Ted Baileu, leader of the Coalition in Vic is reported to be trying to do a preference deal with the Greens in an attempt to win the upcoming election. Throws up a lot of issues:

1. Will the Nationals wear it?
2. Will right wing liberal voters support it or go informal/national?
3. What are the motivations? Reports that Baileu might lose his seat without a deal as Greens are expected to poll well.
4. Would the Greens do any deal with the Libs (Ted is as left as they come for a lib).

Makes me feel ill, informal is the way I will be going.

Perhaps he is trying to shore up the "doctor wives" vote.

Given the track record of the ALP in Victoria, there should be no way they can be returned.

I note he went in hard on the bushfire issue recently. yet the elecorate covering marysville etc federally swung to the ALP
All Bailue does is complain and offer no alternatives.

He's talking to the Greens cause the Libs dont think they have a chance in hell of winning.

They are in this position through their own ineptness and not because Labour is overly competent.

I'm not a fan of Brumby or the Labor Party here but the Fibs and the VicRats are completely and utterly incompetent in Opposition and would be a disastrous government.

News Ltd is the real opposition in Victoria.

Which is a shame because definitely Brumby and probably Bracks before him did not deserve to wield power in government. All Brumby is good for is a good photo op usually with a hardhat on.

Hopefully we see a swing to the Greens here next election like we just saw in the Federal election and someone can hold these people to account.

You see this is what the Labor Party wants - either way they hold onto power...and if things get really desperate (unlikely) they can just put a new front man (or preferably) a woman before we get to the next election.

It is called rule by revolving door as per what the back office boys want...it provides a veneer of smooth power transfer, while if Bracks was still in power they probably wouldn't have won...but he got "exhausted" and handed power over to Brumby. How convenient.

The only way we can defeat their hubris is to vote for renewal/a change- ie a new government, but I think most people are too ignorant to see this. Labor will win, yet again and again, and again. The PR stuff - the photo opportunities as per agove whilst spending 300 million on a new rugby stadium - all comes across well to the ignorant.

And here I thought that the Victorian government was the best state Labor government in the country.

Must show just how pathetic the other state governments are.
They're great, except for on crime, public transport, environment (especially emergency services), youth, drugs, arts, health, education and planning.

The problem is that beyond "police at every station at night!" the Libs don't have too many policies. NSW Labor could be in charge and the Libs would struggle to win here they are so incompetent (ok maybe that's a bit far, but you get my point).

The lack talent but most of all they lack ticker. Jeff Kennett would tear the ALP to bits and destroy them, Ted is too busy trying to be a nice guy and trying to suck up to the Greens to get in there and have a go.

At least Brumby follows the Pies.

Might be a case where the Greens provide open tickets for preferences. They've done it many times when there is a decent Liberal candidate.

Small "l" liberals will have more in common with a lot of greens voters than the right wing of the labor party.

Precedents for it with Liberals for Forests in WA for example.

Every time my train sits idly on the train tracks near Kings Way, waiting for space to free up at Flinders St. station, I think of how inept this state government is. And then I think about how inept the electorate is, given that they will almost certainly vote that clown Brumby back in.

Sad, sad, sad, state of affairs.

:(

Terry Mulder is the only person I can think of with any talent whatsoever for them, and that's probably more for the fact he is in a portfolio (public transport) where you would have to totally inept to not land a few punches.

Scarily they are.

Alan Carpenters Labor government was also surprisingly mild in it's terribleness.

Despite the fact it was hamstrung by ineptitude and infighting, it somehow managed to get a few worthwhile things done without totally ruining the state.

Far better than the majority of Australia's other state governments.

Because of course, those kinds of back-office factional heavies don't exist in the Liberal Party.

Your blind spot is showing again.

Spare us the sloganeering.

If the Liberals are to have a serious chance of winning in Victoria, they have to actually come up with competent and capable leadership, shadow ministers with real talent, and show that they're a credible alternative government.

And they sure as hell haven't come within cooee of doing that.

NSW Labor could be in charge and the Libs would struggle to win here they are so incompetent

Hell, I wouldn't even rule out the Libs stuffing it up for themselves in NSW.

They're at least as much of a rabble there as they are in Victoria, and the lunar right have a far stronger presence - as well as exercising more dominant influence - within the Liberal Party there...

i hope the LDP has a few candidates run for an upper house seat.

Otherwise i'll be going the informal again.

The Geelong region needs an enema to get rid of a few of the Labor shit stains that have been stinking the place up for far too long.

I agree with you 100%. It's just that I don't think that new government should be LNP. A Labor/Green coalition government would be much better.

Seems like every Labor state government is equally as shit as the others, the coalition is just alot worse.

Wouldn't be suprised if Bligh gets voted back in up here, even though shes an absolute moron.

The reason the state Labor government keeps getting in is that they lack the balls to make any big decisions they they fiddle around the sides of the issues and try to beat down any fires that show up as they do.

The libs on the other hand have offered nothing as a way of an alternative.

The old saying governments are voted out and not in is very true in Victoria. If Kennett hadn't tried to go that step to far we would probably still have a liberal government today as the Labor opposition wasn't that good when Bracks came into power (but it packed a lot more talent than the libs currently does)

As I've said a number of times before, the Opposition does look woeful, but:

* The Labor Opposition looked just as bad when it surprisingly defeated Kennett

* They cannot be seriously worse than the current government and we need a change in government so that a shake-up can take place, otherwise we are are stuck in the disappointing status quo.

The thing with Baillieu, is that he comes across as whinging sook all the time. He gets such little traction.

The Greens could take at least 4 lower house seats in November, including Pike's seat of Melbourne and Wynne's seat of Richmond. I can see why Baillieu is worried.
