Hey Guys, I'm looking at buying a webcam so I can chat with my in-laws in Japan. Anyone know any good ones?

Also what software would be good to use it to chat with them?

Can't help with the Webcam itself, as the rare occasion I've used it I just used a Digital camcorder I had.

As for software, at the time I used iChat, which wouldn't be an option.

Best bet i think is to use MSN Live Messenger. Or yahoo messenger.

Logitech is an ok one.

At this point in time I would hazard a guess and say most webcams are now of a standard that its not what it can detect but where it sits etc

Does it have a clip on or does it need to be sat on a desk or square area, is the cord to heavy, can you adjust the foucus .

Microsoft VX1000 round 70 dollar mark
or
Vx 3000 i believe which moves with you.

Even Creative.

The More money you spend the better it will be. You can buy 30 buck ones, but they are crappy. Also depends on your internet connection.

Logitech make the best webcams. I did heaps of research before buying mine and ended up going with a Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 which I got off ebay OEM for a bout $60 which is half what you'd pay at harvey norman.

Ebay is actually really good for webcams and there are plenty of Australian based sellers offering OEM products so you don't have to worry about it coming from Asia.

If you have a Playstation 2 Eyetoy you can use that.
PM if you have one and need help installing it, it's a bit complicated to say the least!

Bought a Logitech cam this week.

However, once I installed it and rang via SKYPE, it appears they can see me but cant hear me?

Any idea on what the prob might be?

I did find the microphone function on my puta was muted ( its not anymore) could this make a difference when I loaded the drivers?

The mic self-tests ok via the webcam when I troubleshoot.

What else should I check? Help merch appreciated.

The MS one was on special at JB, its what I have. My partner uses it via msn to talk to her family back home.

I use a monitor mounted Logitech QuickCam® Vision Pro webcam.

It works well with Windows Live Messenger (MSN). I have never had trouble using my webcam with the aforementioned program when in a conference with family over seas.

Here is a quick overview provided by the Logitech company -

Performance

  • Carl Zeiss® optics: Get more detail and clarity from Carl Zeiss® optics. Logitech’s glass lens designed in collaboration with Carl Zeiss®, the global leader in camera optics.
  • Premium autofocus: Your images stay razor-sharp, even in close-ups.
  • HD video: Video calling and sharing has never looked so real at 960 by 720 pixels.
  • Higher megapixel performance: A true two-megapixel sensor. Up to eight-megapixel* photos (enhanced).
  • RightLight™2 Technology: Adjusts intelligently to produce the best possible images in dimly lighted or poorly backlighted settings.
  • Integrated microphone with RightSound™ Technology: Enjoy crystal clear conversations, free from echo** and annoying background noise.
  • Ultra-wide field of view and intelligent face tracking: Keeps you right in the middle of the action.

Convenience

  • Compatibility: Enjoy lifelike video on iChat or Skype – up to 30 FPS VGA quality. QuickCam Vision Pro also works with most leading instant messaging applications and delivers superior image quality compared to standard webcams.
  • Universal monitor clip: Mounts easily on any type of display or notebook computer.

I have been using video call on msn messenger (latest version) to talk to a friend overseas, but when they moved to a new apartment, lag got much worse and now we can't really talk. I think it's just something to do with her now having a shitter signal in her new room compared to her old room. Anyone got any ideas?

Wireless internet connection?

It could be their ISP (assuming their provider uses cable).

Their computer might be affected with spyware (so could yours). Best if you and your friend scan your/their computer.

Yeah i was thinking she must have a rather poor wireless signal now. My computer ain't infected with spyware, but don't know about hers. Her english isn't fluent so computer conversations will be difficult.:(

While we're on the topic, how much do you know about video calling in msn?

I know enough.

What do you need to know?
