Play Nice Was that Gaffs last game for WC?

Ok home from the game.

Shocking stuff, Gaff will get 5-6 weeks.

Having been at the game though...there was no replay on the big screen of the Brayshaw hit...at all...not at the breaks, in play etc.

So please ease up on the ‘rabid scum cheering for subhuman bastard’ stuff and be realistic. Gaff was definitely getting cheers after Johnson/Ryan rightly crunched him but the majority had no idea what happened prior to that.
I find it a little hard to believe no one saw Brayshaw come from the ground, mouth gushing blood, from behind play.

Two things all you experts out their

Gaff and Brayshaw are good friends so to say this was intentional is a absolute joke.

If Gaff is so dirty, dog, thug that is getting thrown around go and search YouTube and take alook at some of the hits that our now AFL legends did and tell me if you are going to call them out.

Yes he did the wrong thing and will have to live with his actions forever but some of the things written here about a guy player a very brutal game is over the top.
Doesnt matter if they are mates. It was still intentional. Unless his left arm had an isolated bout of epilepsy for half a second...

Because there is an exemption for sporting contests.

This goes beyond what the exemption really covers (not that there is a clear definition), but neither the sporting body (in the this case the AFL) nor the courts would be eager to open the door on that can of worms.

There is precedent (kind of) in soccer - a Scottish footballer named Duncan Ferguson got three months in jail in the 1990s for head butting an opposition player.

The sentence was due to his previous brushes with the law and he was on probation, but just because the act happened during a professional sporting contest doesn’t necessarily mean the perpetrator can’t be charged.

It won’t and shouldn’t happen here imo, completely different situation. But if someone did something completely outrageous on a footy pitch I’d guess they could still be charged with assault.

Lawyer here and that's not 100 percent true.

A sportsman taking to a field
Is presumed to consent to a certain level of violence as being part of the game.

That's why boxers dont go to jail for punching each other. They consent to the violence.

Ditto athletes in other contact sports.

That said, depending on the sport, and the nature of the offence, a player most definately can be charged with a criminal offence in the right circumstances.

The offence generally needs to be something unusual or beyond the pale though.

Yeah but I think that comes into it. If he is assessed to have deliberately punched the head the Eagles lawyer may argue he deliberately tried to punch his chest instead
Give him reckless if you want, the injury result is what the tribunal bases its suspension on and brayshaw is in surgery as we speak with a broken jaw and 4 displaced teeth, the worst injury due to a strike since Lings fractured Cheek in 08. Gaff is gone for at minimum 8 weeks id accept that now if i was an eagles fan no point in holding onto false hope.

I expect that the AFL will only give him 5 so that he can play the GF if West Coast make it. One thing the AFL will never do is do the honest thing.

If he got 5 and WC made it, he probably wouldn't have played for 7 weeks.

It'd be a big call bringing him straight into a GF after a break like that, especially when it'd probably be his last game for the club.

Well obviously some did, but not everyone would've, which is what it is about isn't it?

Reckon he will get 4

Has a good record

Think this actually would be more likely to make him stay and repay them after missing the next however many games
He deserves 4 i am a West Coast fanatic, there is absolutely no reason to swing at another player. yes they will argue he was going for his chest but Andrew Gaff is a leader at the club and its not on. He will get a 4 your right due to his good record

He should get eight weeks, and then the time that Bradshaw is out of the game added on.

If Bradshaw doesn’t play until round five next year for example, Gaff is out until round 13.

Go hard, or call the police AFL; the ball is in your court.

Just so he can miss the finals, how beneficial to Hawthorn

Pathetic coward. Season over.

Much worse than Cameron’s hit on Andrews.
You can talk and when Vickery hit Cox what was that a tough play? Yes it was wrong, but he will get suspended. Andrew Gaff has barely put a foot wrong his entire career. Agreed its a dog act and he will get suspended

I was there they didn't show it up on the screen at all, so all the crowd saw was your players roughing him up for the rest of the game (fair enough as well). But how are they suppose to know what happened otherwise?
They have these new-fangled things called mobile phones these days. Plenty in the area I was had seen it for themselves and still chose to cheer Gaff like a homecoming hero.
