Wellman on SEN

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Weather:
- Train earlier in the mornings, cope with the heat.
- Players happier today than Monday.

'Exciting Times':
- No shortage of talent on the list.
- Players settling/training well, expecting improvement from Jurrah/Watts too.
- Focus on physical development.

Camps:
- Kelly O'Donnell's concept for 1st/2nd Year Players, Boxing/Pier Jumping trip down in Beamer territory, Warnambool (again in mid-season)
- Mt. Buller, getting to know teammates, bonding etc.

Bailey / Contract Article:
- About teaching/developing players. Has been terrific etc.
- 'Good show of faith' to offer him a new contract, board has seen development/improvement. 'Well deserved'.

No. of wins in '08:
- "I'd like 22"
- Public wants to know how many we expect to win, but in the club it isn't being discussed. Concentrate on improvement and we should win more than last year.

Commitment of Davey to sign long deal:
- Really important, made huge improvements last year but has really developed off the field, leadership group etc.
- Davey to thank for the improvement of Jurrah, Jetta, Bennell.
- Great reward for Aaron. Last half of career will be better than the first half.
- Jurrah/Wonna look up at Aaron and how he got there, inspiration for them. Ditto McLeod/Long. Their careers inspire the younger aboriginals.

Jack Watts:
- Has made progress over the summer, work in progress. Big step-up from school footy, training day-in, day-out.
- Can focus on footy now.
- Particularly made progress over the break when others were on holidays, made up lost time on the rest of the group.
- Has only ever played 5/6 games against men. Needs to be given time to develop (at the right speed).
- High draft picks need to make mistakes before they can learn. They can be told, but the best experience is to make mistakes and learn from them.

Membership:
- 19,000+
- Can sense the optimism around the club. Great motivator seeing themselves improve.
- The players know clubs can turn it around quickly (Hawthorn as an example). Crawford went from being a senior player in a young team to a premiership player in a short space of time.

1300 DEMONS for Membership.

Well done BC, Wellman is very impressive, having spoken to him a few times out at Casey (when the only senior coaches attending were he & Bail's) he seems to be the right hand man of Bail's & is a smart operator in the football sense, we should make sure we lock him away with his contract aswell...

We've got a pretty young coaching staff.

Mahoney, West and Wellman have just 1/2 years under their belts. Mark Williams has had longer in the game as a coach, but his AFL experience is not that extensive either.

I was just thinking about this last night actually. I wonder which player will replace Whelan to work along side Beamer in the boxing stakes. Miller perhaps?

Jones mentions his boxing sessions a fair bit on twitter.

Could be another option.

Nothing about Scully or Trengove specifically, only that as a whole the new recruits were settling in well.

I think thats a very good thing too. The less individual focus on those two in their first few seasons the better. Let them develop without unnecessary attention.

Thanks for the run down BC.

Pity that Watts doesn't get treated the same way.

I know- and just to prove ur point ;)

MELBOURNE is hopeful Jack Watts will play in round one but says the emerging key forward will determine his own availability.
Watts, the No.1 pick in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, had a delayed start to pre-season training because of illness and is now entering a full program after making considerable ground over the Christmas and New Year break.
Assistant coach Mark Williams said it was unclear if Watts, who has worked hard in the gym to add size to his developing frame, would be considered for the Demons' NAB Cup opener against Fremantle on February 21.
"We're hoping he can keep improving his body and his fitness and his knowledge of what we require him to do," Williams told melbournefc.com.au.

As the defensive coach, Wellman has done extremely well.

He hasn't had pick 1,2 to develop guns but the defensive half is probably one of the strongest areas MFC have now and into the future.

Warnock rookie. is an extraordinary turn around. He's one of the safest big man stoppers.

Frawley Pick 12. First round pick but still needed development in mind/body and he has.
Garland Pick Mid Forties. Struggled up forward and shifted back and showed Excellent 08 form. Beat Franklin and Riewodlt when they were in full flight and beat small forwards too.
Rivers. Pick 27ish. B4 Wellman's time.
Martin. PSD. Looked very good in defense. Still looks the best in the back half.

i'd like a change in the ring with beamer... thanks for the info BC

I'm sure Beamer doesn't mind giving it to a few in the ring in the 'Bool over that weekened... Maybe you can get in line ;)

Excellent summation- and I agree Welman seems to have had a positive impact on the backline without a doubt. Gone from a perennial weakness into arguably our strongest asset!

I heard him myself say that Kelly O'Donnell was the man behind the trip for the younger players to go the the Bool mid season. I thought and still believe it was Beamer who originally arranged the draftees to go down to his parents place mid year and arranged former boxing coach Ryan to take them through some drills.
