Wayne Phillips secured for SACA coaching position

South Australia's West End Redbacks will be coached by former Australian wicketkeeper Wayne Phillips for the next two years.

The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) made the announcement today.

Phillips has been senior coach at the Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy over the last seven years and was coach of the winning Australian Under-19 side at the ICC Under-19 World Cup held in New Zealand in 2001/02. He most recently coached the side to victory over the touring England Under-19 team.

Phillips, who will prepare the South Australian side for the Pura Cup and ING Cup competitions, played 27 Tests and 48 one-day internationals for Australia and 114 first-class games for South Australia.

The SACA's chief executive, Michael Deare said: "The SACA spent considerable time recruiting Wayne, because we were determined to select the right candidate for this critical position.

"Wayne not only was an outstanding cricketer, but he has proven his ability in coaching and development. Coupled with his enthusiasm for the game, and his excellent communication skills, we are confident Wayne is the right person to lead the Redbacks to success during the next few years."

He replaces another former international Greg Chappell in the position.

And news from WA is that they will start interviewing a number of coaching applicants in 2 weeks and hope to make a decision in June sometime.

there's no better way to get a team playing well than forced enjoyment.

It's good to see Wayne Phillips bring some passion to the job, I think that was something that Greg Chappell lacked. I think we have had too many players playing for South Australia over the last few years who are simply there for the sake of playing first class cricket for just anyone and not there because they desperately want to play for South Australia. That may be a harsh comment but that's the impression I get from watching the Redbacks at times. There needs to be some more passion and pride instilled in wearing the Red Cap and if Phillips can do that then I think our performances will improve from those we have now. We do need however to try and get some more home-grown talent coming through the ranks in the next few years, because over the last few years its been a bit thin.
