He started the game very badly had a couple of terrible turnovers. But it was great too see him turn it around and contribute 4 goals, two in the 3rd quarter when we were really struggling at times. Very impressive game.

It's funny you know - after the first quarter I was thinking JVB stood out like dogs bollocks as lacking the class of the rest of his team mates.
Even 'workman-like' guys like DeBoer and McPhee provide a different kind of class the way they hit the contest at a million miles an hour and force turnovers, and as much as I admire JVB's work ethic he doesn't even have that sort of impact.
But then he bobs up and nails 4 crucial goals - and most of them weren't seagull goals either, he actually won genuine 1 on 1's to create them out of nothing. Kudos to him, he had a brilliant game and was crucial to our win.
I still think he's a fairly limited defensive player and this was just a game out of the box - but I'd certainly have him ahead of our other limited defensive player at the moment. Crowley seems pretty out of form (though I concede it's sometimes hard to tell whether guys like him are doing a good job or not).

I have no idea how he's managed to hold his spot thus far, but credit where credit's due.
He's simply not a good enough tagger for me, but loved his work as a defensive forward tonight. Kicked straight too!

His smother and collect for a shot on goal should be up for goal of the week...
1. Courage
Threw himself at the flight of the ball to smother. Reminded me of Deboers effort last year in the derby.
2. Poise
Didn't rush the disposal and took the extra second before dealing the blow..
3. Skill
The kick for goal was a beauty considering the angle and the pressure he was in.

Its amazing how a couple of goals change peoples opinions on him.
His skills with the ball below knees is still very poor,very fumbly.
Drops alot of marks an disposal still a worry.
Its just tonight he found himself down the opposite end an was able to get a few shots on goal an he got the job done.
Having said that ive pretty much always thought he deserved his spot as he is a negator, its not his job to get disposals his job is to keep his opponent away from action.
An he normally does that very well its just people see his mistakes with the ball an want him out.

Obviously Jvb benefited a lot from harveys decision to move forward because defensively he was and in my opinion has always been too costly.
A couple of good goals and on the end of a few which is a good sign but having watched the replay I think it was he who tackled grant with a last grasp effort otherwise It looked like grant was going to slot from 35 out. That turnover led to bradleys goal the other end to get us one point behind.

Was pretty unsure about him last year . This year he has shown some good stuff and not just tonight. He is one of a number of players who seemed to have gained confidence whilst playing this group.
This guy here, this is the guy.
At least you're a good sport (maybe the runner told him what you said about his game up to that point.)
That's 2 solid games in a row for him, hopefully this is a sign he's going to take his opportunities with both hands and provide that little bit more consistency & versatility to his game that'll see him hold his spot indefinitely.

Thought he was very good tonight, and was rewarded for his efforts at the ball (much like DeBoer was). Under rated for his marking skills, he also showed a fair turn of pace tonight, and as others have said he kicked straight at goal, which in our current situation is a fairly rare commodity!!
Did enough to suggest he may have a role against the Tigers smaller back pockets, but not enough to put himself ahead of Zunga or Crowley, which is really where he needs to be aiming...

Seriously good game last night after qtr time (still gotta tighten up a bit). You could have mistaken him for DeBoer last night such was his kamikaze attack on the ball and man. Good work young man

I posted after the Geelong game that his key strength was his ability to lock down a key small forward, but the weakness in his game was he didn't give enough in attack.
Thrilled to see him turn in such a great game, I think the key was giving him De Boer's role of defensive forward, I can't recall him playing this position much - he seems more comfortable in taking his chances closer to goal rather than acting as the link-man coming out of defence.

His better games have always been in the forward line. Just horrible coming out of defence. But those goals surprised the hell out of me. No idea how someone with such shocking field kicking can kick that well in front of goal.
Hopefully he'll gain some confidence from this and his field kicking will improve. And I hope he pushes Crowls out of the team by the end of the year unless Crowls improves dramatically. Crowley looked ten times slower than Ling in that game.

The thing that worries me most about Crowley is that I used to really back him in to get a goal, but this year he is shocking in front of goal. Absolutely awful.
All said, JVB's performance wasn't much better than Crowley's in the Port game last year, so let's not go writing off Crowley or putting too much expectation on JVB to do that kind of thing again.

No it was more just complete surprise for me that JVB could have an impact on a game like that. The goals didn't seem to be flukes either which shows promise in that capacity.
JVB's field kicking and dropped marks are still deplorable and generally very costly - his first quarter especially was typical of how damaging he is for all the wrong reasons. I hope we never see him in the backline again unless his field kicking improves dramatically, which it may with more confidence.
I've always been a Crowley fan but he seems to have lost five yards of pace this year. He is looking extremely slow which means he can't catch anyone to tackle them and isn't making it to enough contests, is also slow to get going or turn for goal when he does get the ball.
Having said that, he won't be dropped anytime soon. At present though, he just seems to be playing the role of Hase last year - a slow forward too slow to pressure the opposition. Only difference is, Hase was kicking goals and Crowley has forgotten how.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was the case. Which is weird in a way - imo some players can take an absolute screamer, run down an opposition player to lay an awesome tackle, or bust through a line to set up a goal, but the lift they get from these is second to the psychological boost that kicking a goal does.
