Here it is! The final slam of the year from Flushing Meadows in New York:

131.jpg

Again, a number of questions are to be anwsered heading into another two weeks of paradise for tennis fans. The US Open always provides great drama and atmosphere especially with the Arthur Ashe Stadium filled up at night. The big stories heading for the men and women are:

Men:
- Federer the favourite after good weeks in toronto and Cincy? Can he make up for last year's final?
- Nadal, this the slam that has got him in the past, will he be able to turn around the scratchy form from the lead-up events.
- Murray, time to win a slam yet? Toronto a sign that it could be happening.
- Djokovic, again, when will he man up against a top player?
- Berdych, the real deal now? Two latest slam results say so but not the greatest results leading in although could of beaten Federer in toronto
- Roddick, keen to improve on that loss he had to Isner last year
- Soderling, is he a threat for the title?
- Who are the darkhorses? Nalbandian, Fish and Baghdatis all having fantastic results leading up to the hardcourt swing

Women:
- Wozinacki, the top seed? Won Montreal so is in good stead for winning a title here
- Clijsters, is she fit and prepared for a crack at defending her title?
- Williams, who can predict how she's going to play but she's starting to lose it a bit.
- Jankovic, always seems to be a pretender
- Stosur, injury issues coming in, took her a big effort just to win today, horrible result last year, can she can do deep despite this?
- Schiavone, one slam wonder? Looks obivous right now
- Azarenka, hit very good from early on in the hardcourt swing, she has the ability to maybe win one of these, could be her eyar
- Sharapova, game is slowly coming togetehr and looks to even be a contender now again
- Kuznetsova, can never completely coutn her out given how some of her slam results have been and the fact she won San Diego a few weeks ago but she's always consisent.
- Oudin, how are American tennis fans going to cope when she loses first round after all the hype that has been following her for the past year despite her awful results.

Those a few of the stories there, there are others that will come up in the draw as well when it comes out Friday morning (ESPN2 has a show at 2am Friday for it, probably be streams for anybody nothign to do at 2am on a friday morning, I know i'll be asleep).

Australians:

8 competing here in the main draw with qualifiers still to come:

Men:
Lleyton Hewitt (32)
Peter Luzcak
Carsten Ball (WC)

Women:
Sam Stosur (5)
Jarmila Groth
Anastasia Rodinova
Alicia Molik
Sophie Ferguson (WC)

Obivous, the main ones are again Hewitt and Stosur with Groth and Rodionova also having great results over the last two slams, hoping for good draw for Sophie and Carsten. While, I have no idea whats going on with Alicia. Review it mroe for the Aussies when the draw comes out.

TV Coverage: All on Fox Sports, they send a little team up there, pretty good coverage, Nine have got rid of their coverage obivously but as always livestreams will be available. USOpen.org has free live streaming if you know how to get around the US blocker. But other sites will be eaiser.

Looking forward to another 2 great weeks and no sleep.

Qualifying has also started this week with a number of Australians competing:

Men:
R1:
G. Jones def. Roger-Vasselin (4) 2-6, 6-4, 6-0
J.Millman def. Kirillov 7-5, 6-1
B. Tomic vs. Ilhan (1)
M. Matosevic vs. Beck (3)
B. Klein vs. Kim
Machado (10) def. N. Lindhal 6-2, 6-4
Reynolds def. Guccione 7-6, 6-3

Women:
R1:
J. Dokic (2) vs. Robson
O.Rogowska vs. S. Peers

LOL at the women's drawing. Dokic should beat Robson with ehr form but it still generates laughter there. And Rogowska and Peers have been non-existent for a little while, huge opportunity for one of them to get 40 points, maybe time for Olivia to get some confidence.

Nice win by Greg Jones too, I can't see any of them qualifying even if Jones has opened up the draw for himself now.

Really looking foaward to this one. The only thing i hate is that play starts at 1am! For those of you that havent seen Robson she is a really good player and Dokic will have to do it tough if she is to win that one. Pretty suprised to see Lindhal lose so easily.

Awesome stuff matt! :thumbsu: I'm starting to get pumped, although I think Federer will win so that disheartens me.

I bolded a few things that are most noticable.

Firstly, I love the US Open. I know it sounds a bit ridiculous but to me it's probably even ahead of Wimby, as you said the drama and atmosphere is amazing. There's always wild results and lots of tension in those night matches, for some reason for me it's just 2 weeks of probably the best tennis outside of the AO.

I actually think Roddick has a slim chance. Ok he probably won't win, but he did far better than I expected in Cincy and although he's been suffering from illness and best of 5 might wear him down, I think he'll enjoy coming into the USO with virtually no hype. I guess we'll see.

Djokovic really needs to beat a big name at a Slam, it's been far, far too long. I think he'll make the Semi's but again crash to a big name.

I'm liking Azarenka's chances, I think she's due and as for Oudin, her ranking is going to take a huge hit after she crashes early! Wickmayer's might too as she's not in great form either.

LOL HEWITT IS IN FEDERERS SECTION AGAIN

This is just getting beyond ridiculous honestly..

Tomic won 6-0 2-6 6-3. Really good result. Didnt think he would get though it. Matosevic also won. Dokic lost to Robson 6-1 6-4. Thought she would have had a better chance to win that one. Klien and Ebden also lost.

Peter Luczak Vs Sergiy Stakhovsky in the first round. Tough match for Luczak i think he will lose that.
Casten Ball Vs Qualifier. Hopfully he can get through that and will take on Montanes in the second round most likely.
Lleyton Hewitt Vs Paul-Henri Mathieu. Hewitt should win that and take on Mayer or Ruffin in the second and should win that then play Federer.

Jarmila Groth Vs Maria Sharapova. Damn really was hoping Groth would get a kind draw because she can go deep in the Grand Slams but dont like her chances.
Alicia Molik Vs Qualifier. Molik should win but would have to play Jankovic in the second round. I think Jankovic will win the tittle though.
Sophie Fergurson Vs Qualifier. Sophie should get a win first up and then take on Schiavone in the second.
Sam Stosur Vs Elena Vesnina. Should get through that and then take on Rodionova in the second. Kleybonova and Dementieva and Clijsters in her section of the draw.
Anastasia Rodionva Vs Bojana Jovnovaski. Think she will get through that then loser to Stosur in the second.

Just doing a bracket and saw the players in her section, think she could go deep and offers value at around $30

Just an update on the results from qualies:

Tomic lost to Okun 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Disappointing result after beating the top seed, ah well, consistency will come with time. Greg Jones had a disappointing result as well after his good first round win, losing to Lojda 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

That leaves us with two Australians in the final round of qualies for a place in the main draw. John Millman beat Marinko Matosevic 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 for a match against Polansky, the Canadian, can't see him winning that sadly. While, young tiny Sally Peers got through after defeating Dentoni 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 and now faces Mamigata. Good to see her having nice solid results this year while our main young gun Rogowska can't win a match. Love to see one of those two through but can't see it happening.

Sally Peers was the only Australian to get through qualifying after her 3 set win. Really good result wasnt expecting that she would. John Millman lost in 3 sets. Also the guy that Luczak has to play in the first round has won the New Haven tittle. Lets hope he is tired and Luczak can have a win.:D

The order of play has been put on the US Open website with a few Australians in action on day one.

3rd Match on Louis Armstrong Staduim will be:
Sam Stosur VS Elena Vesnina. Play begins at 1:00am and there is a mens and womens match before that one.
Then on the same court at not before 7:00am is:
Lleyton Hewitt Vs Paul-Henri Mathiue. Really looking foward to that match.
Then second match on court 12 is:
Sally Peers Vs Aleksandra Wozniak. There is a mens match before that one.
The second match on court 15 is:
Anastasia Rodionova Vs Bojana Jovannovski. There is a womens match on before that.
The first match on court 16 is:
Sophie Fergurson Vs Marie Elena Camerin.
The third match on court 17 is:
Carsten Ball vs Milos Raonic.
So thats all the Australians for day one really looking foward to seeing how they go. Also looking foward to the night session with Venus Williams and Roger Federer in action other big names in action are Clijsters, Roddick, Safina, Daveydenko, Soderling and Ivanovic.
And this has to be said LOL at the organisers putting Melanie Oduin on first Athur Ashe cant wait to see what they do once she loses early again.

Great schedule, Sam on 3rd and Lleyton on 4th is very kind, won't be too horrible, 4am at the earliest, probably more like 5am, going to be much worse throught this fortnight.

I'll post the draws up tomorrow in the posts and have maybe a little preview. I'm sure Drummond has got something up as well.

And a big well done to Sally Peers, qualifing for her first MD appearance in a Slam. Can't say enough how impressive that is considering she hasn't had to be given a Wc like most others.

To be honest i havent seen alo of Sally Peers. I know her ranking is about the 200 mark, But what do you think her chances of winning against Wozniak first up? Also look foward to your preview.

I have only seen her play a couple of times (wimbledon junior matches i think they were...) but a small girl who generally seemed to be more about fighting for every point than any real power. She's defiantely not super fit or that consistent or anything. Didn't think there was too much there, well, not enough to qualify for a Slam. I would give her a shot against Wozniak only because she seems to be in terrible form but should be just way too strong.

I feel sorry for this girl. The Americans have incredibly high expectations of her and she's sort of trying to tell them not to expect anything yet. She hasn't won 2 matches in a row in a few months or something. They've got no one after the Williams sisters basically, so they're starting to worry.
The scheduling basically reeks of what they did at AO this year when they put Dokic on for the first night match in rnd 1 and she was shit house and had a mental collapse.

Sure it's a good line-up tomorrow as far as the Aussies is concerned but what the heck is with only one of the top 4 mens seeds playing? Would've liked to see Djokovic play and at least complete the bottom half of the draw. Tuesday is going to be loaded with Rafa, Murray and Novak all to play, I'm guessing Nadal will be on the night session and the other two to be on during the day with Wozniacki.

Edit: Just remembered, the US Open splits up the first round matches over Mon-Wed don't they? Typical, they have to be different...

I'll get a preview up tomorrow.
