If a huge war broke out, and many countries are involved and Australia are low on troops, would you sign up???

I would! i damn sure will!!!
War - a great life changing oppurtunity, your life will be at risk, but your doing it for your country.
Ive heard people say they wont go, cause they are afraid.
Well, i think they are not men (or women)!!!

whats your thoughts?

No, I would not go to war. Forget about war being glorious and all that other crap, its not. I'm not going to write a whole essay as I hope people's common sense will prevail. The only condition where I might go to war is if I was defending my country. I have no interest in other countries squables.

War - a great life changing opportunity,

WTF?

What sort of a great life changing opportunity would war be?

The chance to see mates die before your eyes; The chance of injury through shrapnel, bombs, landmines, etc.; The exposure to disease and/or biological weapons; The chance of having difficulty re-adjusting to life back home if you're luckily enough to get back home!

War is something that no one in their right mind would look forward to, and is something that should always be avoided.

My sister's in the Army and has already served twice in East Timor, so if a war did break out there's a fair possibility she'd be involved.

I'd prefer not to go to war, but I wouldn't entirely rule out the possibility of being involved (I'd prefer if I had a chance to be involved in supporting and caring for injured soldiers and civilians rather than fighting).

I definitely wouldn't be running for the opportunity that's for sure!

Not unless Australia was definitely threatened, And by threatened I mean invaded not just one terrorist attack. Otherwise im not going to get myself killed for someone else, they want to fight they can sort it out themselves.

i cant think of the diggers name but he was buried today he has always said after coming back for ww1 that war is not the answer in any situation.call me coward call me what you like but i take heed to what this great aussie has been saying.
cheers!

Nope.

Imagine if everyone said no. There would be no wars.

G.

We had this argument at work today "what if there was a draft?".

I said I wouldn't go. Rather be a live chicken than a dead duck. Being in jail is better than being shot at.

I said pretty much the same thing as you Gabriel, "what if nobody wanted to fight?" Then there'd be no war. Let the politicians have a punch up instead.

When we go to the footy, we all love to see a player put his body on the line, an act of selfless courage, of intestinal fortitude.
Whereas the player who squibs out of a physical confrontation is universally reviled.

In layman's terms we all hate to see a coward

oh sorry i forgot to add "if australia was threatened" then yes.

- KingyOrTheKing - Um... Women do go to war aswell.. u know...

At the moment I dont have a choice ;)
I saw some s**t in Timor, and I hope that other people dont 'get' to see it. It's not pretty, and it's not glamorous. However, I love my country, and what it stands for. If I was tapped on the shoulder tomorrow and told to pack my kit bag, then I would (For those smart arses out there, I'm sure in todays caring sharing ADF that I could find some way out of it if I so desired).

Simply put, and not wishing to sound sanctimonious, I guess one of the reasons that I chose the way I did was so that hopefully others wouldn't have to choose. If they do want to join though, then great. If they think that they can help the effort by doing something else, then thats also fine. We all (well most of us - and I'm looking in your direction Freo FC) contribute to our nation in different ways.

What really pisses me off is that fvcking wan.ker in the Herald Sun today wanting to burn the aussie flag, being proudly un-patriotic, and generally pissing on the opportunities that others provided for him. As far as I'm concerned, people like that don't deserve the 'privilege' of being an Australian. If I was in a bar with that fella, I would have serious concerns for his safety. That sh*t just burns me up!!!!

No i wouldnt go, i dont have a desire to die. However if it was desperate and we needed more man power to avoid losing the war then yes id strap on my helmut grab a gun and keep my head down.

I don't think anyone would be a sook.

I'm sure a lot of people that go out to war, would be scared.
Hypothetically:
Personally if my country is on the brink of tumbling down, i'm sure most of us would go. The last thing i would want on Earth is for Australia to be taken over in a war.

I think its great we've got someone from our Defense Forces in BigFooty. I congratulate you for your efforts in East Timor.

Paul Coats is a criminal. He almost makes me ashamed to be going to Melbourne University.

I personally subscribe to the philosophy that there are no winners in war, only losers. So my answer would have to be I dunno.

I was in the british merchant navy when they asked for volunteers for the Falklands war.

I passed, thanks very much.

If George Bush did everybody the courtesy of sharing the evidence that the afghans are 'responsible' for the atrocity they might get a better response.

Notice how they never name a country which has some serious defence. China for example.

Well once upon a time I had the great misfortune of witnessing somebody accidently shoot themselves dead in a nasty accident with a hunting rifle.

This person lierally had their head blown off by that gun.

Its not pretty, its not glorious, its not a wonderful challenge as somebody else here said.

Its just a horrific gory shambles and an experience I would not wish anyone to go through.

Ultra-violence of this kind when you witness it in the flesh is horrific and traumatises you and leaves you with haunting memories seared into your brain for the rest of your life.

Thats why war veterans are so reluctant to actually talk at lenght about their experiences, they are horrific and its still way too painful for these guys to talk openly about what they have seen and felt.

Its just a horrible business that I would not wish anybody to go through.

I don't want to be shot at, I don't want to be horribly wounded, I don't want to see other human beings suffering unspeakable agony.

War is not a glorious patriotic duty to be taken up with macho enthusiasm.

War is a tragic and bloody shambles where there are no winners, just the dead and the memory of the dead carried by the survivors who suffer evry day for their good fortune.

cheers

Under no circumstances would I go to war for this country or any other.

I'm not a hippy, or technically a Pacifist, but I do actually want to live my life for as long as possible.

Call me a coward, call me unpatriotic, I call myself smart...

P.S. Great post BSA

Yeah, but putting your body on the line in footy wont usually result in death, whereas going to war could more than likely. If there was a draft, I don't know....I'd probably dissapear up in Queensland or something, but it would have to be something pretty serious before I went to war.

Unless I could be trained as a fighter pilot, then I would go.
