I just got home from Frankston, a great day out, if a bit chilly!! Here is my report!!
GEELONG vs FRANSTON
Frankston Oval
Weather: Sunny parts, with a strong breeze off the bay
Geelong: 4.4 7.5 14.9 16.11.107
Frankston: 2.4 4.8 6.9 8.13.61
Goals: Geelong: Lonergan 5.0, McCarthey 3.3, S.Byrnes 3.0, Jordan 2.1, Spriggs 1.0, J.Byrne 1.1, Cook 1.1
Best: Geelong: (in no particular order) Spriggs, Tenace, Lonergan, McCarthy, Koulouriotis, Buckland, Cook.
Didnt bother to get Frankstons goals or best!!
It started out as a sunny day at Frankston Oval, and I was always confident of a Geelong win. There was a strong breeze coming in off the ocean, resulting in, I would say, a 3-4 goal breeze to the other end (Geelong kicked with the breeze in the 1st and 3rd Qtr's)
The players seemed really happy that they were able to beat Frankston, who although are struggling on the ladder would have been best suited to the conditions. Also, we have a tendancy this year to lose games we should win, so this was an important win for the boys to keep them cemented in the Top 8.
Of the players pushing for a senior recall, I thought Tenace and Koula were the standouts. Tenace got plenty of the ball, although his disposal at times did let him down, and his 2nd, 3rd and 4th efforts were sensational. I remember once trying to get out of defence he tried to snap the ball around his body, only to have it smothered, he then chased up, tackled the player, who proceeded to handpass to a team-mate, who Tenace chased after as well, tackled him and forced the ball over for a throw in. Terrific stuff from a toung kid. Koula continued his impressive form this season with another great performance. He provided excellent run through the middle and kicked long into the forward line, giving our tall forwards a chance to mark. I would be very surprised if he didnt get a senior game this year.
Luke Buckland was outstanding in defence. Time after time he stopped Frankstons run forward, and then proceeded to set-up Geelong's run out if defence. For a slight kid, he provides one hell of a contest. In the 3rd qtr, Frankston had 3-4 successive Inside 50's and Bucky stopped each one, along with Matty Spencer, they work well as a combo. Brendan McCartney was on the boundary line giving instructions to both players, and it was quite funny to see both Luke and Matty go over to him at various stages in the 3rd qtr to receive the advice!!
Tom Lonergan was excellent up forward today. He lead strongly, and marked well, not to mention kicked very accurately. Five straight is a great return especially with the windy conditions down there today. 2 of his goals came in the last, thanks to 50m penalties awarded by the umpires, one for back chatting and another for not coming back on the mark. Along with Tom, Matty McCarthy played a blinder. He took several string pack grabs in the 3rd qtr, and could have ended with a bag, but his last 3 shots resulted in 3 behinds, onr touched right on the line!! His kicking didnt appear to have improved greatly, one goal I remember just made the distance from what looked like about 30m out!! But they all count in the end!
David Spriggs played the usual David Spriggs game. Got plenty of the ball, but also turned it over an many occasions. He has improved in the last few weeks, and more if his kicks are finding Geelong players, but he still needs to improve. I remember one kick into the 50m travelled about 5m, when all he had to do was kick it 15m. James Rahilly was very similar, he got plenty of it, but still on a number of occasions turned the ball over.
Apart from Geelong's 7 goal 3rd Quarter it was a pretty scrappy affair. Geelong over-used the ball too much going forward, and instead of just kicking long, went for the short handpass which more often than not didnt work, which resulted in turnovers, free kicks and ruck contests. I think I saw the most number of 50m Penalties paid today than in any other game, I recall about 9 being paid in the match, split evenly both teams ways (if you can split 9 evenly
) One which caught my eye was against H, who thought he had marked the ball, only to be paid 'In The Back' against him, and when the umpire asked him to return the ball to the player simply threw it on the ground and walked away...STUPID!! Especially when it was already about 30m out from goal, made it a certain goal for Frankston. Needless to say H was dragged straight away!!
Also, Aaron Greaves was reported for headbutting in the last qtr, a stupid act which will probably see him get suspended considering the umpire was about 70cm from him!! Also, a Frankston player was reported for striking I believe, late in the 3rd qtr. This wasnt the only heat in the match, several small scuffles broke out early in the 2nd qtr, and it looked like there might be one big brawl ensue, but fortunately that didnt happen!!
Also mentions to "2 Weeks" Foster, Blake and Shannon Byrnes who also played great games. It really was a team effort with not many players having a bad day.
All in all a good win for the club, and good to see a small but vocal contingent of Geelong supporters make the trip to cheer on the boys!! You know it is always appreciated by the players.
Well Done Catters!!
