And we lost the 2nd half 3.5 to 4.6

Yep. But we kept at it, didn't shut up shop and stop defending like we did against the Suns in 2018, and made things difficult for ourselves and pulled off some good footy. That's closer to what we'll have to deal with if we're ever gonna go far.

Call me nuts but one thing I would like to do is eliminate goalless quarters. Ideally we score 4 goals a quarter but that's 3-4 years away from happening

Probably has something to do with the ebbs and flows of the team. We go full attack sometimes where we can score heavily but also leak goals. Then we go full defensive where we starve ourselves of scoring opportunities. The important thing is to play ourselves through those shifts so that we can find that balance.

The second half we did this, but as noted, we lost the second half.

Mills > Thurlow
Heeney > Wicks
Buddy > McLean
Rampe > Melican/Aliir
Hewett > Clarke

Not too difficult.
Clarke has been named in our best for 3 weeks running. I really hope he’s starting to win a few over.

His positive attributes are becoming more and more apparent as he gets a solid run of games.

Reckon he’s best 22.

Just looked at the stats and Fox had 8 tackles, Blakey had 515 metres gained, McLean had 82% TOG compared to Reid's 78%, Taylor 7 score involvements

Disagree but even if that were the case, do you think for a second that it's a tough choice between he and Hewett?

I think it's fair to want to be recognised for our attacking intent. We wouldn't have won for the 5 second quarter.
But you are right

I think most people can see that we are far more attacking in intent, as we can put on bursts of goals like the second quarter but our team defence is still the basis from where our game style is built upon. We give up far more Inside 50's than we gain going the other way despite our far more attacking intent and it takes a great defensive effort to hold those number back on a weekly basis.

We control the ball and look for the best options via the corridor when going forward rather than just kicking long to a contest along the boundary.

So while its good Horse has us playing differently, we are still a defence first team but one that now has the game plan and weapons to rebound quickly to hurt teams on the scoreboard that don't take their chances. In time as our midfield develops, we improve our ruck position and we then win more clearances and start to win more inside 50 than we give away, we will have built the platform for our next premiership challenging team starting in defence.

So to suggest our defence had no impact on the result as wolftone suggested above is wrong. But hey he expected us to be smashed today so maybe he isn't the best judge.

Nope, agreed that if forced to pick one over the other, Hewitt wins out every time. He’s in our best 10.

I just think Clarke, at 23 years of age, is developing a bit like Luke Parker. He’ll never be the most skilful, but he plays hard, bloods-style footy & I’m happy to have him in red & white.

Oh boy. Huge call. I have my qualms with Parker but his ability to win a contested ball is pretty bloody high. Clarke is good at getting cheapies, as in presenting to a team-mate in trouble and getting the hand-ball receive or short kick and then doing the same himself. He is very suited to games such as today, which suited uncontested players as there was plenty of time and space beyond the ball-carrier. He had 22 touches today but only 7 of them were contested. You wouldn't want to take him in to a final.

Ah well, if he gets a new contract, we can compare notes in 2 years & see how things have panned out.

Personally, I’d love to see him in the GF side as the Swans feature in the 2023 decider!

I'd take him to a final if he can shut down an oppo mid

Loved our pressure this game. It was so nice to see us not all chase the ball every contest. Players were hanging out the back of the pack waiting for the free ball to come out. I think a lot of our issues come from this. When we don't commit too many to the contest and allow outside players to get the ball in space they create. Having Kennedy and Parker play the way they did on the inside makes it so much easier.

Loved seeing Blakey burst through from midfield. His field kicking is wasted if he isn't playing on the wing. Still tries a bit too much razzle dazzle but I don't mind him playing with confidence.

I thought the ref's tried hard to get them back in it in the last quarter.

We look so much more dangerous when attacking with speed. Florent, Blakey, Rowbottom, even Taylor at times breaking with speed through the middle. I must admit that I really enjoyed the effort Taylor put in, he's got good acceleration and if he gets in better shape during the off season he could be a decent signing. Jury is still out though.

Mcinerney was awesome. Great second and third efforts, great pressure, good goals, exemplary work rate. This kid looks the goods!

Really liked all your comments, although it’s good to remember that we have umps. I’d add that Wicks is an incredibly hard worker. His second and third efforts are fast and ferocious. He may will be a keeper as our defensive forward. And speaking of warriors, the often under-rated Sinclair is held together with tape and just keeps competing game after game. Where would we be without him?

It's always easier to drop people off a loss, props to longmire for not culling the group and backing some of the younger blokes
He's moved them around instead.
Hayward back, then on a wing-ish
Fox on bigger players
Blakey on a wing
McCartin back
Thurlow forward - wing
AA - forward and ruck
Now Ollie has gone forward to try and find a role that's going to work.

Hate to say it in some ways (a history of me thinking he was shite) but Horse has had a good year. Shown positional and tactical flexibility.

The self-loathing on the Demons board is kinda funny.

But it’s a bit hard not to feel sorry for Dees supporters. Must be hard.

Melbourne are in a tricky spot. They've been so poor the media goes crazy whenever they get a win that validates them. But then that pressure of attention and expectation cripples them.

They're literally burdened by the ghosts of their past.
