Does it matter? If so, how much?

The selections I've been seeing all year really haven't seemed to have taken VFL form into account a great deal.

Does Malthouse go for reputation over form generally?

I'm so confused

I think it means F**k All with MM, He just has his Favorites he only plays and Players he does not and never plays them

MM's members-only e-mail said he would be selecting only players who were in form and consistent. Hence the selection of Ryan Lonie and Alan Toovey.

I don't know why MM selects anybody, to be quite frank.

Goldsack actually played a decent game in the twos last week, and had a ripping 3rd qtr where he helped kick start the side in the words of rowdy.

Toovey has been solid, not shitful as soem might say

Lonie ive been told all day has been on of the bests all year

Fraser played well last week and is our best ruckman

so yeah im thinking form.

I noticed that too. I can't fathom it. I honestly can't.

please dont pretend MM is teh only coach with "faviourites" every coach ****en well has them.

Look, I really dont think either Fraser or Lonie played that well last week against the shit opposition they came up against. I can understand Fraser being selected though.

Toovs tagged/ran with Lovett and did okay. Lovett's a quality player so I guess he had reasonable form but his selection totally baffles me.

Goldsack did play well and looked good in the second half and I guess is a back-up against Buddy.

The balance of the AFL side matters more. If MM wants defender he'll pick them. If he wants mids, i.e. if O'Bree is injured/dropped Stanley will get his go.

Secondly their ability to perform in the AFL matters.

Thirdly is their form in the VFL.

Yes it is reputation over form most of the time because unless they have a reputation for it, VFL form rarely translates to AFL form.

Fraser was only OK on Sunday. But realistically all the coaching panel wanted him to prove was that his knee was up to playing in the ruck. He did that.

Toovey was pretty good on Lovett in the VFL. Given our vulnerability to quick small forwards and our lack of a tagger in the midfield, I'm not surprised by his selection.

Lonie surprises me. IMO didn't play well on Sunday, despite his inclusion in the bests.

i dont think that MM has ( even tho it seems like he does) maybe he sets out different selection criteria for different players? maybe different players need to do more to warrant selction than others.. another possibility is he is trying to build up some trade options for later in the year..

It depends on your definition of form, because form as in kicks and handpasses, means little when it comes to breaking into the seniors.

Each player in the two's will have different instructions each week, eg.

We know Sam Iles can get 30+ touches per game, but I've no doubt all his coaching and the way he is judged is based on using it better, or kicking more goals, because that's what we need from him at AFL level. If he doesn't do those things, he doesn't get in the seniors, regardless of how many times he touches it.

Stanley would be similar, his poise and clean disposal, traits that he needs to improve on to play AFL, would be under the microscope. I didn't see his game on Sunday, but the fact that he picked up 41 touches and didn't get promoted, would suggest he didn't tick all the right boxes with the coaching staff. (He can't be far off though, I think he'll be a good player long term.)

We need Toovey to play a defensive blanketing style role, which he's been doing. So although he hasn't been in the best each week, he's been doing exactly what the coaching staff wants, to a level where he gets a game this week. In that sense, his VFL form is excellent.

Cox probably needs to show more accountability and intensity. Egan definitely does. I love these two and what they can potentially bring, but doubt both of them will be on the list at the end of the year. FWIW I think Egan may go and Cox will stay.

Chrissy Dawes probably played to instructions, but I'd say he needs to produce that consistently, which he looks on track to do given his form in recent weeks. Would ripping him out of the VFL environment and into the pressure cooker of the seniors do him any good when he's just starting to get some confidence going? I doubt it.

Barham, Dyas, LCL, Thoolen and McCarthy are just getting experience playing against men at the moment. Anything they show this year is encouraging and will be filed away and built on bext season.

At the other end of the scale, Fraser and Lonie and possibly Goldy would have had very different instructions to the kids listed above. We know what they can do at senior level, so I imagine their instructions were to get some run in the legs, hit a few contests, don't get injured and you'll be straight back in. Which is what we've seen.

Johnno will be told to start running again, rack up some touches and get his confidence back against some spuds. I suspect he's still very much in Mick's plans, if playing well.

So, yes, I think VFL form has alot to do with who gets to play for our beloved Pies. But it's not necessarily form in the traditional, first, second, third or fourth best on ground sense.

Don't be surprised if Stanley of J-Mac come in in the wet to get some tought bodies through middle of the ground.

You almost convince me that the selections are reasonable.
Very persuasively argued. In retrospect (of the selections and given the weather), it would not have been a great night for Dawes to debut.

Would AFL experience of night football also be a factor, or are players more adaptable in this day and age? I'm just thinking of the days when the kangaroos were regarded as night football specialists, as though it required learning another set of skills to play well at night.
