Anyone have an early "news and views" for the upcoming 2018 season? Must be something out there to report.

Ayce Cordy to Uni Blues. John Holmes (the big American ruckmen who played a handful of senior games with St. Kilda) is playing at Xavs, as is ex Port mid Nathan Batsanis and ex Essendon and Northern Blues utility Alex Browne. Collegians have Taylor Hunt and George Burbury on board. Not sure about other arrivals or departures aside from Will Tardiff.

De La relying on solid retention from last year plus the return of some past players, including a recent B&F. A few decent young ones expected to step up including some who are/were in the TAC Cup and VFL system. I hear St Bedes have done some very solid recruiting including ex Blue Liam Sumner.

You can be sure that SKOBS will roll out some big-name recruits, but I have heard that Chris Cain will not be one of them. Sorry that’s about the extent of it from me. There was a whisper that Josh Gibson was going to play for Trinity but have heard nothing more on this. I’m sure there is other news.

Good to see Dan Richardson looking after his old xavs mate Luke Ball

Great get though. I dislike Essendon, but still a great appointment. Luke has been a pretty big player powerbroker in twilight of his career.
I don’t think Luke Ball would be homeless without Dan.

Only Tardiff gone. Got one more to be announced in a couple of weeks. Should be in their "top 10"...

Does anyone have any insight into how AFL listed players will be handled when they can't get a game at VFL level?

I.e. Freeman at the saints last year coming back from injury, plus 1 or 2 of their 5 ruckmen who played in the VFL development league throughout the year. Where will players in those situations play going forward?

Any chance we'll see AFL listed players running around in the VAFA or similar competitions?

But seriously, very interesting situations will arise if clubs have full lists and needing players to get game time.

Would very much doubt AFL clubs would allow their precious cargo to run around in the burbs or the bush. Far too much time and money invested to expose them to some unscrupulous plodder who wants to make a name for himself. Back in the day there was only ever seniors and reserves (assuming they were too old for the 19s). With full time players, armies of support staff and all the science involved I am sure they will find a way.

FWIW at Melbourne Uni Oval in the middle of winter?? Some talk around that first years may be able to play TAC but otherwise they'll be in the VFL.

They will all play VFL.

That’s part of the reason for the agitation about losing the Development League - minimal spots at VFL level for non-AFL listed players.

Fact is, AFL listed players do NOT have “release clubs”.

Rumours Bayside that the Tigers have picked up a dozen VFL players from around town whilst also raiding Beaumaris.

A "dozen VFL players"?..... What is in the water down there?

There’d be a few Development Level Zebras and a couple of TAC graduates attached to STBMT. A dozen sounds a lot, and I doubt many of them would have played much Senior VFL footy.

Off season mayonnaise perhaps?

No mayonnaise at all, Luke Beveridge has been sending every player possible their way via his contacts, even Stephen Tahana ex SANFL is heading their way. Will Be interesting to see how this merry go round of VFL listed players will affect team harmony week in week out with so many potential changes.

I also hear Gary Ayres tried to insist his VFL players new to the club had to sign up at Old Ivanhoe because he wanted them all to play together when not at Port? Interesting attempt by him and his good mate Gieschen to build the OI list. It worked well at Kew for three years but they’ve all left now.

Haven't heard that one.

So they get VFL listed at the Bulldogs and SBMT are their release club when not selected in the VFL team?
