Early call, but I've got a great feeling about Gillies.

When you think about it, we've done extremely well picking up key defenders the last few years. Egan was in the VFL team of the year at full back the year we drafted him, and Gillies was full back in the TAC Cup team of the year last year too. Add Taylor to that who's blossoming into a gun centre half back, and our backline will be strong for a while yet. :thumbsu:

Popped in to see the game on our way down to Lorne and I was very impressed with what I saw.

Mumford - Was clearly the dominant player on the ground. Was too big and strong in the ruck and took some fine marks around the ground.
Gillies - Started slowly. Dropped a couple of marks and got caught early on. He improved as the game went on. Has a great attack on the footy and provides plenty of run. Had a field day in the last quarter floating across half back when Willy kept bombing the ball into the forward 50 void of any team mates.
Hunt.T - Was very quiet and is smaller than what I thought. Done some good things though to suggest he could be an asset down the track.
Brown - Seemed a little out of sorts when played deep early in the 1st but when moved out to CHF half way through the qtr he kicked 2 quick goals and hit the post with a left foot snap. They must be really looking after him as he didn't have much game time in the 2nd half.
Ranga - Very dissapointed to see him carried off as he was absolutely killing them at the clearances. Was just about playing himself into the NAB GF squad.
Allwright - Very tough in close and works really hard. Needs to work on his kicking and decision making as he turned the ball over with poor execution and choices. Love his attack on the footy though.

How great would it of been if we had a Scarlett or Egan or Taylor 20 years ago. For about 10 years we couldnt buy a defender, then we develop one of the best defenses but have no forwards. Now it seams like its balancing itself out abit.

You can go back even further when examining our strike rate when recruiting key defenders. When Bomber arrived at the club he stated that any great side is built from the defence up and thus he set about developing young guys who he believed had what it took to backstop our side over the course of many years. Guys like Scarlett, Harley, Milburn, then Egan and Mackie, now Gillies and Taylor, were never world beaters as juniors. They were just good- honest tryers determined to put in the hard yards to make it, and under the guidance of our defense savvy system, lead by Bomber and the brilliant but understated Brendan McCartney, have turned into top notch performers. And, if you look at it, what other key defenders have we brought in to develop outside of those guys? Maybe 1-2, Matthew Spencer springs to mind, so our strike rate is almost 100%. Even that Scott Thompson was turning into a gun young backmen in our reserves. Geelong is certainly the place to be as a young defender, and it's why I'm so excited about Gillies because on raw talent alone, he is the best we've brought in and that's including Scarlett.

Geelong - Goals: Westwood 3, Brown, Tom, Donohue, Bucovaz 2, Hughes, Smith, Hornsey
