I am a mad tiger supporter, and I was speaking to a mate of mine about how Choco Williams has come on board. We were discussing how Richmond were starting to get a high quality coaching staff on board, hoping to guide us to that next premiership. We rattled off some names, Justin Leppitsch,Brendon Lade, Choco Williams, blokes that have tasted success in their time. Then we got to Wayne Campbell. My mate proceded to tell that there in lies our problem. Part of the old school Richmond, part of that crap culture that has been around the club for years. It got me thinking. What are peoples thoughts on this? Do you think that if we get rid of Campbell, we would be killing off another bit of cancer ( as my mate calls it) that has exisited as the club for far too long?

No problem at all with Wayne. Always professional and hard at it player. Never saw anything from him that would lead me to think he would be anything but quality regarding coaching. For me there would not be a team that would not have wanted Wayne if he ever wanted to leave the RFC during his playing days. Always gave 100% and can hold his head high. Unless anyone can tell me different ?

Who is you mate. Someone involved with the club?

Dogs rated Campbell as a coach as well before he came back. What's your mates opinion of Leon Cameron, he played for us as well, he a cancer? Matty Knights? Each week there was 22 blokes taking the field when Wayne played, I don't think he was the big issue.
Billy Nicholls, Tim Fleming, John Rambotis, just to name a few superstars that played along side Wayne, they may have been part of the problem methinks.

Campbell isn't involved with the match day work. He is the manager of our leadership development. He teaches our group how to be successful leaders. I have absolutely no problem with him being involved with our club in this role.

so were giving him a full time wage to tell them how to be good leaders? isnt that something dimma and assistants could do?

Not involved with the footy club, just a mate having his opinion. For what it is worth, I don't have a problem with Campbell, loved him as a player. I was just interested to see if anyone else was in the same head space as my friend.

No, very different skill set.

Lol, so in corporate companies, what's your opinion of Human Resources and learning and development departments? Don't these entities tell leaders within businesses what the required behaviors and skill sets are? Think before you post.

I can't believe the bad press that Wayne Campbell still gets around the football world. he was the best player at our club for about 10 years - better than Richardson or Knights. But he seems to be the lightning rod for our failures in the 90s, while Knights and Richardson get the sympathy.

I always thought he was a very smart footballer who would make a good coach......................

My worst period of Richmond supporter was during the Campbell time. Just that look of panic and the lack of vision, the horrible kicks. I'm not going to get involved with this because I really had a real unhealthy anti Campbell thing going for a long time.
He was hard at it, professional, good mark and good kick for goal but just that look of panic on his face when in the mid field just erked me. Should have been a 150 game half back flanker at the most.

Use to say that the opposition coaches would instruct their midfielders to make sure Wayne got plenty of the ball. The more he got it the less chance we were of winning. Aren't I horrible.

Your mate shared his opinion which is fair enough, but how the hell would he know anything about what Wayne is doing at the club and whether or not he is good or bad at his job?

Oh geez I hope this is a joke :D

One of the best footballers period at getting hands on ball, ball on boot, ball extracted at the blink of an eye. Tuck does it now without the class of Campbell. (and no, Campbell wasnt as hard and tough as Tuck)

Your mate is off the mark
Cambo is regarded by Dimma and certainly not a cancer at our club.
Proof is in the pudding...what exactly is he doing wrong in his job?
From where I stand, it's all good

In the 90s there was a time when the AFL players completed a survey - one of the questions was 'Who is the best player at each club (other than your own)'. Campbell always won for Richmond.

That's not umpires opinions, fans opinions, or media - it's the players. Also worth noting that during the period where their careers overlapped, Campbell won 4 B&Fs and Knights won one - which was Campbell's 2nd season. (Knights also won one before Campbell's debut). Richardson won his B&F after Campbell retired.

So I really don't know how you can say Knights and Richardson were better players.

This redneck bluster that lashes our best players through the darkest era really irks me. Never mind every useless campaigner we drafted r 1 that didnt fire a shot, blame our most decorated players...yeah that makes sense

If campbell can contribute then of course his role should continue

I think a lot of people seem to be missing the point. As I interpreted the OP, the question was whether him being still around is akin to hanging on to the past, when we sucked. Not whether he was a good player or not.

I think he's suggesting clearing out all those types from that era for a fresh start, with nothing left of that period of mediocrity. Unfortunately that would also require removing the best president we've had in ages. I have no idea if Campbell is good at his job, but I have every confidence that the people who need to know, do know.

As long as he's performing he should be welcomed and celebrated as a club champion. As soon as he is not doing his job, he should be removed from his position, with our thanks.

EDIT: just read your last sentence and.... I agree!
