Re: very happy with stratergy

I don't think we drafted him though.

No, we recruited him from Qld, actually beat Carlton for his signature(maybe the only time in history) and he player in the 1986 U 19 Premiership team that also included Gavin Brown. Just beat the first years of the draft.

What did TRS say about bottom aged victorians again.

Nailed it.

Was just thinking if Hine just said we have to get Beams at 11 because we don't want to run the risk for him to fall to Pick 29 how that would change our Draft Strategy. It also depends if would take Blight at 29 or would we done that in the 3rd round. Do it both ways and Possible Players we could of drafted there.

Pick 29 - Blight Taken at 45.

The Players I see that Hine might of Picked are:
Jordan Roughead
Zac Clarke
Dan Hannberry
Tom Gillies
Ash Smith
Jordan Lisle

Pick 45 - Blight Taken at 29

The player Hine could picked are here:
Jordan Lisle
Micheal Walters
Jarrad Redden
Rhys Stanley
Rhys O'Keefe

Bart McCulloch
Shane Savage
Chis Hall

Re: very happy with stratergy

Speed over the first 20 metres is IMO one of the greatest weapons a footballer can have, particularly for a midfielder. If Sidebottom is as slow as some suggest, he will need to be brilliant in close to sustain a career at AFL level.

True. Simon Black was said to be too slow and look at how bad his career has been. From what I've read the kid was told he needed to improve his time over 20m and he went off and got it down to 3 seconds. Tells me that he takes feedback on board and is willing to work hard to improve so I'm confident he'll be fine in regards to his speed. He's got some footy smarts to be able to read the game, which should help.

Re: very happy with stratergy

I'm really happy with our draft (just got back from holidays and read through a weeks worth of draft threads). Seems like all four are exciting prospects, and fit our needs as well. Blight is my early favourite.

It could be pretty fun to go see some VFL games next year actually... Sidebottom, Beams, Blight, Rounds, McCarthy, Dawes, Wellingham, Reid etc. all in the same team.

Very True that steele does not have great Leg Speed but I reckon the pies will have him on a Training so he can imrpove that but as you say his Footy Smarts help hide that leg speed issue

Speed for an inside mid is overrated, its the speed of whats between his ears thats important.

If he can read the play and do it well then his footspeed doesnt matter

Good point but I am just saying when he has the ball in the Open because he can use the ball very well but don't want him the get caught because of Lack of Speed

Has anyone posted what time he ran in the 20 sprirts at draft camp??? Does anyone know his times???

The Malthouse Years (Players Drafted From 1999-):

B: Martin Clarke, John Anthony, Harry O'Brien
HB: Jarrad Blight, Nathan Brown, Heath Shaw
C: Scott Pendlebury, Dane Swan, Dale Thomas
HF: Alan Didak, Travis Cloke, Leon Davis
F: Paul Medhurst, Chris Dawes, Sean Rusling
Foll: Josh Fraser, Dayne Beams, Steele Sidebottom
Inter: Cameron Wood, John McCarthy, Nick Maxwell, Sharrod Wellingham

Emerg: Brad Dick, Shannon Cox, Ben Reid, Jaxon Barham, Anthonie Corrie, Luke Rounds, Ben Johnson, Brent MacAffer

Depth: Bryan, Goldsack, Stanley, Cook, L. Brown and Toovey.

-----------

Certainly not a bad list and I guess the significance of 1999+ is that even the "oldies" have some good footy left (eg. Josh and Leon).

Some better pace and finishing in that lot. Having half forward capable players available on every line might give us some game breaking advantage.

Adressing the spine was essential. Going forward, we really only had Travis in 2006, so while we were all crying out for gun mids, Hine did well to go for talls. J-Mac, Beams and Sidey will be ready inside mids relatively quickly.

We have a few guns, but don't have any glaring superstars. It's not 100% necessary, but hopefully we get a pleasant surprise or two. You can see some star potential in quite a few of them.

Some will fall, but some will rise and Malthouse won't have any excuse for not capitalising on this lot. It's his team completely now and the buck will stop with him if he can't.

He's a slug off the mark. Said so before we drafted him and nothing has changed. If he ran closer to a 3 habitually, he wouldn't be on our list!
True if he was quicker he would been top 10 or even a top 5 Pick

Looks like Hine was pretty much Targeting Mids and Pretty much passed up on all talls
