to pick him out. Whereas with Giroud he's a focal point whereby the ball comes into him and our runners (Ramsey,Walcott) run in behind the space that has been made available from the centreback being forced to come out to guard Giroud so he cant turn and shoot or dribble.

Essentially the likes of Cazorla, Wilshere and Ozil would be better suited to a Pato type of striker whereas Podolski, Ramsey and Walcott as more suited to a Giroud type of striker. The argument could also be made that right now we need a Pato more then we do a Giroud seeing as both Ramsey and Walcott are injured.

In any case their different styles of play is needed so that we are not so one dimensional. Keep in mind that if Pato were to come which at this stage isn't likely then he would be most likely be Giroud's back up and would be an alternative to Giroud for when the style of play that we play with Giroud on the pitch isn't working.

Benteke scored twice I believe against us on opening day? Geez that seems a long time ago now.

I think Pato would be worth rolling the dice on. There was talk we already had a bid rejected a few weeks ago.

Our system relies on a front man acting as a receiver and a distributor back to our on running midfielders and wingers, or alternately someone as fast as Walcott to receive the ball while running past the centrebacks. That is the way we were playing this year, and we have looked at our worst when nobody has been able to run past the defence, and Giroud has not been able to effectively distribute.

This is the way we play, and the formation we play. Getting in someone who is a striker or winger as cover for a true CF is not a slight tactical change up during a game, it's a fundamental change to the way we set up - and 'relative ease' is not something that anyone could or should apply to a fundamental formation change this far into the season.

As much as we need another CF, I'm not sure there's anyone out there worth getting that can be gotten. Likeliest result is that we rely on what we have, and get someone genuinely good in the summer window when transfers of that ilk actually happen.

Basically, expect to see Giroud back next week, hopefully nothing happening to him before Bendtner returns, Podolski to cover otherwise, and young Gnabry to get a lot more starts in place of Walcott on the right with Ryo on the bench. We then get some pace back when the Ox returns to match fitness in a month, give or take. Remember, we're down to 3 comps now, no League Cup fixtures to jam in as well.
