I must say that reading many of the posts here reminds me of the level of partisanship that I used to hear at the football when Gary Wilson was running around for Fitzroy and an opponent had whacked him. Though the Merrett incident is clearly different, the parochial analysis of what has happened are all pretty much variations of the following:

(Gary Wilson gets king hit off the ball or when making the play. He collapses to the ground and is concussed / semi conscious.)

First Opposition Supporter: "Aww get up Wilson you big sook, he hardly touched ya!"
Second Opposition Supporter: "Yeah get up Wilson you #%$@ing girl you got the bloody free!"

(Field Umpire, Boundry Umpire, Goal Umpire or all three approach the opposition player who struck Wilson and report him)

First Opposition Supporter: "You would have to be bloody joking umpire! He didn't do anything!
Second Opposition Supporter: "Don't worry about it (insert opposition player's name)!
First Opposition Supporter: "You're a bloody umpires pet Wilson!"
Second Opposition Supporter: "Yeah boys be careful, you can't touch him!"
First Opposition Supporter: "You're a #%$@ing protected species Wison!"

(Gary Wilson is taken off on a stretcher and takes no further part in the game.)

Postscript: Gary Wilson was heavily concussed, suffered from double vision for a time and missed the next week. The bloke who whacked him was given 3 weeks on Tuesday night when he fronted up to the Tribunal, despite the fact that Wilson said that he only recieved a glancing blow that he thought was unintentional.

It's frightening to think how good Garry Wilson would have been today under current rules ... I told him once he was the best AFL player I had ever seen. He gave me a strange look. Then I added pound for pound.. He nodded his head in agreement.

Yes and it is great to watch the progression ,when they finally can play REAL footy.

Also was great for blokes like me who lacked natural talent and athleticism...at least you can get under packs, shepherd, bump and make blokes regret getting the near ball you when it becomes full contact :thumbsu:

then you get to about 17-18 and the fitness requirements become too heavy for a lazy soon-to-be uni student so you change sports. C'est la vie :P.

It's a bloody hard game to play, so it should be played hard imo. But I do feel for Hurley (concussions are always an awful feeling) and the MRP would have been waiting for Merrett to do something after how he's been acting as of late (aggression is good, being a silly isn't, he was walking a very fine line). Clarke I feel is a little stiff though. Voss just has to tell Clarke sometimes you'll be fine with those and sometimes you won't and let him keep playing like that.

I hope neither of them bother to contest honestly, would rather just cop it and move on after a fantastic win. Just a damn shame we won't have Merrett against Cloke.

Patfull pantsies Cloke most of the time so I'm not too fussed about that.

Hopefully the suspension is the slap across the back of the head Sauce has been asking for all season. Agro is great when coupled with form (again, I point to our Club Champion on Saturday. Go Angry Joel!) but agro alone causes silly mistakes and as Sauce has discovered, suspension.

What do we have to loose if Merritt challenges and looses, does it stay at 3 weeks??
Agree with Clarke not worth the risk, but with Merritt, if nothing to loose should we have a go for it, I can't remember who but the same thing came up a couple of weeks ago for another player, if I remember correctly they challenged a 3 game and came out with only 2.

Pretty sure with his previous carry over points that he was over 400 which is 4 games or 3 with an early guilty plea. If he contested I'm pretty sure he would be risking an extra game. Think he's going to have to cop it on the chin. 2 games was probably what I expected him to get given what happened. It wasn't a sling tackle as such and he didn't really ride him into the ground but more and more the mrp are taking into the injury caused when assessing things so he was always going to cop a few. The fact he has carry over points makes it seem worse but really 3 weeks down to 2 isn't that bad really.

I was quietly hoping they'd challenge Merrett's.

I did't think Merrets was as bad as some bad it out, more than anything, I think his 93 carry over points made it seem worse that it really was in the final verdict. If anything (hope this isn't out of line on your board) I thought Clarkes was a little worse than Merret's. But, seems a lot of weight is on the medical reports, Kav had little damage, Hurley was obviously KO'ed

Take a week off if a KO'd player is named to play the next week!

Well we know Essendon always have their players welfare at heart.
I thought they had to have a week off after concussion.

Perhaps this little forced spell for Merrett will give him time to reflect on his actions and performance in the season up until now. He certainly has been showing some odd temper issues, brain fades and hasn't been anywhere near his best.

People were talking about dropping him to the 2nds for a week to achieve this. Perhaps the MRP will achieve this, and we will get back Merrett in his usual fine form :)

Boxing has a 60 day rule after a knock out. Not even allowed to train. I know that you have mentioned duty of care to me before but when a concussed player is selected a week later then I question duty of care
