What do we lack in our squad to be a premiership force?
- min 2 AA midf;
- 2 crumbing forwards;
- leaders currently in 24-27 age group to help develop our youngsters;

Thoughts?

A fev/buddy type of talent up forward and a crumbing forward - we have neither.

Having said that we have made it to two prelims without either so I still have high hopes for 2009.

yep i agree about a couple AA/elite mids, the other bit is what fryingpan said, a half forward that can kick goals and link up play. Tippett and walker can be the deep forwards hopefully. A crumber would be nice but not essential, you can get by with rotating mids.

If we were to win the premiership this year, this is what would need to happen in my opinion.

  • Tippett doubles his goal tally from last year.

  • Walker steps up to kick 35 goals

  • Van Berlo and Vince play consistently at the level they showed they could reach last year

  • Gallman or Kite plays solid enough to offset the loss of Bassett

  • Johncock back to his best

  • And of course no injuries.

Bateman/Mitchell/Hodge Rioli/Williams

Bateman - NO
Mitchell - NO
Hodge - Defender who pinch hits in the middle sometimes

Rioli - Yes
Williams - Not a crumber and definitely not much more than a cog in the system

Well we haven't exactly had lady luck on our side in years gone betterthanu, so maybe it's our year this year.

'Xactly! I'll say it again - 2005/2006, if not for horrendous injury list and one spinning-eyed Cousins, at least one of these should have been a flag.

Bateman and Mitchell are AA midfs no doubt.

If you qualify that with AA "quality" midfielders, then maybe you have a point. But then I would counter that by saying with time, VB, Vince, Porplyzia, Mackay amongst possible others could be given that label as well.

i reckon you lack a strong big marking forward that can kick you 70 80 goals a season...

mcgregor doesn't count nor does goodwin tippet or moran and i don't know why jericho got delisted he looked alright

You must have seen Jericho at the G versus Richmond last year. If he played like that for even 2 weeks in a row (not that he was given huge opportunity) he would have had more chances. But no, he really didn't look alright most of the time.

Mcgregor retired. Jericho played a couple of good games, but other than that was ordinary. Your other points are correct, but we are shaping to have a very flexible and potent forward line within 2 years. We may have two or three 40 goal forwards rather than one that does all the work. That is a much better option as the Hawks have shown with their 3-pronged attack.

A Plan B would be nice.

Our defense holds up pretty well year after year, however once our attack is shut down, we lack a plan B to work around it.

It bugs me too that the Vic commentators call us Crowbots! Although are they actually closer to the truth? Well drilled and disciplined are great qualities, however to win a flag we have to find a bit of the Jarman x-factor and plan B.

We lack gun midfielders in the 100-250 game bracket.

To win the premiership this year: (1) Reilly and Thompson step up to have AA-quality or better seasons, (2) Edwards, McLeod and Goodwin are able to contribute, especially in finals, and (3) our defence holds together.

To win the premiership down the track: our young mids mature the way we all hope, D-Mack wins the Brownlow, and Rutten and Bock stay healthy.

Well that's good, resting our premiership hopes on a kid who's never played an AFL game in his life.....
