Weaver mock draft

Weaver I had also wondered if Carlton might go for a tall at #1 knowing they will still get either Hurn, Ellis or Murphy at #4. If the difference between best KPP and 2nd best is greater than the difference between best mid and 2nd/3rd best then it is a great tactic to ensure they get the best total outcome.
My only question is - do you think they might take Ryder at #1, he might suit them better?
Top 6 may be Ryder, Murphy, Kennedy, Hurn, Ellis and Clarke.

Or is this just wishful thinking because I want Kennedy at Hawthorn? :D

National champs. TAC cup guest matches. The Allies matches. The warm-up round-robin before the Championships which name escapes me. Rembering that most of the good Div 2 players will play one year underage and then back for a second year ... I get to see them 8-10 times or so.

Weaver, I only ask as you assessment of them seems mostly in agreeance for what i've seen (admittedly no more that what seem to have seen).

I like in your list how you've differentiated between a player's height and how tall they play. Look at someone like Leppitsch, or better examples Leo Barry and Glenn Archer - they play "above" their height through strength, reach, athleticism and/or footy smarts. People get too hung up on height as a measurement. Sure it's handy if you've got it.

A few of my fellow Lions have been calling for Wayde Mills to be taken with our #25 pick, whereas I think he'll go around 50-60.

Was your assessment of Ellliott made before or after injury. Played well in carnival, did quite well ( despite injury ) at camp. Held his spot in reserves SANFL throughout season carrying injury. Footydraft must see things differantly? Think he will suprise you come draft day ;)

That's OK - you just tell me the date of the story and I will be able to get it.

the West (1 Oct):
Thirteen of the AFL clubs have conceded they won't get an opportunity to draft East Fremantle ruckman Patrick Ryder, with Carlton, Collingwood or Hawthorn set to snap him up with one of the opening selections next month.

Ryder, 17, is one of the most talented young key position players in the country and the clubs are so sure that he will be one of the first young men selected that only Carlton, Collingwood and Hawthorn officials interviewed him at this week's draft camp in Canberra.

The Magpies, Blues and Hawks get a priority pick after failing to win 25 per cent of their home-and-away games. Combined with their round-one selections, they will have the first six picks in the November 26 draft.

"I'd been told by a lot of people that I'd go between five and 10 but the other clubs have told me that I'm going to be much closer to the top five," said Ryder, who gained All-Australian honours at this year's national under-18s championship.

"Only Collingwood, Carlton and Hawthorn spoke to me. The others all said I'd be gone ... it adds to the pressure because you have to really perform when you're so highly rated, but I'm looking forward to it."

Sharks teammate Josh Kennedy, who's 18, was also highly sought after, with only two teams with picks outside the top 10 formally interviewing him.

St Kilda and the Roos spoke with the All-Australian key forward but most clubs felt, like Ryder, he was too good to last beyond the top 10.

there was an article in the Sunday Times i read called draft diary where they were interviewing Josh Kennedy. cant remember which other clubs he mentioned but said he was interviewed by Collingwood and was disapointed Malthouse had to leave cause is a pies supporter.
Why the F did MM have to leave before or when interviewing a kid we should be looking at very closely??

Thanks Weaver, great work again.........

I'm hoping the Saints take the Lower brothers at #33 and #49 - and then a couple of talls with the last two picks/rookies...........

The other one I like Mathew Spangher should be gone by #33

great effort weave...

i think the blues will look towards murph first, seeing that the pies and hawks have a need for mids for 1st picks. That way kennedy or either ellis/hurn will still be available.

1, Murphy
2, Ellis
3, Hurn
4, Kennedy

Murph and kennedy is better than kennedy and hurn.

Great job Weaver!

Think you might be right on Carlton's strategy.

And just to add to the chorus that Essendon will almost certainly take a KP player with one of their first two picks. We need someone besides Lee as a tall in defence.

Not at all.
With his past lying posts, until he produces the article, he has now compounded his first lie with another one.
Lets see if he produces a link to the article.

It was in a Saturday paper, around the time of draft camp. At least 2 weeks ago, probably either 3 or 4 weeks ago in a Saturday West Australian. When/if you find it, feel free to post the whole article.

Alistair Clarkson has said that it's Ellis, and if he's gone, Kennedy at #3.

They will not draft Hurn, because he's too similar too Hodge, and doesn't give them pace in the midfield, while they still have a big need for KPPs.

I wouldn't trust any pre-draft talk. Last year Dermott said that Tambling would be a Hawk - he was even living at Buckenara's house. It could all be smoke and mirrors.

Who said Hawthorn will take a mid? We need talls also, who take longer to develop so they should be drafted first.
If I was Hawthorn i would take a tall at pick 3, and another at 6, there will be plenty of mids to choose from at 14, 18 and 22.
The only mid we MIGHT take at 3 would be Ellis. Certainly not Hurn. He would play a similar game to Hodge.
Although I cannot say for sure what Clarkson and Buckenara will do.

8. Beau Dowler – Richmond
Shapes as a mobile CHF in the Ash Hansen style. One who can push up to the wings and mark. Probably best set-shot in the draft so doesn’t need a heap of chances to kick goals. Lacks a little fire in the belly at times and can be hesitant to work the corridor and play in front. Ryder is the other contender but they took a ruckman / forward in Pattison last year and would like someone who covers more ground this year. Needs more gym time than most of the other top-tier bigmen but Richmond are in a re-tooling phase so won’t mind. Can also play CHB which will appeal to the Tigers who have veterans Kellaway and Gaspar to plan for.

24. Tom Rischbeith - Richmond
A clever KF or KD with leadership ability but at 190cm perhaps not quite tall enough to hold down a key role in the AFL. Has strong athletics background and has that prized quality of possessing both speed and stamina. Richmond are building a run-run-run gameplan and so will like the idea of a big bloke who can cover the turf. Might even develop as a Stenglein type midfielder. Needs to polish his skills. Known as a leader that also helps. Good courage, attacks the contest and has a good one-grab mark.

40. Matt Seal – Richmond
Probably looking to take KP players early and could therefore look for a midfielder late. Seal is a good solid performer who can play midfield or HFF and has a knack for kicking goals. Not the big-possesion standout that other midfielders might be but looks to have some potential and has held his own in senior WAFL company.

Weaver my man, I tip my hat to you. A true student of the draft and a guy willing to place his own thoughts rather than hearsay and innuendo.

Murphy not going number one is out of the norm for some, but I'm of the opinion his name only became the outright number one because of the Brisbane snub. I love the way Kennedy plays and has it in him to be the next Jonathan Brown at CHF. I think he is a better target man than CHB in my opinion.

I would love to comment on every pick but time and boredom for yourself will prevent that so being a Richmond supporter i'll comment on our picks.

8. Beau Dowler if the draft went in that order would be a great pick. If Hughes is there I'd rather him but Dowler has more upside and if he gets his second efforts right could be a dead set bargain at 8.

24. Tom Riechbieth is a good get I feel. He could play midfield judging by his draft camp results and to have him in the Centre Square with Coughlan and Tuck...WOW talk about tough big bodies!! Also could be a Aaron Hamill HF or Glenn Archer HB. His best quality is his attitude and leadership abilities which at a young team like Richmond would be a great assett.

40. Matt Seal is one I want at 40. Hope he falls to us, a classy player who I think at a higher grade will blossom and be a matchwinner. Again we lack some class in the team and that out and out match winner so he would be another asset.

If the draft falls that way for us I would be a happy camper. With Jay Schultz developing into I feel a great CHB the need for a tall back lessens some what. Young Thursfield and Moore are natural defenders so the need for more class and forward of the ball players comes into play and Dowler, Riechbieth and Seal addresses that.

Top effort Weaver, greatly admire your knowledge as you know!!

Murphy will go number1, without a doubt, and if the hawks take hurn carlton will take kennedy with 4, imo.

That is what Weaver is getting at. Taking Kennedy at 1 means your will have your pick of Murphy, Ellis or Hurn at 4.

It comes down to whether you want Kennedy and Hurn/ Ellis. Or Murphy and Hurn/Clarke/Dowler etc.

Obviously depends on how the blues recruitng staff rate Murphy and Hurn/ Ellis. If they dont think it is a massive difference, then getting Kennedy at 1 is the better option IMO. Unless you want to come out of the first 2 picks with mids.

Why do people keep saying Port Adelaide need a Ruckman? Brogan has a fair few years left in him and Lade's there till 2008. DeLuca and Willits as well. Maybe we could just rookie list a Ruckman as we did with French and Brogan?
