My brother often recounts the story...he was involved in a major finance deal in the 90's...some major property and finance people needed to be briefed on a particular transaction. Everyone turned up on time...apart from Elliott, who rocked up 2 hours after everyone else...in the afternoon, post lunch...and he was absolutely p one five essed as a newt. Virtually incoherent...but the briefing went ahead. This detail then needed to be re-presented to some key government figures about an hour later...Elliott gets up in that session and recalls every last thing in minute detail and answers every question thrown at him.

For all his flaws, which there were many, he was certainly an impressive intellect when he needed to be.

My condolences go out to his family and it is sad to see him go.

I was never a fan of the man. In business he was a corporate raider that ended up controlling one of the largest companies in Australia and then lost it all. And there was more than a sniff of improper conduct in his business affairs.

As a Carlton fan I used to say that I supported the team in spite of him. I do conceed that he was a passionate Carton tragic who was great for the club in the early days but, just like his business career, he did leave the club in a poorer state than when he arrived.

For all those singing his praises as a Carlton man and as a 'larger than life' character I'm not disagreeing with you but I just wanted to say that he was also a significantly flawed individual as well.

Balanced and well said.
Meet him a couple of times. Was a real character. Found him ok in person but was not a fan of his way of doing things in belligerent way in terms of corporate world and football world.
Did more harm that good to my club but he certainly loved football and tried to do what he thought was best, even if his thinking was flawed.
R.I.P Jack and condolences to your family

Just about sums up my feelings about him too. I can't forget it was under his watch that we built the Legends stand which cost us for decades, (because he acted on insider information) and cheated the salary cap which also cost us for decades.

Not a fan of the man, his philosophy, politics or methods, but he was undeniably a Carlton man through and through.

It seems like the close of a chapter that Jack exits as the New Carlton is born.

Condolences to his family.

Would have he won? I have no idea, I was too young at 9 years old to understand the full political climate at the time, I know Peacock went close in 1990, Elliot would of been something very different from him Howard and Hewson.
Hawke by the flemington straight, daylight running second...Elliot still in the gates. (a couple too many chardy's)

My story involving Jack was one night after a game, I was in the SC having a beer with a former St.Kilda 'hard man' and Jack hit on my wife.
He was always partial to "bed warmers", as he referred to the ladies.

He could read a room too. Anyone who was there at the 2002 AGM would recall how by-the-book he was that night, whereas the anointed president-to-be ruined his chances with a slightly arrogant address to the members, most of whom brought pitchforks and torches. He could turn the arrogance on and off when he really needed to.

I remember. Colin De Lutis - Disastrous performance. Did that lead to Collo becoming president? Shit.

one of my best ever days.

It was a fun couple of weeks for me too, with hooking up with a new girlfriend at the time and next week spending a two day/night party in Springvale finding out Melbourne Storm won the Grand Final, no one was really watching it though.
The AFL 99 Granny was also bit of a blur for me as well, watched it, but at 19 with a beautiful and fun new girlfriend at the time, had more things on my mind at the time.

Ah the precious memories of youth, thought they were going to last forever (as well as Carlton being thereabouts every year)
Least I still can clearly remember watching and enjoying the 87 and 95 Premierships when they happened on TV (had no father and Mother was busy working to keep me and my brother fed, clothed and educated, so couldn't start going to the footy till I was 16 by myself, but am fortunate to have such a wonderful, beautiful mother who worked so hard for us)

Now where was I? Ah yes, 99 Prelim final, one of the best times of my life.

Only thing that has come near to matching it since was the 2013 Elimination Final, of which I was there happy to say.
Nick Duigan should never have to pay for a drink in his life again !!! Great guy

I was there that night, De Lutis was terrible. It was always about getting rid of big Jack more so than getting in Collo.

Nobody has loved the club more than Jack, that's for sure.

I'll never forget the golden era he gave us, and the way he sung the tune while pumping his fist in sync with our song.

RIP big fella and thank you.
