Great move by Port getting rid of the pokies , maybe Werribee can do the same , but they won't and they won't tell you how much they are fleecing people that can't afford it !
Werribee actually use that money to sponsor local sporting clubs based in their municipality, provide community grants to all organisations sporting or not and get around to many different organisations to support them.

I understand Port have sold The Rex to Moonee Valley Racing Club.

The “loss” of pokies doesn’t have to mean a big financial hit - if they got a good price for the business, they can invest that safely for a good annual dividend. Perhaps not as much as they were making from the venue, but they don’t have the hassle of running it any more either.

It’s why all clubs getting out of pokies and then claiming it’s altruistic are a joke. The pokies aren’t going anywhere, the same people will still play them the same amount - just the seller of the venue will effectively be getting an advance on many years pokie revenue via the sale.

Some of the AFL clubs in particular have been ridiculous in this PR space, trying to claim it’s for the public good. If you want it to be in the public good, keep the pokies and switch them off.

It’s a completely reasonable business decision but can’t stand clubs claiming it’s for social purposes. Tbf I haven’t heard Port doing that, it’s just a general observation.

Am guessing the stand alones will be required to fund their own interstate travel for starters.

I think part of the new planning / blueprint is that long term, there won’t be northern sides in the VFL. So there’ll be no travel. Perhaps Tassie, which will onlybe one or zero trips per year.

The NSW and Qld clubs and the AFL will have to come up with their own solution. The VFL was never a long-term play.

I would expect the current clubs

Box Hill
Casey
Carlton
Coburg
Collingwood
Essendon
Footscray
Frankston
Geelong
North
Port
Richmond
Sandy
St Kilda
Tasmania
Werribee
Williamstown

Not sure about the Bullants, imagine they’d be some chance given 18 teams would mean no bye, but there’d need to be a financial plan.

Bullants would need to survive this long first. As it is they're holding a general meeting this coming Monday to vote on the prospect of liquidating the club.

I'm sure the Rex was owned by Matherson , maybe it's the pokies licence

Coach and others are still owed money and Jennie The Terminator has now knocked it back after saying the VFL would

Fair day of VFL news, Ben Hobbs lands at the Borough as we anticipated, Werribee appoint the new coach and the Burgers give an opportunity to a former Bullant.
