Thing is, we aren't a fast team, and we seemed to be coached not to take risks.

Generally it is a good squad, however, as it always the case with Freo, there is a lot of daylight between are best and our worst.

Bolton was meant to be the "final piece of the puzzle" when we traded for him at great cost. I think that trade will bite us on the arse, and we should have used those picks to add to our depth.

Inevitably we are going to miss the finals again, and trade away our picks, and it will be a few years before anyone realizes weren't in our window because we didn't rebuild with the right players.
Not as bad as the Hogan trade.

I don't know. The Hogan trade was a good decision at the time. Neale wanted out, Hogan wanted home. Bar the navicular issues it seemed like a win, and not something we overpaid for. Guy was a KPF (which we were desperate for), and a former number one pick. Pick 6 and 23.

We arent a fast team.

Problem is we arent a big team, other than down back where we are too tall.

We also arent a skillful team.

What are we?

Freo are going to miss out on finals again due to losing a few games to inferior opponents.
Na, we're going to be a bit off it this year I think. Before today I had us 12-11 finishing 10-12. Today it's more looking 9-14 or 10-13 finishing 12-15...we're going to be mathematically gone with close to a month to go in the season I think.

This is a soulless group.
On paper they have all the tools. All Australians, media darlings, highly rated. Talent, as they say.
“Top 4 list” they keep telling us.

What makes a great team though? Other than talent?

Fight, fieriness, passion, going above and beyond for the team. Determination, ferocity in every single thing you do on that footy field. Consistency - not every week, that’s impossible - but say, 8 weeks out of ten. Not 4 weeks out of 10.

That’s the difference between the perennial contenders and the also rans.

When it comes to the crunch, we fail miserably in all these areas. These were all parts of constructing a competitive footy team that Ross Lyon from 2011-15 era excelled at. The ONLY period in our existence we have done that. He wasn’t perfect, but at least we were a force. People feared us.

I hate the excuses that are rolled out every week. One positive this week is that we brought in OMac and Aish so the usual suspects can’t pipe up with their nonsense about youngest side of the round.

We are a soft excuse based organisation. You cannot trust this club to win any game, no matter how one-sided it is on paper.

You cannot trust key players to kick clutch set shot goals when the big moments arrive. We have seen this for years now and it was sorely evident again today.

You guys living Perth don’t realise this but nobody take the FFC seriously. We are a curious oddity to most footy people outside WA, that pop up one or twice a season on the main radar on the AFL world.
Other fans don’t hate is either.
It’s even worse - they don’t care about us. We mean nothing and stand for nothing. A placeholder in the world of AFL footy.

To change this requires massive personalities and charismatic leaders. People who make noise, demand attention and back it up with their actions.
Apart from Pavlich, Lyon and Fyfe, we are basically a non entity in this regard since 1995.

Justin Longmuir is an unsuccessful, risk averse, introvert. Missionary and vanilla. Who on earth was dumb enough to think this man would lead a change in the culture of mediocrity that has plagued this club all its existence?

We will drift along, win maybe 10 or 12 games and he might get sacked/he might stay.
Overall nothing will change though long term until a ruthless overall of club culture is implemented.
All time melt. Some hard truths in there

I have us losing almost all the next 6
I can’t be confident about our attitude or coaching to say we’ll win any of them.
So, 3 and 9 at the break.

Lovely

Nope, can't agree with this.

The quality of the squad is fine and Bolton was a great addition. We also snared Reid in the same draft so we didn't cost ourselves anything beyond what we would have normally added in a good draft. We had 3 high draft picks and we ended up with two guns. That's a pretty good hit rate.

We just need a good coach.

What are we?

I would dispute we aren't a fast side. At least for pure leg speed. It's the way we play which is the problem.

Pearce, Draper, Amiss, Treacy, Jackson are all fast for their position. Chapman and O'Driscoll for their height. Johnson as well can have a decent burst. Walker, Wagner, Clark, Bolton, Sharp, Freddy, Switta are lightning. Brayshaw is an elite gut runner and speed is OK. Having a few guys being slowish is OK (e.g. Neale, Berry, Dunkley and the Ashcrofts aren't super quick).

At full strength, we should be a run and gun team moving the ball with speed and instinct.

To state what might be obvious, we aren't making top 4. Although Still think we are a chance to play finals
I feel like our trade decisions have all been about us being a top 4 team, now I can I only seeing a coach change giving us a chance to do that. With the most likely scenario us being in the stkilda/essendon zone for another 4 years.

I think we are:
fast enough
big enough
skillful enough

But we lack preparation, professionalism and, well, good old fashioned ticker.

KPP players being fast doesn't really translate to much benefit in terms of run and carry.

Drizz runs really well with ball. Freddy, Walker and Clark are genuine speedsters.

Switta and Sharp dont play particularly quick IMO. Sharp has had a few runs down the wing but they aren't bursting runs. Theres no get it from the back edge of the square take a couple of bounces on the burst and hit up a forward. James Walker was quick as but didnt play like it.

Our midfeld is very one paced however. Our backs despite having speed don't tend to run and gun too. Tiges tonight have some real zip about them.

Cox is supposed to be a good ball user for a key defender, but his ball use this season has been poor.

I hate the weak coaching from JL and the refusal to send him forward until it's too late.

We’re such a vanilla team.

The only thing the club is any good at is selling snake oil! They sell us hope year after year, so we still have a massive supporter base and are quite wealthy. I’m over the hope they sell us now. Enjoyed my Saturday today having chosen not to watch the game thinking this would happen.

This is so real as someone who lives over east. I’ve said it before, we are the most irrelevant club in the competition outside of Perth. Gold Coast gets more media attention than us. We are a quirk that barely exists and gets attention if we accidentally upset a big Victorian team. Or maybe cop an unholy thrashing.

It’s one thing to not really be good or bad and exist between 10th and 13th every year, it’s another to be listless and boring as well. Somehow we’ve managed to be both.

I hate the club. Every time I go to watch them they lose. 3 times last year Carlton, Port and Bombers.

Now Melbourne this year. My ratio is 10 plus losses for 1 win. Can't remember the last time we beat port or crows in Adelaide

My last win was gc in gather round.

Freddy, Switta, OMeara are all shit. 10 year rebuild and we still can't make the 8.

Trading away all those picks is still hurting
So given what you’ve just said, would you mind taking one for the team and not attend any more games?

It might help!

I’m annoyed at the deluge of ads on this site the last few days. Absolute overkill. Earlier every time I scrolled on my phone or changed pages a full screen ad pops up. Makes the site a horrible experience.
I reckon it's because they shut down the app so everyone has migrated to the website.

Serong is A grade, Young too but coming back from injury.
Brayshaw is a B plus.
All 3 are good enough, the fourth mid? The rotations?
This has more to do with gameplan than just 3 players copping the blame.
A defensive mid, tagger or enforcer is sorely missing.
There is a reason why JOM gets good numbers, the opposition want him with ball
in hand.
Serong has dropped his bundle far too often to be an a grader.

The only thing that would ever change the club is not watching, not going to games, not paying to support Freo. The fans are too nice so we'll be the same mediocre club forever

Serong has dropped his bundle far too often to be an a grader.
Serong is rated number 1 by champion data.
It’s pretty obvious you stop Caleb you are a good chance to defeat Freo.
All the good players get tagged and clubs have to work out how to work around this.
In the past we had Crowley and Suban
sacrificing their game to get Fyfe free.
Our midfield is devoid of size and power
and it’s why we get bullied.
Then there is the lack of menace or dirty tactics.
AFL is not a level playing field so why play nice?
No passion or emotion, no wonder the fans are sick of playing the waiting game.
