VAFA General Discussion

You could start as late as August 15.

9 Round comp with the top two in a standalone final on Oct 18.

Just lay that out as a plan. Wait for the juniors to return playing in Mid-July, and if that all goes well, gives you 4 weeks to prepare for a half-season of play.
The problem is that if one player/coach/volunteer from any division tests positive, the house of cards comes down. The VAFA doesn’t have such liberties as floating fixtures like the AFL. Just passing on what I’ve been told and that was that the vote would be result in a “NO”.

Most clubs have been back training for a month & strict protocols have produced excellent results. I believe an August 1st start date to coincide with the VFL will be discussed. VAFA won't let a bunch of morons out NW influence their decision.

All clubs and the VAFA have done a fantastic job IMO. It’s the fallout and impact that one case would bring at a time when cases, most importantly, community transmission, are on the rise.
Interested to hear opinions on how people in the forum would feel if the competition ran for three weeks and then was cancelled. The financial impact would be much worse than cancelling the season tonight.

August 15? I think we have stretched this as far as we can to get a season up and going. I think in reality the time has run out and the unpredictable nature around the easing of restrictions leaves government little to no room to manoeuvre. August 15 is a week or so from the start date for traditional finals?

I think most would agree that as of last Friday the VAFA board were going to give the green light to a season starting on July 25

Appreciate things have developed over the weekend but can they change their minds and terminate the season that quickly? I think the right thing to do is postpone the decision by 2 weeks, push back the starting date to the latest date possible (August 1 or 8) to give ourselves the best possible chance to get the season up and running.

Why not just say we are sticking to the 25th July start and have the caveat of the Governments position (our position at a health level) on July 12. No harm no foul. The only thing that needs to get tidied up in the interim is player movement protocols. Calling it off today is just giving up.

Even better...

However, I think the VAFA will be gun shy (on saying yes) and won't want to make headlines tonight.... By postponing a decision, they can let the dust settle. Even with the latest tightening of restrictions, the Government's protocols still allow community sport to begin contact training a July 13 and competition on July 20.

Play on!

No they don’t, new announcement today has the 13th and 20th July dates removed.

It’s all over and 2 weeks after the protests hell broke loose and it’s goodbye football.

If only someone could have seen this coming...

do you have a link to the changes you suggest were made today.

The VAFAs communication through this whole thing has been nothing short of disgraceful.
In fairness it's been a moveable feast and they have had a July 25 prospective start out there for awhile.

Seems from the Hun today we won't have to wait much longer for a decision one way or the other.

If you think the VAFA communication has been poor, what do you think of the State Government and Local Council?
No one has any answers in the present nor may have for many months. All leagues are merely processing information when (if) they receive.

The state Government has had a tough job and have done well.

Thanks for that but i believe nothing has changed given this is the heading "Information about easing of restrictions for sport and exercise from 11:59pm on 31 May."
The next date for Government commentary is July 12th. I cannot find anywhere that has altered the current dates of July13th and July 20th. There has been no alteration to the return to play for Under 18's

There have been some significant changes to the Government restrictions for community sport overnight, which you can access via the link below on the DHHS website. The biggest change is the dates for contact training and competition for adults have been removed and replaced with the information below.
From mid-July
  • Further announcements on return to contact training and full-contact competition for adults will be made in July."

The latest I hear is that the 4 leagues left are now trying to push back 2 weeks and start on August 1. Makes sense to me . If it doesn't work , pull the pin on July 13.

In what capacity would the season exist?
9 game season plus finals..
Would all grades play as normal?
Or would some grades combine?
Some communication around this would be good. How a season best case scenario would look..
There is going to be inevitable outbreaks post easing of the restrictions.
Never been a vaccine for covid related viruses.. imagine same will occur here with covid 19.
A week ago the season was on.
In two weeks time these active cases will have subsided again.
Main issue is that there will be cluster of outbreaks from time to time this will be a reality for a long time. Without a vaccine.
Clubs are practicing hygiene safety protocols but reality is that some players will pick this up if a season goes ahead Aug 1-mid.
If they decide to wait two weeks before making a decision we need to know what the season could look like best case? Ie would it be all grades, combining grades, what would happen if a team had a player contract the virus.. need some guidelines or leadership or something to work with or plan for..understand it’s a difficult situation but there needs to be some form of leadership or communication from the VAFA as the biggest competition outside AFL/VFL in vic.

It’s got SFA to do with the protests. Seriously can’t you read English?

Government announcement in the weekend made it CRYSTAL clear it was people having excessive numbers at family gatherings and going to work having been told to stay home which has caused these clusters.

So what would you have done , are you related to that goose Tim Smith

i would have communicated with the clubs a lot more, taken the time to get to understand the struggles of each club and help them navigate thru those issues.
The silence from them has been deafening.
They could have shone thru this but haven’t.

Smithy they have communicated with all clubs . They are restricted by what all levels of Government decides . If your club is not communicating that's their fault , not the VAFA !
