Watching the prelim finals confirmed my thoughts as to the reasons why we're not there.

1. Hard/mature bodies - we don't yet have the mature bodies to stand up in and stick tackles with any regularity.

2. Skills - the best teams protect the ball, especially coming out of defence, a lot better than we do.

3. Defensive pressure - we have our moments when it's very good but the last 4, along with Adelaide, are able to suffocate the opposition for sustained periods without sacrificing any of their scoreboard potential in doing so. We too often allow teams to take the footy the length of the ground, largely uncontested.

There are some others for sure, no doubt, but IMO these are the three critical areas we need to improve on over the next couple of seasons to get to the stage where we become a contender.

#1 is something that will come with experience/pre seasons, but the other two can definately be worked on, though 3 may be partly explained as a result of 1. My only concern is that over the last few years our players seem to put on a lot less muscle than their counterparts at Brisbane, WC, Adelaide etc. I'm not sure if this is a result of the physical make up of the players we draft or we have less of an emphasis on weights.

It is also worth noting that the lack of 1 and 3 is felt most acutely in our midfield. This is the area we need to get right more than any other.

The positive to come out of the Adelaide loss was that we were clearly exposed in all of these areas so it should provide the reality check we need to take that next step (though I'm sure the coaching staff were already well aware of these deficiencies - but it might help them get the message to some players who may have got ahead of themselves).

I know some on this board see some similiarites between us and the dogs when Eade first took over. IMO this is reasonable. They perhaps had better skills than us but struggled defensively and looked like boys against men, as we often do. They were able to correct these deficiencies relatively quickly and while they are a more skillful team (at the same point anyway) we have a much better KP stock to build around, which gives me a lot of confidence in where we might be in two or three years.

I also think this off season will be huge. We are losing Lovett - will we be well compensated? Will we snare a young star (a Higgins clone, please) with our first pick? Or will we roll the dice on Burgoyne getting back to 100%? Or will guys like Myers, Houli, Lonergan, Prismall and Reimers progress to the point where this off season is no more important than any other?

Either way, the club has a lot work on, but at least we aren't like richmond in 2001 where we think we're not that far away. We know we are far away, but definately have the potential to get there, if everyone is willing to work hard enough and fortune is kind to us.

Great OP! :thumbsu:

I agree with pretty much all of it. Can I just say that I've probably changed my mind 2-3 times with Burgoyne. I think we're going to have to give up too much for him and we're probably going to get a bigger "win" if we simply trade Lovett for a pick and pick up a Tuck or a Harris in the pre-season until our own grown talent have matured - Myers, Zaharakis and 2 top 10 draft picks. Tough call, I'll put my faith in the powers that be and sit on the fence! :D

Not sure our game plan will allow us to put enough defensive pressure on the opposition over the course of a game or season.

You can't expect players to run their butt off giving options and then go just as hard the other way. It's physically impossible. You need to set up the structure to cater for this and I think we are way behind experienced coaches in Malthouse and co.

It's quite funny how most of our runners stopped running and had a pretty poor last month of the season.

Stanton (ankle), Lovett (corked thigh) and Winderlich (back) were missing or carrying an injury and Prismall (knee) and Welsh (leg) couldn't finish off the season after lengthy time on the sidelines.

There's 15%-20% of our best team that were underdone/missing, too much for any team.

Did anyone read that article in the footy record, written by Knights, talking about his game style? He said that he will gradually implement different facets. I don't imagine that Knights wants the game plan to eventuate as an all-out attacking one.

*Two-way running is both a mental and physical (fitness) thing and I think it will be a focus this pre- season. It was the area which hindered us most this season IMO, particularly on big grounds.

*Great OP, by the way. Couldn't help but notice last night the great difference in skill and class b/w us and the likes of Geelong, the way they were able to operate under extreme pressure as well as delivering the ball to advantage. Surely this will come with experience and having the young group come through together, much like Geelong. When was the last time a fit lineup resembling our 'best 22' strung a few games together?

*McPhee's comment about us not focussing on the opposition but rather our own gameplan was interesting. Maybe next year we will see more games like the Sydney- while not being flashy, it demonstrated Knights' and the team's capacity to alter the gameplan to suit the oppositon while retaining some of our attacking flair.

*Will the likes of Reimers, Zaharakis and Prismall stand up next year and be the classy mids we need? All are good decision-makers with nice disposal. Here's hoping. I've conceded the fact that we probably won't snare Burgoyne..

I wouldn't be surprised if Knights has us taking a more measured approach next season. He originally said something along the lines that the idea of the current gameplan was to find out which players can make good decisions playing at a quick tempo. Surely he has an opinion on that now. Another couple pre seasons and we should be capable of running both ways like all the top 4 teams do.

I do recall him mentioning something like that.

1. Mature bodies
2. Inside ball winners

If you have them two things, you're always a chance at grabbing that premiership. At the moment; we don't have much of either to be honest. Next year we should see an improvement though, definitely.
