Essendon
Raging speculation that Hird will coach Essendon gathered force today when one of his closest friends and 2000 premiership team mate Sean Wellman stunned Melbourne with his resignation.

Wellman, 36, had agreed to a one-year extension as the Demons back-line coach early this month after it appeared Hird was out of the running to take a first coaching appointment to attempt a desperate resurrection of his old club.

Was about to say "I wonder where hes going" but your post makes it clear.

To post on this board you must admit that is Ryder no god & submit to the rule of our triune leader Sculgrotts.

;)

ah well, surely we can find a suitable replacement, although our backline has improved significantly (not sure if wellman deserves credit for that)

All hail Sculgrotts

I, for one, welcome my new triune overlord.

The funny thing is I just found the perfect pic for that quote the other day. For another reason.

Seemed to be good at what he does (had some great talent to work with though).

Not sure about Essendon going with Hird either; I thought for sure they need someone with experience (Choco) for now. Hird as assistant under him for a few years ala Buckley would have been a far better choice for mine.

Still one of their greatest episodes.

I'm wary because he's untried, but then again it's James Hird. The club will put in place a top notch coaching panel to make it as smooth as possible, with Choco probably being one of them.

Disappointing actually - I think he was pretty well regarded at Melbourne.

Essendons decision on Hird aside, Im surprised Wellman went - I reckon the Bombers are going to struggle for a few years.

Must have been a bit of money thrown at him.

Still remember my "Vote RIG" for mod campaign using that image. Good times.

You can never really tell with assistants can you? All the essendon fans were happy when Dean Wallis left when Knights took-over - everyone thought he was shit. But now he's leaving Freo and some fans are saying we should hire him again - he's done a good job at Freo it seems! It's bizarre.

Traitor. Oh well, let's see how the essendon 'boys' do.

Disappointing we've lost a few well-regarded coaches in recent years (Ratten, Riley, Wellman).

Need a decent replacement here. When's the last time we've managed to poach a coach from elsewhere?

We should be having a crack at trying to entice someone like Simon Goodwin. He has been heavily linked to Essendon, but if you don't ask you will never know. Other assistant coaches who may also be worth considering are Alan Richardson, Brett Montgomery, Todd Viney, Craig McRae, Max Hudghton. (Not sure whether the current assistant coaches are still contracted or not)The other option would be to sound out recently retired players that include: Brett Kirk, Warren Tredrea, Tyson Edwards to see if they have any desire to be assistant coaches.

Damn. Got to be honest guys, he's done a better job then you gove him credit. Remember Frawley pre-2009? He looked like a nothing player.

Anyway, I saw Steve Silvagni the other day as an assistant for St Kilda, wondered for a split second whether it would be worth-while for Melbourne to poach him until I remembered Wellman.

Wellman is gone three days later so WATCH THIS SPACE

Wasn't SOS heading to GWS?

I'd say Wellman has done a really good job moulding our defensive unit, I'm sure his lost won't be felt hard though now that the guys have some more experience.

Laidley would be a pretty handy defensive coach at this point.

Viney and Richardson also come to mind.

I know he's untried but is it possible to see if Wheels wants to return? He could be a good coach, he did the boxing camp with Beamer and his tackling and toughness would be a great addition to our backline, but I don't know how good he is at coaching and whether he could coach the other stuff the backline needs to know. Wouldn't mind looking at Montgomery, but definately not McRae.

Rickypetterd15 james frawley is fuming about wellmans departure!

That was from twitter a minute ago, the players arent happy

Was that directed at me cause i'm confused. Didn't say anything about Wellman being a bad coach or anything ???
