The only thing wrong with the deal was the price we paid, getting good players through the door is great business, Saad has been great for us and we should have been challenging more whilst he’s been here.
Never forget who we were dealing with regarding the Saad trade, and the circumstances around the deal. Once the bombres were gifted pick 7 as compensation by the AFL for Daniher following the dodgy deal between them and the Lions, we were stuffed.

They then had picks 7 and 8 so Dodoro held all the cards if we wanted to split our 1st round pick (pick 9) and pay 'market value' for Saad. He openly stated he'd match/better any offer we made with another club who wanted to move up the draft order. We were gazumped by that flog.

The mistake that Austin made was showing his hand too early - although that may have actually come out of the Saad camp. In other words, don't announce anything re Saad until we'd negotiated a deal with another club to split our 1st round pick, and then start negotiations with Dodoro - you can only trade with what you've got.

I agree that we overpaid for Saad in hindsight based mainly on his age, but he's been bloody good for us.

No hindsight about it - we overpaid for Saad at the time period. Regardless of how good he’s been or was.

Putting McKay up for trade might made some sense to rebalance the list

Voss needs a few wins to keep his job
Sorry MrX. but trading McKay makes absolutely no sense, we have what every other club is craving for, KEY FORWARDS, create a more modern system while list wise adding a couple of damaging forwards midfielders defenders through trade and recruiting, smart decisions with game plan and trades/recruiting can turn it around in keeping on contending..

So the question for Graeme Wright is perhaps a different one to the question for Austin:

Which player on a ‘high salary’ is a true match-winner now?

Cripps
Walsh
Curnow
McKay
Weitering
Williams
Saad
McGovern
TDK

Match winners are..

Cripps
Mackay
Charlie
Tdk

Cripps isnt going anywhere. That’s pretty close to certainty.

Tdk is an obvious possibility

That leaves Charlie and H

The question is ..

A. are we better off with 2 high salary key forwards ?

Or

B. Keep one and turn the other into an elite small forward or a dynamic midfielder ?

In tge modern game I believe B makes us better overall.

GW values small forwards based on his work at filth and hawks so I think option B is definitely a possibility.

Every club would kill for H and Charlie
We just need to learn how to F kick it to em
Voss should go before them ffs
This is beyond a joke

Yeah they would and I think that is sort of why it makes it difficult for us to keep both when most clubs struggle to have 1?

If we can keep both and also improve the list in key areas like small forward, midfielder and a HB then absolutely we keep both. But will the SC allow us this luxury?

How many teams have 2 x high salary key forwards?

I don’t think there are any apart from us?

Filth have mcstay and myercheck
Lions have hipwood and archee/rainer
Tiggies had lynch and ?
Dees have fritgch and ?
Doggies have Naughton and a young Darcy ?

AG - Brisbane won the premiership with Hipwood and Daniher.
Filth are running three keys now and won with Cox, Micheck.
Tigers won premierships with Riewoldt and Lynch.
Geelong won with Hawkins and Cameron
Doggies have 3.

I could keep going but seriously let’s not make up stories…..

Cats and tiggies yes but not the others.

Also cats and tiggies had a very well balanced list that suited their game styles.

Also note cats are under investigation re SC breaches?

Is our list balanced?

Note: I’m not wanting to move Charlie or H or any of our players because they’re no good, it’s more how we manage tge SC and filling in other areas of need.

for example how do we fix/improve in the small forward, midfield and perhaps a HB areas?

Yep. I'll take structure and team work over so called Match Winners every day.

I hold a different view regarding trading, I know there’s egos and a big song and dance made about sending players to the drafts and redrafting them but it’s BS.

I don’t see any AFL boss sending Saad to the draft and getting nothing, instead of taking say pick 15, sane goes for Cerra, offering a 3rd round pick on top was a joke, Fremantle weren’t going risk losing Cerra for nothing over that extra pick.

There hasn’t been many instances of clubs willing to lose a player for nothing and the ones I can think of weren’t clubs willing to lose a 1st rounder.

He’s got good currency, could get a decent player and pick for him

Will force gameplan change

I get what you’re saying but i see things differently…

Loosing Harry actually weakens our team/list, we can use the TDK compensation to acquire a player of need…

Your point about game plan change can be made by the coaching staff, if not the current lot then certainly by a new lot with the required skills knowledge methods in developing the right systems..

Plenty of clubs throughout the league have multiple KF’s which are utilized far better within their respective systems…

Trade McKay and all the talk will be about how we need a second key forward, a forward/ruck. It's not a smart trade.

Nearly all the premiers in recent memory have at least 2 strong marking targets.

Our weakness is pace, kicking skills and coaching.

Imagine how bad we will get when we start taking away out strengths!

Start trading our core and bottom 4 followed by 10-7 year rebuild starts and Carlton history repeats.

Patience is the only way. That has been the Collingwood and Geelong way and it's resulted in regular premierships.

There is no way in hell Geelong or Collingwood would trade away someone like McKay simply for picks. It only happens if they are absolutely forced to and we should take note.

If we have to let a big name go, it most likely is DeKoning and that is simply because we are forced to.

Agreed. All clubs would drool at the chance to have a forward 50 with Curnow and McKay in it. It is a luxury that we have but we do not use it well at all.

Add to that we have a generational fullback, and a Brownlow medalist in the middle together with one of the most promising young rucks in the game. Our spine should be premiership material.

If we can't build a team around that with competent well coached role players, and a competent coaching group with a modern game plan we should pack it up.

We have squandered a great opportunity unfortunately. However, we still do have a bit of time to turn it around with this core group, but we need to start getting it right from here. Losing any of Weitering, Curnow, or McKay would be a disaster. Losing TDK is bad enough, but at the same time it is not smart to pay him what St. Kilda is going to. If we can use that cap space to fill out with good role players (ie small forward and a quick midfielder) it can turn into a win for us.

We need to fix our coaching group too, to resemble some sort of modern gameplan tactics and standards. The win the clearance and then bomb it long down the line stuff is getting real old, and all the good teams have worked us out. We are not going anywhere till we are coached properly.

It’s not really that simple though. The reason why Geelong wouldn’t trade away a key piece like that is, they dont allow themselves to be stuck financially.

We have Curnow, Harry, Cripps, Weitering, Walsh and TDK all on really decent deals, the fist 4 especially.

Jeremy Cameron’s deal to cross from GWS was $900,000 over 5 years, not huge and then who? Smith who they have just added. They would never trade Harry but they also wouldn’t be paying the big $$$$ either.

I know its just zerohanger but this article suggests Cameron is the only player the Ctas have in the top 80 paid last season.

It’s pretty clear to me, the reason we are an average/underachieving team, comes down to one of three options.
  1. List Management - the list isn’t good enough.
  2. Coaching - the coaching group isn’t good enough.
  3. Both
Is Wright good enough to identify the problems and will Wright/the board, be brave enough to make the tough calls.

If nothing changes, we don’t get the right people in the right roles, then next year is likely to be the same old past 25 years.

Wright is regarded an outstanding recruiter and respected football operator.
Precisely our areas of deficiencies, really got the fingers crossed he meets expectations and eventually is our ticket out of the mire we’ve been stuck in for last few decades. He should have been handed the reins much earlier.
