Wake up call No 2 - Lets hope its heeded this time

I was amazed at the number of kicks that our players gave to the opposition. They didn't seem to look where they were kicking. Even if they didn't have a player to kick to the dogs just kicked to an open area and their guys seemed to realise it faster than ours.
But I agree the eagles seemed flat and listless.
I've seen Collica play in the WAFL and he really doesn't inspire me to include him in the team. Same goes for some of the others. I really would have like to see McDougall get a chance and I can't understand why Wooden was sent back to the WAFL either.

Banfield- Has been useless for several weeks. Was soundly beaten against Richmond, got given a bath by Cupido last week, and was humiliated by Brown. What the hell is the point of a back pocket defender who can't defend. His longstanding rep at the club might help him out, but realistically, atm he's losing games for us. Unless they play him as a midfield tagger again, he's a waste of space.

Hunter- Needs to find another element to his game other than roughing up forwards behind play. Might get a reprieve up forward, but realistically, there are better big men waiting for a go.

Munro- Clearly not in our best 22. Has had infinite opportunities over the last six weeks, and has completely failed to impress.

Humm- Like Munro, the coach has shown a lot of faith in him, and he really hasn't repaid it. Has courage, but isn't a ball winner, and can't limit opposition players, so he lacks any reason to be there. He's had half a season of AFL experience under his belt this year, now back to the WAFL for a while so he can put what he's learnt into practice.

Jones- A bit of a favorite player, but had an absolute shocker yesterday. His kicking is a real worry, and he's living on borrowed time. If he gets another chance next week, he really has to take it.

Braun- my biggest problem with Braun, is where he fits into this side. There are two midfield places on the bench. One should go to a dedicated tagger, one should go to an 'instant offence' type of player. Which one of those is Braun?

McIntosh- The only reason for picking him ahead of our younger defenders is because he's so much of a better option. Except right now, he isn't.

i get the feeling that banfield is keeping reads spot warm while he is out of the side but i agree with humm, hunter and munro taking up space. i would expect that those 3 will be given a rest.

i actually thought that braun and jones would have got an OK rating yesterday although jones was down on recent weeks. braun showed a bit of hardness early in the game but did drop away.

i believe that milli will be kept in the side to play on lynch. both of them are strong and can't run for ****. a perfect match up.

I am suprised Munro and Humm have played so much AFL football this year. I am not convinced Humm is up to AFL standard although nobody can question his courage backing back into those packs.

Wouldn't panic a ****load just yet but we do need to get rid of a few - Wooden has to come back in, McDougall has to get a run, Morrison and Read will come back pretty soon.

Those who will struggle to make it next week:

Glass gotta go - McDougall and Gaspar to rotate through the backline/ruck and forwardline.
Humm - did great work against Collingwood, but 2 ordinary games in a row
Hunter - has put in some pretty ordinary performances, and last weekend was very poor.


Banfield has put in some poor games lately. As has Jones and Munro, whilst since his great performance against the Dees, Milli has done **** all.

What the deal with Jones? Why is everyone suddenly calling for his head? He has been brilliant for us all season long and then when he has an average game, it wasnt really poor, just kind of average, you want to drop him? Jones must stay in the side, he has been very good all season long.

As for the Glass/Carroll argument. How about this....dont play either of them! Bring in Lynch, Hansen, McDougall (to play forward to release Gaspar back) Staker....hell anyone but those two. Also really need Collica back in defence!

Anyways I dont think it's really a wake up call. The Dogs are a good side despite where they sit on the ladder and losing to Essendon in Melbourne isnt exactly a disgraceful loss. Win or lose against Brisbane next week, we should be in the top 4 at the break. Ill take that.

I think Glass has it over Mcintosh in a head to head match-up right now. Glass disposal isn't the best but he gets the ball alot more than Mcintosh, runs longer, is more versatile and i can't remeber him being cut-up by a forward.

What would have happened if he was playing on Rawlings against Hawthorn, Loyd against Essendon, and Harrison last week.

I think we might of won all three.

He is definately not the problem, mostly under-rated i say.
It's our small defenders, who are supposed to win the ball at ground level, that are causing trouble.

As for Jones... he's a hard worker but should be the defensive type. Tagging and Half-back. Just not dangerous enough as a forward.

But he has the best hands of any midfielder in our team. A defender punches first, marks second. Therefore we would just lose one of Jones' best attributes. IMO he must play in the midfield and drift forward.

Jones is a dodgy shot at goal, thats why he shouldnt play up forward

Jones is always the type of player who will cop it in a loss - he isn't flashy, but rather consistent, so when he produces slightly below he's best everyone will jump on him.

For instance someone like Joel Bowden, he's best is exhillirating but his worst is very ordinary - when he puts in a shocker, Tiger fans would be thinking "well it was bound to happen"

dont know If i really got my point through, but I think I got the general gist of what i'm trying to say.

I agree with Jod - we shouldn't play either Glass or Carroll. They're just not upto it. We have to try with Gaspar, McDougall, Lynch and even Hansen or Seaby down there even though there not defenders. Just try something.

I have no idea if this is true, but looking at the size and strenght of Dustin Fletcher, I'd reckon in his younger days he was always earmarked as a tall forward, but went on to be an AA fullback.

I think giving Q.lynch a go at lynch would be a very good idea lynch is strong enough and they are both slow, lyych likes to mark one on one so we need a storng player to match up on him i think glass and macintosh will be slaughtered by him!!!

I actually think despite Milli's poor form of late, he's the ideal guy to play on Lynch- at the moment, McIntosh is getting burnt by players on the lead, but he's always been great at the body on body stuff.

On Jones, he's hugely underrated, and I like him as a player. Atm though, his biggest problem is that he's a forward with great mobility, hands, and ability to find the ball, who is currently unable to kick straight. This has been an ongoing problem for a few weeks now (particularly, see v Essendon and Collingwood), and it needs to be addressed. I don't know if its a technique issue or if he has the yips at the moment, but there's not much demand for a forward who can take strong marks and read the play, but is completely incapable of putting it through the big sticks. Right now, he's a thinking man's clive waterhouse

Rowan Jones has never been a great kick - if you look at his career stats he is one of the very few players who actually handballs more than he kicks (among the rest of the Eagles squad only Kerr and Glass are also in this category*, while Cox is close). Jones has always looked to be better passing the ball off by hand.



*Technically Paul Johnson is also in this category, but having only had one possession so far in his career I don't think much can be read into that...

Adkins for his pace around the ground, needs to get the ball more often - even though he's had limited opportunities this season - although his WAFL is impeccable

Read, if fit, should replace Munro. Read is a hard worker, gives 100% like Daniel Chick does, before his knee injury, established a reputation as a hardnut. We need his toughness against the Lions - he's got the brawn but the brains as well.

Collica for the class that Glass hasn't got. Solid defender and rarely beaten, would be good against small and pacey forwards. Collica's strengths are both in the air and on the ground - his skills are second to none, and he rarely makes a blunder.
There is no substitute for class, but there is for Glass.

Carroll instead of mdougall because Carroll must be given another chance to prove himself - mcdougall has time, carroll does not. Carroll has started on the bench and struggled to settle in, however, when starting on the field, he normally works his way into the game and excels.

Lynch, the old gorilla in mcintosh is still there but not the speed, while Lynch looks deceptively slow, he is quite quick for his size. Lynch simply needs game time in the AFL, not the WAFL, even though his WAFL form has merited a debut this season.

Smokey: Mark Seaby - this guy is in the mold of a Darcy.
He can ruck, mark and kick goals like a big rover, his athleticism is also a great advantage, due to a basketball background - would like to see how he would fit in as a second ruckman - we need one while the big ****croach is injured.

Couldnt agree more. McIntosh will be a perfect matchup for Lynch and I wouldnt be surprised to see him lining up on him come Sunday. Whoosha is big on matchups regardless of form.

If he hasn't played a game at years end, what will they do with him?? Thats two years on the list and still not got a senior game. Would they delist him in that time??

Provided he can kick straight, I'd like to see him tried in at Full Forward at some point. Given his height, it does make him hard to match up on. I've always been abit of a fan of having a really tall full forward. (Quite funny, considering we have close to the smallest full forward going around in Haynes and I've given him as much support as anyone )

Seaby won't be delisted. We do however have a lot of ruckmen on our list: Gardiner, Cox, McDougall, Seaby, Johnson and Beeck. Thats too many. I wouldn't mind seeing one of the backup guys traded for a tall defender with some AFL experience.

Its not that many considering McDougall primarily isn't a ruckman but can just play in there. And Beeck is on the rookie list and probably won't be around too much longer. He's 22 this year isn't he?? he's at least 21.

Also, Johnson is in his first year on our list, whilst Seaby is yet to get a senior game

Considering the Eagles redrafted him to the rookie list after he didn't fire a shot in 2 years, Beeck is now going Gangbusters in the WAFL and is probably even better than Seaby as the form ruckman of the WAFL. It would be silly to delist him now after all the work the club has put into him.

Fair enough - living in Sydney its pretty hard to know how a guy is going in the WAFL.

They should probably promote him and give him a go. Theres no point having a guy as old as he is on the rookie list.

And you would have attended how many WAFL games this year to reach that conclusion?

The question is future upside.

I'd say the player under pressure for a place in the squad is MacDougall and the ruckman under pressure is Cox (who is perfect trade bait to several Eastern States sides), though personally, I'm a fan and would like to keep him unless the deal was really sweet.

For athleticism, Seaby would be the way to go in the ruck for the future, assuming he can physically cope with it (which we don't know yet).

Johnson is more likely to become a KPP with pinch-hitting in the ruck from what I've seen so far.
