Heard on Mark Aiston's show on 5AA this morning that while the Crows are keen for Carey to play from the goalsquare, that Carey is keen to play at CHF to prove that he is still the best CHF going around. When Mike Sheehan was told this in a later segment on the same show, he said that he saw that as a good sign that Carey was set for a good year as his confidence and arrogance was back and that plus his ability made him the great player that he is.

I personally think the Crows are the ones that have it right as we already have a good CHF in Mark Stevens and a marking FF is what has been lacking in our structure. Also I think it would prolong Carey's career to 3 maybe even 4 years more whereas IMO he would struggle to see out 2 at CHF due to the physical pressure a CHF receives. Plus from the goal square he would have Ronnie Burns hanging around to swoop like a seagull on a hot chip for anything that Carey doesn't mark.

A reasonable compromise may well be to play Carey essentially at FF and Stevens at CHF, but allow them to alternate for short periods during a game, as Stevo is no slouch as a leading or marking FF either.

Your thoughts?

I think the Crows coaching staff will have the Duck playing out of full forward & mostly insde the 50m ark, the Kings mind might be willing & rarin to go to prove he is still as good as ever but the body will ask the question of that idea if he over does it to soon,

If he is managed correctly on field i can see 3 good years for Carey & the Adelaide Football Club & with an ounce of luck another flag or 2,

Hrmm. Interesting to hear that Carey wants to prove his ability at CHF. I'd personally rather him stay at FF, but I guess there's no real harm in letting him play at CHF (with Stevens at FF maybe?) for a couple of games here and there, but maybe for not the majority of games.

It depends on what ground we play.

For instance on the SCG, being a smaller ground we should lay him in the goalsquare as the kicks often go past the CHF on that ground.

At AS, we could push Stevo up a bit from last year, just 10-15 metres which would give Carey the whole 50 metre arc to roam and Stevens could mark everything that comes out of defence.

I think it should depend on the opposition, ground, etc. but mainly Carey at FF, Sevo at CHF, occassionally swapping if the team needs a lift or if we are completely on top to try something different.

Some very good points made here:

Macca, IMO you are spot on that Carey will be prodominantly FF with Stevo @ CHF. However, if the forward line is struggling they could be swapped around as Stevo is a capable FF too. Also, if either could be switched to defence if an opposition forward is dominating.

Noddy, I also reckon the Crows hierachy would be thinking they can get more years out of Carey if he plays mostly FF, which is less demanding. In fact if all goes well, he could play another 5 years! ;)
