They had a few shots on goal that luckily missed, Jenny - the impression might have been different at the game though.

From half way through that first quarter, I never doubted we'd win. Our body language and attack on the ball was far superior. Not often I feel like that when we play! :D

And yes, just watched the replay and he did play further up the ground than I originally thought. It's funny how you miss so much when you are actually at the game! So apologies there.

Having said that, I did make my opening comment with the pre-cursor that I wouldn't want to be without Welsh in the side, I do still believe he hasn't been as hard a player as he USED to be - where he was like a dog with a bone in the forward line and made it extremely hard for the opposition to get the ball out, he doesn't do that any more (or certainly not nearly as much as he used to) and I am almost always left feeling that the bags of goals he gets (when he gets them) are not hard earned.

Exactly spot on.

Bocks overall game was better than Welsh.

No, Bocks scoring generally came from idiotic defense such two defenders misjudging the ball and jumping out of the contest him finding space and good passes finding him.
Welsh had just as many marks and was robbed of another goal shot from some touched decision from one of Ricciutos kicks which I'm still wondering how it was touched, a contested mark mind still managed 5.1 Welsh played the better game same marking tally and with that one paid would of been 10.
If anything Kangaroos became more defensive late and played better created more scoring opportunities Welsh presented very well.
The guy needs to tackle more though Bock laid a couple and Jericho.

Those judging Welsh purely on goal outputs are not understanding of the different roles he plays from quarter to quarter.

Welshy played more as a deep forward in the last quarter and kicked 4. Early on in the game he was playing Perrie role of a lead up forward. I think he has been pretty good for us in the last 2-3 weeks.

The thing is Stiffy... even if you judge him JUST on goal outputs he is still not that far off some of the leagues star forwards.

He's not getting the credit I believe he should and some comments on this thread show that.

Here's an interesting Welsh statistic (updated from the figure quoted by ChTeen on Saturday night).

Welsh has kicked 29 goals so far this season.

He's played in all 7 of Adelaide's wins, kicking 27 goals in these games.
He's played in 3 of our 4 losses (missed the Freo game), kicking only 2 goals in total for these games.

Make of that what you will.

Welshy has long been underappreciated on this board so its no news. His main problem is his body that always seems to let him down. Granted he can run hot and cold at times but people need to realise that each week he is fighting out of his height and weight division by getting oppositions best defender yet he still manages to kick a goal or two. Just about the only genuine match winner in that forward line ATM.

I wonder what sort of player Welsh would have been had he stay at Kangaroos and played next to Carey, McKernan et al. He would have been a great player there where he would have had a LOT more freedon than here.

Unfortunately he has been the focal point of our forwards line for years and considering the circumstances he has done fine job. Some people at the AFC rate him as the most naturally gifted and skilled player on our list.

That pretty much tells us what we all know. When Welshy fires we win. It also tells us that we rely on him heavily to kick a winning score.

I rate scotty highly definately one of my favourites and will always forgive him for a mistake!!

he's 9 goals off the top goal scorer in the AFL That's pretty damn good considering the people above him!! and he's pretty accurate if he marks and takes a set shot 90% of the time it's a goal he gets his points from playing on and crumbs that don't quite go right! He's very valuble to us!

seems we rely on him a lot.

I asked a while back (and no one could answer, because I'm not sure there is one) the difference between a key factor & a downhill skier.

when player X plays well we win, when he doesn't we don't. is he a major contributor or a downhill skier?

now the same clowns will chant skier at welsh, but I'd be more circumspect. looking at the state of our forward line, he is our most dangerous, clinical goal scorer. if he's not scoring a few...

It's suggests those calling for him to be dropped want us to lose more games than we win.
