I could post this in a number of threads, but given Wright will be steering to ship, what are people's thoughts on what changes should be made?

From what I have seen, people are now aligning to point blame in a single direction, but still dancing around making their thoughts known on the changes

I'd go down this path, unless this side implodes on field prior to the bye

Back Voss in for the last year of his contract (not fazed if his moved on either). Clear out all assistants, refresh his support staff, but Power to join the assistants

Austin to be instructed to pivot, brutal calls to replace half of our mids and half of our small forwards with better speed, agility, kicking skills. The names would be debated heavily.

Also start picking off conditional players, many of which are in that one paced category

If Austin isn't trusted to undertake this strategy, move him on and target someone who can
This is pretty close to where I land too.

Lloyd first out, Wright (who understands the head of footy role well) to find a suitable replacement to oversee coaching, list management, recruiting, high performance.

On coaching, I’m neither here nor there on whether Voss’ contract for next year is honoured. Depends on how badly the year plays out. Regardless, need a massive clean out of the assistants. Start with Hamill and cut deep.

On the playing group, we need to find speed and skill and, given our salary cap situation, a few big calls are likely required to do this. Re-sign TDK. Move on mature heads that are either conditional or past it.

I would be doing similar, but with a few tweaks.

First step would be a solid internal review led by Wright/Cook into the footy department.

It's pretty obvious Lloyd will be moving on.

Voss should also be moved on around mid-season. Power as interim. Start putting in the work now to identify the next McRae/Mitchell/Kingsley. Wright is well placed to uncover our next great head coach and this should be his biggest priority. We need to get our ducks in a row and can't afford to waste another year with Voss as our head coach.

All assistant coaches moved on. I would consider retaining Power depending on the findings of the review and how he performs as the interim.

Austin retained, depending on review findings. Strategy moving forward needs to be pace, mongrel, skill, and footy IQ.

Harsh calls to be made on a number of senior players to free up list spots and cap room. Harry and TDK headline the outgoings:

1. Silvagni - TRADE - good honest player but we need to do better than that and move past sentiment. 3rd rounder.
3. Motlop - TRADE - just not good enough. Hopefully he still has some trade value. 3rd rounder.
10. McKay - TRADE - just don't think it's smart to keep players on your list that aren't in a rush to win flags. 1st rounder +
11. McGovern - DELIST - one of the worst contracts we've ever given out and that's saying something.
12. De Koning - TRADE - bit of a heartbreaker, but we will get a lot in exchange for him and we're better off finding a ruck on the merry-go-round that will give us similar production for half the price. 2 x 1st rounders +
14. Fantasia - DELIST - thanks but no thanks.
15. Docherty - RETIRE - I think it's time, but I could be persuaded into keeping him around for another year in a coaching/playing capacity ala Ed Curnow in 2022.
26. Haynes - RETIRE - thanks but no thanks.
31. Lemmey - DELIST - just isn't going to make it.
34. Monahan - DELIST - just isn't going to make it.
41. Duffy - DELIST - just isn't going to make it.
44. Evans - DELIST - thanks but no thanks.

That gives us roughly 12 list spots, notwithstanding any potential players we get as steak knives. We'd have roughly 3 firsts and 2 thirds to play with to give the list a refresh. I'd also be trading some of these picks into the 2026 draft so that we can get ahead of the Cody Walker points situation.
this isn't the draft to be cutting too deep

I want to talk Cook.

When Cook was hired, all the talk was finally we have the footy CEO.

He wont overpay for players (actual salary/ contract length)

He will fix the salary cap
He will guide the footy department.

All 3 of these are a total debacle at the end of his tenure.

Are we going to call this out, or continue with the narrative of ex WC ex Geelong, must be awesome.

I am bitterly disappointed by what his legacy is. People will point at the financials and membership. But if we are honest, Cain "from marketing" Liddle... was pretty strong on the commercials.

We got Cook for Footy leadership.

He has overseen Lloyd, Austin for 4 years now. Multiple reviews, ticked them off.

People need to look past his resume, and focus on what we wanted, and what we got out of him.

Disappointing...

There needs to be change, losing both is non logical.
TDK right now in our best three players.
Think we have a clear top 4 who all need to stay. I’d be interested to explore what could be done with Walsh and McKay as our 5th and 6th, think they could be like treloar and Grundy expendables for us if the season turns further south

Walsh yes. Back injury, looks like his potential is limited.

People wont like this, but Curnows, injury history and if we are honest, his longevity and durability needs to be questioned....supreme talent. But is it possible, we have seen his peak. He has had 2022 and 2023 injury uninterrupted.

He also has license not to chase and tackle. Maybe because of his injuries... Which for our team defense, forward pressure, is a problem in modern footy.

Id be shopping, Charlie.

Harry, frustating, but he is durable and flexible. If they properly train him as a releaving ruck, could do that role properly.

Also he does chase and tackle.

Part of our issue, is continuity and cohesion. Keep our best on the park together.

It needs to be thought about

Charlie kicked 57 last year before the injury, don’t lose faith on him just yet

I am sure we will see a better version of charlie throughout this year at some point.

Just like we will see some awesome Walsh performances.

But the discussion is about which chip you trade. We surely have to back in durability.

Even more so, if we need space to keep TDK.

Its a left of field thought, placing aside how much we all love charlie fit and in full flight

Wouldn't be replacing all of those outgoings with draftees. I'm sure I've missed a few, but here are some players I would be targeting to improve our best 22 with our picks and cap space:

Rucks:
  • Reilly O'Brien
  • Ned Moyle
  • Ned Reeves
Key defenders:
  • Leek Aleer
  • Jai Serong
  • Jordon Butts
Small defenders:
  • Brandon Starcevich
  • Kane Farrell
  • Dylan Williams
  • Josh Sinn
Mids:
  • Jacob Wehr
  • Xavier O'Halloran
  • Zak Butters
  • Luke Davies-Uniacke
Small forwards:
  • Malcolm Rosas
  • Sam Butler (depending on the medical report)

I reckon we hand him the keys asap. Whilst I think any chance of winning the flag this year is probably shot already, I think Wright can be influential in re-setting the standards this year at the club be successful sooner rather than later. He has seen what success looks like at two different clubs. He needs to have his say on who is the coach, football manager, list manager and captain because to be successful those 5 positions have to be 100% aligned. It may be that a couple of those blokes are already at the club. First domino is Football Manager and we know Lloyd is already out the door which is good so hopefully Wright has already started to look for his replacement. Once that person is appointed I think between Wright and whoever it is they can work out what to do with Voss and Austin. I have nothing ore than a feeling that Voss will stay and they’ll get new assistant coaches around him but I think Austin will be sacked. The interesting one will be Captain. Cripps is a warrior, a legend of the club but I think it might be good for him and the club to hand over the reigns to Weitering who is the natural successor. If we can get the right 5 people in those roles and they are aligned then we can get this back on track quicker than what it might appear is possible right now.

Sometimes you may not hold the whip hand
If TDK elects to leave and chase $ & highly doubt we would shop McKay, be interesting in his decision our likely position much lower than expected and the possible impact of this.

Emerging teams & our inability to evolve our game & other teams have the capacity to score heavily, lots of challenges for Wright.

If he leaves $$$ will have nothing to do with it

We need him to play up the ground like Jeremy Cameron. Takes a top defender but uses his tank instead of just wrestling like an idiot. He’s also our best field kick by a fair margin. Or gets a smaller more athletic defender and outmarks them.
God forbid, it might open up our forward line a little too. They can’t hang back if he can either hit a 45m bullet pass or put it through cleanly from 60.

The typical reactionary post with little logic.

Charlie would've got his 3rd Coleman in a row if it weren't for injury, the club mismanaged him severely.

I would be looking at trading Harry before him.

It's mental isn't it. I do think we might trade out a big name end of year, but it sure as hell wouldnt be Charlie Curnow.

Thank God Wright will be overseeing things around that time.

Lots of these players would be gettable without going the scorched earth method you posted earlier and quite a few wouldn’t command huge $$$ too.
At the moment i am all in on the coach not being up to scratch and responsible for the very unbalanced list but if we need a refresh, we can get Farrell and Starcevic if we clear out underperforming older players.

Strong, Butts Wehr, O’Halloran, Rosas all wont need much draft capital.

We might have our hand forced come trade time with TDK which will free up $$$ and a player like Aleer would be a solid pick up, if he continues to be overlooked then his value stagnates.

If we actually recruit players that would compliment our side, we can get improvement quickly without going scorched earth.

I didn't think what I proposed was scorched earth at all tbh. Maybe Silvagni I could persuaded into keeping around out of the changes I wanted.

We need to do something to shake up the culture within the playing list and make it clear to them know that mediocrity is no longer accepted. I think those 12 changes send a really clear message.

Trading Dekoning, McKay, Silvagni and Motlop in one go as well as 8 other delisting s and trades is pretty couched to me but its not too far off what might happen, its quite possible TDK moves on or we trade McKay if TDK stays, that in itself frees up picks and $$$$ for players, most of the other players you mentioned id be happy with.

I wouldn’t be moving SOS on or Motlop, for all his flaws Motlop gets more of the ball and kicks goals, something the other small forwards dont and SOS has something most dont, determination and all out effort.

Im not sure if Kemp was on your list but if not he should be, 4-5 years in to his career and he still doesnt have a position or makes an impact, Silvagni moves forward and makes him look stupid, im a big fan of Hewett but if we want to prioritise youth, energy and get a better midfield mix then I wouldn’t mind us letting him walk.
