- Melbourne's defensive pressure and organisation was not as good as Port's and Fremantle's. But I think we showed decent composure with our kicking into the forward line and we had some run through the middle.

- Pleasing to see good performances from our middle/lower tier of players. Early in the season we relied a lot on our top players like Papley, Parker and Rampe to perform. But in recent games we have had more contributors and they have had impact with winning the ball, defensive pressure and creating scoring opportunities.

-Taylor gets criticised for his workrate and fitness. But I thought he looked promising with his ball use. I think he is useful at half forward and balances out more workmanlike players like Wicks and Bell. I think at various points this season, we needed a experienced creative player at half forward who could keep possession or kick an unexpected goal.

- I think we tired in the last quarter. I am not sure how that will impact selection for the next game. Also fringe players like Wicks, Clarke and Mcinerney who might have got rotated out played good games and might keep their spots.

- I would rather play well and win games toward the end of the season even if it costs us our early draft position. You could see the effect on the players to play well and get a win.

Feel like of our OOC players, Wicks, Fox and Clarke have really helped their cause in recent weeks. Ling and McLean might also have done enough.

Conversely, becoming harder to see Ronke, Maibaum or Stoddart getting another contract.

Bell, Foot and Thurlow .... all look 50/50.

100% improvement over Bell imo

Absolutely. That goal Wicks roved early on would've somehow ended up smothered or out on the full if it were Bell.

Wicks has got great small forward nous and a four-quarter work rate is something we can ill afford to let go at this point.

I see it as a balance.

Players like Elijah and Lewis Taylor seem to have more potential attacking threat in the forward line but provide less defensive pressure. So it seemed a better balance to pair them up with someone like Wicks or Bell. (Bell has been flat recently, but was making some good tackles at half forward a few games back). Wicks has been consistently good with his pressure acts and tackling.

Bell didn’t show much of anything.

Every player needs to show defensive pressure.

Not your fault , but organisation is a word creeping in to Aussie rules and it shouldn't , it's the way soccer talks. Next it will be McIinerney got a brace.

With Mills missing it was outstanding

I think our defensive group functions the way Richmond's whole list has over the last few years, where no matter who is in there they know their role, they know their system inside out, and the standards they need to meet. Aliir and Melican have some shockers here and there, but they both more often than not adhere to those standards. Something about the way we pass those standards down from one generation of defenders to another. That something is probably Horse, who himself got it from Roos.

Wondering where I'm going to fit Mills Franklin, Hewett, heeney and Rampe into this side..
By the time next season starts you'd have to say JPK will be struggling for a spot in the best 22. His body is getting old and slow. Can see him making way for Hewett.

I liked Aliir playing the third tall. Was good to see him play his natural game

Wicks is a gun. His form has stamped Ronke's papers IMO. Exactly what you want from. a small forward. Plenty of pressure, good crumbling ability & always a team player. His shepherding and off the ball work is the best in the comp

Clarke had another good game. I'm a big believer in Clarke and yesterday showed why. That performance wasn't a fluke and he's still got room for improvement.

Blakey in the midfield is starting to click. I strongly believed he was a key forward but have changed my opinion

The lizard has fantastic acceleration.
Strong through the hips as well.

The following players aren’t in my first selected side but I’m perfectly comfortable with them being selected.

McInerney, Melican, McLean, Clarke, Taylor, Wicks, Bell, Ling, Stephens.

Throw in the as yet untried Gould, O’Connor, Campbell, and Gulden and we’re developing some serious depth.

You can argue the selections, but the depth aspect remains.

Good to see McInerney get some rewards. I still do not understand why he was dropped earlier in the season.

He is contracted to 2022 but many others expiring contracts need to show their merit before lists are cut. I suspect it revolves around that.
