I also hear you may be wining and dining some time this week? Do u need some advice? I am the king of this kind of thing.

De La Salle, but having said that, their up and down like a yo yo in recent years, I think they enjoy the spoils of a flag every 2 years. Their 2's are good also which provides the depth. OE & OB have talent but depth is not that good.

Mr Picnic, I need advice, I'm taking a plumper on a date tonight and I hear you are very experienced in this practice

Another season defining round for many teams this weekend. I've been given Saturday off so I'm flying up to QLD this afternoon to watch wath my beloved Lions take on the Dees tomorrow night at the GABBA. I then fly back first thing Sunday morning and it will be straight to HQ where I will wave the flags when the 3rd place Bloods take on the 8th place Trinity. Should be a one sided affair but if the rain continues to fall it will give the boys from Bulleen some hope (Show us your rain dance Scribe ). My obvious tip is the Bloods.

In other A grade matches, The Students travel to HQ to take on the fired up Cardinals. This is the last roll of dice for the Cardinals as a loss will find them 3 games out of the top 4. The Cardinals to get up in a thriller. Old Xavs host the OC for the Hawkins/Mollard Cup. Xavs by plenty (Sorry OC ). OM's host SKOBS at the Junction. Both side's would rather a nil all draw and spend the weekend at Bulla but OM's will take home the 4 points in this clash. The final match see's the Eagles take on Bernies at Bulleen. Eagles far too strong.

B Grade action hots up this week when the Bombers travel to De La for match of the round. This game means too much to the Bombers which should get them over the line. The Tonners host the Tigers, but unfortunately it will be Benny MOF drowning his sorrows on Saturday night as Brighton keep a top 2 finish alive ( 21st Century again Benny? ). Mazenod host Caulfield but it the Fields will be more desperate and take home the 4 points. Old Ivanhoe travel to Whitefriars, who have lost the plot. Old Ivanhoe by heaps and in the final match NOBS to surprise MHSOB but only if SMC plays.

If your plane is able to hook and drag some tropical rain-clouds down from up north and sit them over HQ from say 10.00am to 5ish, that'd be sensational.

The Big Cat is certainly due for a bag, his only decent one being 5 lucky ones against my mob, inspired by heckling from behind the goals.
Conditions may not suit a marking forward however. I may pop down to HQ on Sunday to heckle. What number are you Scribe?

Mick Kavanagh was a superstar junior footballer, from what I know his interests lay outside of football for several years and now that he's concentrating on it, he's playing good footy.

Not a superstar junior, he tired out for Calder but was cut. Plenty of kids around the VAFA are like that too. Had a year in the 19's, was all focused, but did nothing.

Absolute nutter though. Skulled half a bottle of vodka on GF day last year, the best performance I've seen from him.

Just out of curiosity Scribe, just how old is too old because just looking at VAFA record now and I think you could actually be mistaken for an Under 19 player. How do you keep such a youthfull complexion?

Mental age - 20

I deny ever using Oil of Ulan but find falling flat-faced into the Elsternwick Park centre (when wet) can be a good substitute for a mud-pack.

The debate between the grades is one that you could go on for ages.

I for one, have played in every section from D1 to A , the difference is the depth, in D Grade, a few gun players will see you promoted, a couple of extra gun players will get you through C section. Once you get to B section and particularly A Section, you really need upwards of 30 high quality players at your club to see you succeed, you can't afford to carry one player in a senior game, there is nowhere to hide. As they say, you're only as good as your 21st/22nd player.

As SKOB have discovered, recruiting a couple of guns (McKee/Garlick) won't even help, you need to bolster the ranks at the other end of the scale. Old Hailebury are a good example of a very balanced side, with a couple of proven matchwinners (O'Farrell & Corrigan)

Thanks OC, great post. I always baulk at the depth issue, though. Has anyone ever considered that depth is purely an odd term for number of quality players.

So, essentially, to succeed, you must be a good team. To succeed at a higher level, you must be a better team.

Many rockets have been built this way.

Reds win all 5 grades for only the second time this year, this time against Old Mentonians. Seniors conversion rate was poor, which resulted in no bathing of opposition for a change.

Reserves got up in a very close match, direct turnabout of the previous meeting where Old Mentonians snapped the game up in the dying moments.

"Happy 50th birthday Reds!" I wonder what he's celebrating now? Maybe a trip to Kinglake for a youth camp with a can of powdered soft drink? Waste of the concentrate.

Both Clubbies teams got up, and even the U19s, who are having a horror season, snuck in for a win.

Ladder possies are, respectively, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4rd and 4th.

Other results of note, Prahran keep the charade up, Old Carey oddly enough get done by Bulleen-Templestowe, Glen Eira get their first win of the season against the club the pretend Prahran cobber thought was the only tough club in the comp, and YVOB continue to drop off. Every match an upset, if you count that the Reds only won by 5 goals.

Banyule and Bentleigh lose by 15 and 10 goals respectively. To all who come to this happy place. Welcome.

Must say the Marcellin v St. Bernards game yesterday was quite a contest...despite what the final score shows.

And it was great to be back in A Grade. Feel sorry for Nick Mitchell...guy should have retired at the end of last year to be honest (his knee is a worry), but, with all the numbers dropping off out there, least he can still play quite well.

O'Farrell, Corrigan and Langford-Jones again did the damage while the Big Cat kicked 8 for the vanquished in a fantastic display. Ramsden was also dangerous up forward slotting 3.

Brett Trollope's game was nothing short of outstanding. Frankly, if we'd manged to keep him and Laz Siapantas undr control, then we'd have been further in front at half time, and probably ahead at the last change. However, Haileybury had more petrol in the tank in the last 15 minutes and the 87-83 scoreline ballooned out. Seniors can look forward to the return/inclusion of Anthony Kenna and perhaps Kristian Butler, who both got through the early game with little trouble. I think we need a couple of speedy left-footers to match the Scotch running brigade!!

How was your weekend date OC? Sorry i couldnt give you some dating tips in time, just so busy all weekend. Didn't even get to Saturday's game, then missed catching up with the boys for a great evening of beers, footy and cricket on Saturday night and again had to bypass the Sunday afternoon drinking session with the lads as well.

Mobbenflunker still seems very confident down in D grade. My boys were very stiff against he Sharks, some questionable umpiring decisions late in the game apparently proved costly.

Not a bad charade. After two floggings in Round 1 and 2 the Two Blues have lost just one game to Carey after being 6 goals up at three quarter time and beaten every other side in the competition, including the Reds "on a bad day."

Heard Jono Dixon played a blinder for Collegians and the siren sounded a split second before he took a mark 35m out dead in front - they should've won.

Jono was pretty good, as was Cam "Sworth" Unsworth who dominated in only his second game back from a knee reco. Xavs fell in with a lucky goal to Scotty Mollard off the pack.

Can somebody tell me why Xavs play at the muddy sh*it hole at Toorak Park when they play their Cluib XVIII at Victoria Park....? Go figure.

The Big Cat is back, he must have been inspired by big Nathan Thompson on Sat night. Take note VAFA rep side selectors...
