Blues axe veteran recruiter Wayne Hughes
Carlton is restructuring its recruiting department on the eve of the 2014 season, having made veteran recruiter Wayne Hughes redundant.

The Blues have pushed Hughes, the former recruiting boss who presided over several national drafts since the mid 2000s, before he was supplanted by current head of recruiting Shane Rogers in 2011. They will replace Hughes by upgrading a part-timer to full-time. The club is also set to add a full-time analyst to the recruiting division.

This brings about feelings of when one parent splits from the other abusive parent....

"Blues recruiting manager Wayne Hughes explains his decision to draft 3 smaller players, including Kane Lucas, Marcus Davies and Rohan Kerr, at the 2009 NAB AFL draft rather than a tall player to replace the now-departed Brendan Fevola.
Hughes' explanation comes in the wake of some backlash by Carlton supporters over his decisions at the draft.

"We rated Kane Lucas higher than any of the tall players left in the draft at pick 10 as John Butcher had already gone to Port Adelaide. You will find the draft full of tall players taken first round who didn't work," Hughes said"

I'm not bagging Lucas here but a Talia or Black would have be very handy for us right now. The selections of Kerr and Davies were woeful as well. With Luke Mitchell and Pat McCarthy gone we have 2 players left from the 2009 and 2010 national draft.

I wouldn't worry too much about looking at #43 & #59 selected players.
Not too many after Davies that you'd kill for. You could almost argue that there weren't any.

Anyway, I still feel that our development had as much to do with players not coming on as for any recruitment blunders.

Unfortunately though Hughes will be remembered as the man that fluffed selections.
Point is though that he was under the employ of others at the CFC. Maybe we should look elsewhere if we really have to look.

Get Williams back
I have it on good authority that Luke Williams left after a bust up with Andrew McKay over the selection of Patrick Cripps, who Williams had worked on and didn’t rate as better than a 40th pick, however McKay had watched him in 1 game and rated him so highly that McKay overruled the whole recruiting department and made him our first selection.. Williams who valued the work he had done working under Stephen Wells where he had complete control over recruiting thought this was ridiculous, he took it to Sticks and Sticks response was that the club would back in a club legend in McKay over Williams. So Luke promptly tendered his resignation.

Blues axe veteran recruiter Wayne Hughes
Hughes was the recruiter responsible for drafting Bryce Gibbs, Marc Murphy and Matthew Kreuzer at pick No. 1 over three consecutive seasons, with Josh Kennedy, arguably the club's best first-round selection at pick No. 4 in 2005, the same year Murphy was drafted.

Some of Carlton's other top 20 choices – Shaun Hampson and Shaun Griggs – have been offloaded to the Tigers, while Kane Lucas, pick No. 12 in 2009 and Matthew Watson (pick 17 in 2010) have not yet established themselves as core players.

Jake Niall. :D

I guess you can snip Betts, Garlett, Jamison and Jacobs from the article because it suits your angle as a Collingwood flog.

Hughes would know more than Emma Quayle and the amateurs on BF who are quoted come draft time. ;)

Bullshit.

Bullshit.

Gotta laugh at the suggestion that Mckay would overrule Williams over one game. Rogers has already stated that they were keen on Cripps with emphasis on his ability as a extractor of the ball in stoppage situations.

Something did go down though and it probably wasn't pleasant.

Anyway, all the best to Hughes and look forward to the new recruiters and set-up.

You're criticising the selection of Lucas because he isn't a KPP. o_O

Nathan Djerrkurra, Simon Hogan, Scott Simpson, Dawson Simpson and Dan McKenna or Browne, Armfield, Hampson, Grigg and Mark Austin?

Stephen Wells and Luke Williams picked the first three, but was gifted Selwood and Tom Hawkins when we got Gibbs and Austin.

Williams will get the benefit of the doubt...

It's time to get a younger recruiter and fresh blood in with Hughes responsible for drafting Brad and Josh Bootsma. He's been around for a while.
