return the movie when it needs to be. simple task
dont bitch about the late fees if your bringing them upon yourself.

Who uses video libraries anymore?
So you're complaining that if you break the contract and return it late they charge you a penalty because they then can't rent that video out to make revenue to run their business?
Shame on them for making you return the video late

I only realised on the weekend that you can rent movies on iTunes! Best thing ever, no late fees and its right there waiting for ya.

OP if you returned it on time there would be no issue!

How many years does a store like Video Ezy have left ? The years would be numbered, one would of thought.

I've seen two Video Ezy's and one Blockbuster close this year

Can I just say, regarding late fees from video libraries, try not to rack them up and if you do pay them straight away. In my line of work, countless people have had entries on their credit/Veda files from places like these because they have thought the charges insignificant enough to pay. Don't be fooled, these guys will send it to a recovery agency regardless of the amount. It's heartbreaking for us to see mortgages and loans applications denied by credit because there are black marks all over some people's files that they never even knew were there beforehand.

I've racked up huge late fees in pretty much every video store within a 15km radius of my house

If theres a video store blackbook, bet you I'm in it.

I've recieved demands from video stores for fines over $100 but never paid, I have the same problem with parking tickets. I just refuse to pay because I dont believe the price reflects the crime. So I still havent paid them and they went away

I owe the nearest video ezy to me about $30 and another $70 on my girlfriends account because of one of the worst movies of all time that I hired when it was an overnighter but didt return for at least 2 months

Credit history catches up with you in the end...

How long has this been happening? Ie. video libraries having the power to give bad credit ratings?

The reason I ask is I used to be pretty bad with video libraries and I was put into a black book, ie. a central book that all video libraries can access, but this was over 12 years ago. I don't seem to have a bad credit rating, can get loans, cc, phone. But a few weeks ago, I went to sign up at my local library and I was told that I had a bad credit rating. I don't have a bad credit rating, I think Im coming up on an old default video library list.

So ferris, when did the banks agree to allow video libraries interfer with credit ratings?

It's not the banks or APRA that regulate this it's Veda (the old CRAA, Credit Reference Association of Australia) that record the defaults on your credit file. The worst companies I've seen for this are Optus, Vodafone, Blockbuster, Crazy Johns and 3. They have very itchy trigger fingers when getting debt recovery firms involved and if no luck will happily register a default under your name with Veda. Good news is if you've paid the default and it's over 5 years then you won't have an issue getting credit from a bank.

I'm amazed that those of you who claim to "hate" piracy are still willingly doing it, you do know you're stealing right? Would you walk into a shop and take something off the shelf and walk out?

People still go there?

I love when people enter an agreement and then break that agreement and cry when they have to pay the consequences for breaking the agreement. It's kind of like speeding in your car. It's heaps of fun until you get the $300 fine in the mail and then all of a sudden the government is just out to rip money off you for no reason.

Pretty sure credit agencies cannot just put a black mark on your record as soon as it is sent to them. I had a parking fine from a council get sent to a debt collection agency because I refused to pay it because the council had overlooked the fact I had asked it to go to court as the idiots added penalty fees before the due date to pay had elapsed. After contacting the debt collection agency and discussing this with them and the council, they backed down as they did not want it to go to court as the council would be up for court fees as told to them by their solicitor as they had made the error. Fact was that the collection agency must give you a period of demand to pay the money (in writing) or to arrange payment and a period to pay without penalty before it affects your credit history. I am also sure under contract they have to prove you are the party who contracted in order to hit you with the charges. In this case they told me the court would have to provide them with a bad debt order to allow them to collect the money before they could alter the record as they must prove I am at fault before they have the power to enter the record.

A big problem with video stores and fines is that if they seek to charge you with fees above and beyond the scheduled rate for the hire, they need to prove they educated you about them adequately much like insurance companies do. This includes providing in writing updated information to show the charges have changed.

I must say it is a bit rich to hear the 'you're stealing and ruining the industry' argument in regards to piracy when single actors are getting 10million for a movie. I'll have no problem pirating Twilight for example.

but on the same note, there are a lot of people involved in movies that recieve very small payment for their work or rely on royalties from the movie which piracy effects a lot.

I remember watching a documentary about a south african lion range that basically ran on fumes and the lions were used for a pretty decent movie. Majority of the profit that they were to earn from the movie came in form of royalties and the range was relying on this money to survive. The movie got pirated and as a result they essentially made f all and the show ended before the results came in, but it seemed because of this the range wouldve been closed

What a load of manipulative hog wash. They make no money from loyalties because these congolmorates are greedy beyond belief and don't pay their staff fairly. They'd rather spend $40 million on getting the latest "it" girl and guy in their film to attract the masses then they pocket the rest. This happens despite video piracy.

You can gurantee that doco was produced by a mega movie house.

i don't know. i was moving out of a place and rang optus to cancel the service and send any remaining bills (if there were any) to my new address. 12 months later i find out i have a bad credit rating because of outstanding bills from optus. apparently they hadn't updated my address details and had been sending the bills and debt recovery notices to the old address.

If you can prove you provided the new address or have OPTUS admit they stuffed up then you can have this overturned. The feds are regulating two industries again after Keating's deregulation failed being the financial industry and the telecommunication industry. The credit rating business is becoming a joke as people are getting black strikes for things that they either aren't responsible for or need to be confirmed and proven to be responsible for. The current industry problems are the insurance and the private car parks. Both are notorious for bad mouthing people when they cannot prove they committed a breach simply because they have no idea of civil law or choose to have no idea of civil law just because they cannot prove who the at fault entity was and choose to pursue the owner because they can.

tl;dr
So I'm happy for you to put your theory to the test, if you doubt the things I see that happen on a daily basis.
Again, whatever excuse you want to give, if you **** with debt collection agencies and Veda, it will come back to haint you when you don't want it.
But you've had a parking ticket so carry on....
