Seeing Derm on the Front Bar last night brought back some fun memories.

The Tip Top and banana ads, his antics on the ground......

I was 14 when Derm came to the club at the start of 95 and had always been a fan. Would have been awesome to have him from the start.

I knew Derm was a rabbid Pie supporter as a kid and have always loved seeing players play for the clubs they grew up barracking for, not just Pie supporters, much like the father son rule.

Derm was good for us too. Not only did he kick 30 in 15 games he helped a young Sav have his best year in the AFL. The one thing Sav really lacked was a touch of mongrel.

Mongrel was something Derm definitely wasn't lacking in.

But in reality Derm was washed up by the time he got to the Pies, and who knows what we would have picked up with the number 10 selection?

So what other players do you think where washed up by the time they landed at the Pies, or wished we'd picked up a year or two earlier?

Would also like to hear a few more stories about Derm with the Pies. Be they good, bad or just plain ugly. :)

Derm was pick 10 in the preseason draft. Big difference.

True.

Who else was available? Paul Roos?

Don't get me wrong. Im not disappointed we got Derm, on the contrary. Just a thought, thinking longer term.

I assume without looking Roos went earlier.

Besides we could have had Roos at the end of 1990.

His career was cruelly (and some may argue crudely) cut short by a neck injury at age 29. Nothing to do with being washed up.

What a dud thread!!!!

Ouch. Tad harsh!!!!

I certainly never said Blake was washed up.
I think he was just starting to hit his straps with us when he was cleaned up by Notting.

If others think Blake was washed up, well that's their opinion, and their entitled to it.

If anyone has other stories about Derm and his time at the Pies I for one am interested to hear from them.

Or if they think of a player that may have been all but washed up when they got to the Pies maybe they could give their reasons.

Am always happy to learn more about players who pulled on the jumper, even if they only played a game or two for us.

Barry Mitchell and Teaser are the biggest ones out of this list. Both were great players at the swans but totally washed up at the pies.
I don't think Paul Hawke was washed up, he just struggled for a senior spot in our incredibly good midfield of the late 80s.

Perty was on one leg when he got here, but he was still smart enough to play ok for a few years, he was nothing like his Fitzroy days for us.

And still one of the best full backs I've ever seen wearing B&W.

Disagree on Raines, had arguably 1 of his best seasons in his last year at the Pies and went on to play 3-4 more years after he left.

Comprehensive list.

Paul Hawke interesting player.
Runner up in Copeland to Gavin Brown I think it was.
In 1989.
Next year didn’t get a game; yet was emergency for GF.
Tony Francis and Scott Russell probably kept him out more or less.

If we had a 22 then not a 20 he probably plays quite a bit and makes the GF.
Probably Ron Mckeown was other to have gotten a gig if it was 22.

Hawke went back to Sydney soon after and just played a bit.
