It has been said on PRE that Wayne is back as an assistant coach, reported in the Hun today, no link but apparently on page 115.

What are peoples thoughts?

Personally I think it is good he is back, he has had experience away from Richmond and now has come back to where it all started hopefully to tidy up some unfinished buisness.

Thats right, I am talking about flags he couldnt get as a player.

By all accounts he's been a pretty good assistant at the Bulldogs. And I'd definitely be happy to see him back. Finally get some Richmond legends back to the club!

Campbell to Richmond just reported on SEN, FWIW...

Has been impressive with the Dogs, Eade is a rap for him and he would be pretty good for the Tiges.

Good to see a club legend heading back to Tigerland! Can't help wondering if he is the next senior coach-in-waiting?

Boy, with all these positives, I'm starting to feel like PeterSasseGum!

Therefore...
Well done to Richmond on shoring up the club's future by bringing back a former legend, thus ensuring a robust connection between the Tigers of old and the new breed, giving all Tiger supporters a vision of a great future both on and off field, and...and...umm...well, you know!:)

Haven't really followed his progress at the the doggies apart form the fact that when he first went there, he was loathed by many doggy fans. I take it quite a few have had a change of heart....and if so, why?

Gun. 4th on All-Time games at Richmond, Captain, All Aust, 4 B&F's, State player and a great football brain etc etc.
Will help Cotchin, Foley, Lids, Tambo and White in the guts.
Great to have him back!!!!!

great news:thumbsu: good to have a Richmond champion back. he has done a good job at the doggies, now he'll do a great job at the tigers

interesting move this, no doubt inspired by freezer, a smart operator, who would appear to have designs on the main gig , I always say, there's alot to be said for being in the right place at the right time...Good luck to him, he was a champion tiger in every sense:thumbsu:
TW was taking credit for the move on the radio this morning Bo.

"This appointment has been three years in the making. I spoke to Wayne soon after he finished playing, and we both believed it was in his best interests for him to gain further experience at another club with the view to one day returning to Richmond.

"I always found Wayne to be a highly intelligent player. His football knowledge was as good as anything I have ever seen. I always thought he had a future in coaching."

Ex-captain Campbell returns to Richmond

By Mic Cullen 11:14 AM Fri 10 October, 2008

FORMER Richmond captain Wayne Campbell is returning to Punt Road as an assistant coach.

Campbell played 297 games for the Tigers in 15 seasons, won the Jack Dyer medal four times and captained the club from 2001 to 2004.

After two years as an assistant at the Western Bulldogs, the 36-year-old's return encourages a shuffling of the coaching staff at Richmond – with Campbell looking after the midfield, Brian Royal the forward line and David King retaining the backline while Jade Rawlings (Coburg coach) and Craig McCrae will look after player development.

Campbell said he was delighted to return to his football home.

"I’m really excited about the opportunity to return to Tigerland – I have plenty of great memories there and I can’t wait to make a contribution," he said.

"I'm looking forward to working with Terry and the rest of the coaching staff. The Tigers have an impressive young list, and I hope to help the club’s push back into the finals.

"I’d also like to thank the Western Bulldogs for the experience I have gained as an assistant coach in the last two seasons."

Senior coach Terry Wallace, entering his fifth season at the helm, was equally happy with the announcement.

"We are thrilled to have someone of Wayne’s calibre and he is held in the highest regard at Richmond," he said.

Yeah, Terry said he wanted him as an Assistant straight after his playing days but told Wayne to get some experience else where, first.

Link is on the AFL site.

Welcome back Wayne :thumbsu:

Thats great if we want to teach our players to pick up soft wide negative possessions and cause no damage going forward

Pleasantly surprised to see this is the only negative post so far about Campbell. I was expecting a lot more like this, but its nice to see so many positive Tigers this morning.... or is that just cause it Friday?

I never liked him as a player to be honest always felt he picked up soft possesions and was never very damaging even though he played a lot of games for us, but coaching is different to playing so good luck to him but i feel very uneasy about this appointment.

don't worry it will be a flood by the end of the day, everyone is holding there breath on potential trades

I'm quite happy with this.

TW stated that he and WC thought it was best he went to another club to see life outside the RFC. It sounds as if a return was always on the cards.

I don't think he was the greatest player to pull on the Yellow and Black but a someone stated, coaching is a different ball game and from all reports he has done very well at the Doggies.

Thanks, Kyusss.

Actually I'm secretly rather fond of the SasseGumm boy.
He adds that special something that's missing from other boards...

Apart from that, Wayne Campbell is well respected at the Dogs for his insights. IMO he will make a senior coach. Good luck to him now that he's back home. Always good to see players going back to their original clubs, especially after gaining experience elsewhere. I reckon Leon Cameron's a smarter coach as a result of the time he spent with you guys, albeit as a player.

Win for everyone with Campbell, hope Tiges fans feel the same.

I think its a great appointment, things are looking up for us at Tigerland. IThis is the most confident I've been (looking ahead to next season), that I have been in a long time. Finally we are putting our best foot forward across all football departments.
