Visitor's Book - Give the Board a Bump

Remove this Banner Ad

Over the last few days I have been visiting the Fitzroy board fairly regularly and it seems to me in a state of suspended animation, with no activity in the last 4 days. This is why I think we need a thread like this one.

I'm sure there are plenty of people, Fitzroy or otherwise, who have visited our board but not posted, so perhaps you might like to leave a message, random observation or particular Fitzroy memory on this thread.

Regular posters might also use the thread to let us all know, in inane twitter style what they are up to or what they are thinking.

I know this is not a Fitzroy thing however we at Fitzroy know a bit about this.

Over on the North board I have been posting about the hopefully now aborted plan of the club to play 7 games a year in Hobart. My view is that it is a pre-cursor to relocation. While relocation is better than merger interstate, ultimately if this happens North supporters should get used to this:

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=776092

What a terrible arrangement this is for old Royboys who suuport Brisbane. To compare, my standard membership with North this year will cost $175 including a reserved seat on level 1 for all home games at Etihad.

Just 6 games here in Melbourne this year for Lions fans. Truly terrible.

Not up to much apart from celebrating my 42nd birthday. Thanks to my fiancee, I'm doing it in style with some merchandise from the Fitzroy shop:

Fitzroy keyring
Fitzroy cap (two)
Fitzroy Football Club Bumper Sticker
Fitzroy Polo Shirt (although will have to swap it for a smaller size)
Fitzroy calendar 2010/07/09
Kevin Murray Heart of a Lion by Chris Donald
Haydn Bunton by Chris Donald
Fitzroy, for the love of the Jumper by Chris Donald

Thanks for dropping by Horace. I agree, Victorian Membership of the Brisbane Lions is not the best value, which is why I have let my membership lapse. The whole issue has been debated at length on the Brisbane board on the 2011 Membership thread and the 2011 Draw thread, so I won't reopen that Pandora's box here.

As far as membership goes, I don't think you can go past:

As for you AndrewD, all I can say is, you're a lucky man!

I am indeed - not the least because she's also buying me my 2011 Fitzroy membership and a guernsey for Christmas.

Now, all we need to do is get ourselves down to see a game or two. Any idea when the draw is released for Premier C section?

Brisbane Lions - Fitzroy Father/ Son Draft Picks

I was at a book launch on Friday evening and saw Richard Osborne and his family. I spent a lot of time watching Osborne play junior footy at Bulleen Templestowe and obviously followed his career even more closely when he was at Fitzroy and while his form could be a bit mercurial at times, he was a gun footballer. Anyway, he had his son with him, who appears to be about 13 or so and who bears a striking resemblance to his dad when he was a youngster. This got me thinking.

There was an article in The Age recently which outlined the effort the Footscray making to nurture the sons of former greats and I wonder if Brisbane are doing anything similar with the sons of former Fitzroy greats? Footscray drafted two players under the Father / Son rule this year and it seems they are likely to draft plenty more.

When I think back to some of the great Fitzroy sides of the 1980's and some of the really solid players running around at Fitzroy in the early '90's, there must be Fitzroy players who have sons, who, with some encouragement and mentoring, might be draft prospects or even better, possible champions at the Brisbane Lions. Are they being proactive in this regard?

Getting back to Richard Osborne's son, he may not be interested in football, but if he is, Brisbane should be interested in him. It would certainly be a way of developing the connection between Fitzroy and Brisbane and giving a higher profile to the traditions of Fitzroy Football Club.

Here is a list of past players who's sons would qualify, if they had boys and if their sons were interested. There may be others.

Even if they didn't want to play AFL, are there any who could continue the family tradition at Fitzroy? The list would be longer if we are talking about playing at Fitzroy, because ther would be no "games played" requirement.

Paul Roos
Mick Conlan
Richard Osborne
Leon Harris
Gary Pert
Scott Clayton
Jim Wynd
John Blakey
Brett Stephens
Matt Armstrong
Ross Lyon
Jason Baldwin
Alastair Lynch
Tim Pekin
Michael Gale
Stephen Paxman

P.S. There's a few gun footballers on this list!

No, it's Aussie Rules. Had few different names over the years which makes things confusing. Akermanis will be playing down there next year, for Glenorchy and Melbourne's second round draftee has come from Tassie State League's Hobart Tigers.

Yep. In trying to not duplicate league names, they've exhausted any practical monikers. TANFL, TFL... heck, the current TSL is at least better than the "SWL" - State Wide League!

Will be interesting for me, as a Glenorchy supporter, supporting a guy like Aker. Still, if it helps us improve...

Just on the topic of father-son draftees, I noticed that Cameron Gutherie, who has been drafted by Geelong and will wear the #29 guernsey, is the son of former Fitzroy player Andrew Merryweather. While he only played one game for Fitzroy, back in 1982 (and 5 for Essendon in 88), he was a very good player for us at Reserves level and might have played a few more times if he he'd been able to pack on even a little bit of muscle (he was very light in weight). I remember sitting near his sister at quite a few Reserves games and she'd always say hello (when we played at Waverley there were so few people there for the first game you couldn't help but notice everyone). That made us hope he'd get a run with the Firsts and we were there for his one and only game, against Melbourne at VFL Park. Unfortunately, we copped a hiding (Jackson kicked 6 and Healy kicked 4 for the Dees) that day and he didn't get another chance for Fitzroy.

Good for you. The only time I watched it was live on an old black & white tv, with terrible reception, but I still loved it. I'd also love to watch that game again. :thumbsu:

Worth watching just to see Graham Campbell wearing half a sheep!

When people talk football fashions, Ron Barrassi's outfit at the 1977 Grand Final (replay) usually gets a mention as one of the all time greats, but I think Campbell's contribution to male fashion on this night has been radically underestimated.

My mum used to have a coat that was just like the one Graham was wearing.

I thought some on here might be interested in this.

I was watching some documentary the other day about Charles Darwin, when I decided to look up if Robert Fitzroy ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_FitzRoy ) was who the suburb of Fitzroy was named after.

It turns out it was named after some Governor of NSW ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Augustus_FitzRoy ).

Anyway, in the process I came across an amusing entry in Wikipedia for the term Fitzroy ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitzroy ):
Fitzroy or FitzRoy is an Anglo-Norman name originally meaning "son of the king" - it usually refers to a bastard son of the king, or a descendant thereof

(And to finish off, here is the Wikipedia entry for Fitzroy Football Club http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitzroy_Football_Club )
