MCG changing the name of the Great Southern Stand in his honour.

We really need to do a better job of giving our heroes their flowers while they are still here. Still, it's a nice touch.
In Warne's case wouldn't a slab and a packet of Winnies be the right thing?

A statement from President Andrew Bassat regarding the passing of Shane Warne

Shocked and saddened are wholly inadequate words to describe my feelings on the news this morning of the passing of Shane. The loss of someone so young, who lived life large and was loved by so many is just cruel and wrong.

To his family, Brooke, Jackson and Summer, Bridgette and Keith and Jason, the deepest sympathy from all of us at the St Kilda Football Club for your tragic loss. Brooke, Jackson and Summer – I know how important you all were to Shane, how much he loved you all and how proud he was of each of you.

The loss of Shane will obviously be felt so much further. For those of us lucky enough to call Shane a mate, and there were many, we have lost one of the most loyal, generous and decent friends we will ever have.

The cricket world has lost one of its best ever players, finest commentators and ambassadors. There are the many charities he quietly and enthusiastically assisted, the poker world that admired but feared a passionate and talented player, and I could go on and on.

And not just in Australia, but in India, US, the Caribbean and beyond, so many of us have lost someone we first admired for his cricket ability and competitiveness but then grew to love for his honesty, passion, humour and decency.

The Saints tribe has lost today one of its most passionate and committed members. As many know, Shane loved talking football and his love for the club was matched only by the quality of his insights. He put in so much – our last contact was on Sunday when I asked him, yet again, to do something to assist the club and he of course unhesitatingly agreed.

High on Shane’s wish list was that our club have sustained on-field success and win our second flag.

It grieves me so much to know that you will not be there for that mate but, now more than ever, all of us at St Kilda will be doing all we can to deliver your dream.

Farewell from all of us, Shane. You packed more into your 52 years than most of us could do in 20 lifetimes, but right now, we are wishing that we had you with us for so much longer.

St Kilda’s AFL and AFLW sides will wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence in memory of Warne during today’s respective matches against Essendon and Geelong.

Very sad news. You just feel awful for his family.

Grew up watching the great man, what made him even more awesome was that he was a passionate saints man. Sad that he never got to see us win a flag.

Nobody spun it like him and nobody ever will. One of the greats of sport. RIP to a legend.

Drinking for the great man.

Likewise with the odd dart too, it's what Warnie would have wanted.

Might get myself a dirty rotten pizza for dinner too in honour of the great man.

Nice to see so many tributes from around the world for the great man, from cricket and beyond. His skill was admired by all and he was clearly very well liked as a man. Though his life was relatively short, he will be remembered forever.

As Saints supporters we don't have a lot of premierships to brag about but we can still brag about the greatest ever bowler being a Saints supporter.

The two most talented cricketers in the World in my opinion, both Sainters,Warnie and Maxy.

I hope Maxy gets back in the test team soon, another bloke with a huge personality and skills to match.

"So, I’m sure many of you have heard my Shane Warne story, but for those who have not, here it is.

Round 4, 2013, St Kilda are playing Essendon and for the first time ever, I’m in a corporate box. Once we get in and sit down, we discover that Warney is in the box next to us. People in our box are taking photos of him, but I leave him alone.

Essendon towels St Kilda up for most of the first three quarters, but a late run at the end of the third quarter leaves the Saints about six goals down at three quarter time. It’s something I’ve seen the Saints do a thousand times, and 999 times nothing happens.

Anyway, just before the last quarter starts, I’m looking around and I manage to meet eyes with Shane. And he looks at me, and through two panes of glass, holds up two fingers and says “first two, first two”, indicating he thinks it’s game on if the Saints can kick the first couple of the final quarter.

And at that moment, I thought to myself “he’s just like the rest of us St Kilda tragics”. Addicted to the hope of something that never comes, like Charlie Brown returning to kick Lucy’s football once again.

He was the best cricketer I ever saw, and the best I will ever see. He was unlike anything we ever saw, and he was just like the rest of us.

Rest easy, Shane."

That's a terrific story, mate; something you can treasure for the rest of your life.

Our club is so very very special, amazing that his family chose to have his coffin draped in St Kilda scarves.
