Hi all,

I've been organising over the past few weeks with the WCE Victorian office to get a members seat for the Derby in Round 6.

As such, I've recieved a fair few letters from the office, and all of the letters say that the club is 'A division of Indian Pacific Limited'.

Is this a byproduct of how we were formed? Is this company operated by/for the WA Football Commission or someone else?

Just seems weird.

As an aside, efforts to get a ticket successful My first trip to Subi will be a Derby!

Indian Pacific Ltd is the formerly listed public company that owned and operated the West Coast Eagles.

Indian Pacific was delisted in 1990 and all of its shares are now owned by the WAFC. The WAFC now holds the licences for West Coast & Freo and sub-licences them to Indian Pacific Ltd & Fremantle Football Club Ltd. Both then operate the football clubs through those unlisted public companies under the ultimate control of their sole shareholder.

When those Freo tossers start going on about "corporate" West Coast and them being a club, the only differences are (a) they have "Club" in the name of their unlisted public company and we don't and (b) they allow 1 (?) board member to be elected by the public - which is largely meaningless as they have a single shareholder who has ultimate control and the unelected members control the board.

But yes, in answer to your question, Indian Pacific Ltd does operate a sub-licence which it trades as West Coast Eagles ....

I have a prosepectus from 86

"Indian pacific ltd is offering the public an opportunity to participate in a perth based sports, leisure and entertainment company, A major activity of which will be the management of the new national football team" The West Coast Eagles" which will participate in the espanded VFL.

The Company seeks to Raise 10.5 million by the issue of 14 Million shares of 50 cents each and 7000 unsecured notes of $500 each.

As WA football was near broke (Not as bad as the VFL) they had to raise the cash upfront. As it was the mid to late 80's the style of the time was to list a company that had very little to offer but a dream. The dream folded when the eagles had a horrible 89 and so did the listed company. Then the Eagles were transferred to be run by the WAFC

It went bankrupt. The club didn't turn over enough money in the beginning to get over their higher cost base than VFL clubs, significant start-up costs and the $4m entry fee paid to the VFL.

Edit: I guess technically it didn't go bankrupt, but was bailed out by the WAFC.

The early days of WC wasn't all beer and skittles as many make out.

It wasn't so much that the WAFC went out and bought IPL, it more a case of IPL needed to be bought so the WAFC was formed.

You won't find the word success any where in Fremantle's vocabulary.

Which is understandable given that the very notion of success is a concept foreign to the Lavenders.

Funny this is mentioned, I noticed "Indian Pacific" on my invite to the Derby Lunch

When I googled the company, my computer crashed.........only jokes. There was limited info on the company.

They deal in fantasy, in their view, they are a club (in contrast to a franchise) because they have "club" in their name.

Maybe the should be called "The Successful Fremantle Football Club Premiership side Ltd" ....

Then they could attribute all those charachteristics to themselves because their name says so

Not entirely correct... currently the only difference is a Fremantle member can or may nominate themselves for the board, but is NOT elected by the other members. Even if the nomination is accepted by the Board, the WAFC can reject it.
