Is there any chance that Webster would do the honourable thing and retire to allow Duffield a spot on the senior list?
I suppose with expensive contracts etc these days it won't happen. Nice thought though.

Webster is a good depth player who has gone through 3 knee recons. If we have to wait a year for the duff so be it.

Webster deserves his spot on the list and can't see anything "honourable" in the suggestion that he should retire. He is doing his best to be a player in 2006, and at the very least will add to the depth of the team.

As well as Duffield is playing, he is not in the main list, but is a certainty to come on when we have a long term injury (6 weeks), as we are sure to do.

Very pleased with how the club manipulated their list so that we still managed to recruit a the three new players, plus have Duffield on the rookie list. And he is worth it on there just for the goodwill it gives us with his family connections to the media....

Take your points Gauci and Gav - fair enough.

Kenny, can't agree with you sorry. Interested in who the 5 - 8 players are in your opinion. The mind boggles.

campbell, copping, dunn, ibbotson, warnock, warren

Granted all youngsters, but shows webster is by far the worst player on the list. Kenny would probably argue cook and mcmanus would slide in below him as well.

It wont happen, so in many ways this thread is pointless. But some the obvious ones.

McManus - cant dispose of the ball consistently - should be retired.
Cook - skilless - retired.
Schofield - pay the ********er out - retire him.
Copping - well is here still here in Perth - shoulda joined stribling last year.

I know a lot of you have the vision of Webster of yesteryear but after 3 knee recons. he is nowhere the same player. He is one dimensional and has the the turning circle of the queen mary. To suggets that he is better than duffield is laugable. I would love that Webster had reached his potential but with the hurdles he has had to face ,I cannot seen that much more improvement in his game. I was at the game on Friday and didn't see anything in Webster's game that impressed me. A heap of other players have moved ahead of him and duffy has to come on to out list by hook or by crook, the guy is a star and reminds me of Mckenna in the way that he plays.

As much as I am a fan of Webster, I can't help but agree - at the moment Duffield is a better player and I can't see that situation reversing again.

On the other hand, Webster is arguably as or more valuable than Haines, Browne, Schofield, McManus, Dunn on our list, so to suggest that he should just quit because he is the worst player is a bit unfair. Duffield will get his chance in due course.

Of the others mentioned Ibbotson, Copping, Warren and Warnock are all development players - Ibbotson is definitely ahead already IMO because he is a similar sort of player (skilled and tall) but with none of the injuries and is packed full with speed and agility. The other three are more valuable because they offer the club extra backup height.

My issue is with Scham's carp post about doing the "honourablle" thing. Better just to honour your contract.

I have no idea what the year holds for us, but I could imagine a few injuries to key players, and towrds the end of the year some of our hard older players being very useful.

Kasey Green comes to mind.

Webster is in the 36 or 37 who could possibly play this year. Webster for my mind will not make grade due to his knees and also that he bring the table doesnt inspire me. But he could get a game if we have a horror run of injuries, so I cant see how it could be justified too retire Webster for Druffield or any one else.

Druffied will be promoted at the end of year and maybe we should have promoted him before ? And delisted Webster or Haines then.

Correct me if I am wrong ,but doesn't it have to be a long term injury and not retirement for one of the rookies to gain a spot on the main list?
And why should Webbie do the "honourable!!!!!!" thing.
I don't think he is the worst of the players on our list.
I know of one who comes to mind immediately and his initials aren't L W.I think his last name starts with S.

If there is a free space (IE. less than 40 players) on the main list then a rookie can be automatically promoted at any time. We currently have all of our main list positions filled but a resignation from a player from that list would give you the space.

The other thing is salary cap; which I had understood was tight. If anyone "retires" they still get their contract paid in full which is included in the salary cap, plus whoever is promoted gets paid as a list player. It may actually be difficult to accomodate, plus if we then have a genuine long term injury we are shorthanded as we have retired a player.

Even if any of the boys do take early retirement it is the end of their football career in any way.Look at Winnie(Abrahams) and Matera.Neither were allowed to play after retiring.Winnie wanted to play with Perth and Matera at South but it was not possible.

Early days yet boys, there many a slip b'tween a cup and a lip and both may well get their shot before the seasons over. Bit harsh on Haines though, he is a very good footballer who like Webster has not had much of a chance to strutt his stuff due to a cruel run of injuries. Likewise for Browne.

We've got a few haven't we. Add to that mix guys like Haddril, Hayden, Thornton and Headland, and there are quite a few guys who have strugled and may continue to struggle to be at peak fitness during their careers.

I think duffield is a way better player then webster he has fotty smarts unlike webster

Yes we have had more than our fair share over the years, however this year we've got more on the park to choose from than I can ever remember.

In a competition where there's not much daylight between the top eight and the bottom eight, a healthy list counts for everything. A couple of early wins and a bit confidence under our belt and this shapes as potentially our most exciting season. However 22 games before the real stuff is a fairly taxing campaign and I would not be surprised to see the depth of our list significantly tested before the final assault.
