I agree Backman and Ruck like everyone. There is nothing at all wrong with having 2-3 dominate ruckman!!

There is if the only place they can play is in the ruck, like Blake. King has tried for years to be a goalkicker but has failed.
Luckily Ottens can go forward with good results...

The best available wont be anywhere as clear cut by the time we get to choose. While we, like every team, can improve our stocks, its unlikely that there will be any really decent picks available that will be able to walk into the side barring a major run of injuries. Already we have players like Prismall and Djerkurra who would probably be in any other teams starting 22. If we end up with more players like that, then we could be struggling to hold on to them when they get frustrated at lack of opportunities.

If we have a choice between a pretty solid reliable choice who may not have the greater upside potential and a riskier choice with greater upside potential, we may be better off going the latter.

Just to emphasise what Jim has contributed , after watching the U18 VMet V WA game, even the top10 this year is anything but clearcut

Cotchin , one can see similarities between him and previous early picks like Gibbs and Deludio but he wasn’t at his best in this game. In fact he was poor. While other another kid called Rhys Palmer killed it kicking 5 and was a real live wire.Kreuzer did well in side towelled up but the kid against him was a real athlete Naitanui who is too young this year had a real leap at the Centre bounces. Addam Maric is a super small forward who although small is dangerous in the style of a Farmer/Medhurst , he doesn’t need a lot of ball to have a score board effect as he is accurate kick.

But the kid who really took my eye was Cale Morton. Just like the Selwoods , this footy family has a good chance to have three brothers at three clubs , and frankly , just like Joel , I wouldn’t mind the third brother at Catland. Taller than his brothers , he is nice height for a tall , has good hands and a body that you could really grow in to. If we are looking for a tall that could play back and forward he’s a player that could fit the bill.

In years like this the talent seems very even and it takes a very talented observer to pick the right kid. Hopefully this will favour us with Welles showing he can have success with late picks

Just to throw an idea out there, but i'm not really convinced myself.

Should we go for Byron Pickett?

The time is now for the cats, and i reckon if we don't go all the way this year, then a player like byron would bring some great finals experience to the side. He has been there on the last day of september, and no-one else on our list has exept cam mooney. We do allready have good small/mid sized forward in jonno, chappy, varcoe, stokes etc. but none of them have done what byron has.

It will also depend on his form for the rest of the year. He may well be finished......

Thoughts??????????

Pickett has been finished for 2-3 years.
We need to draft young talent to replenish our list for the inevitable de-listing of some dead wood such as Playfair,Spencer and Gardiner.

young talent will take 2-3 years to develop, and by then our shot at a flag could be over.

You forget that players such as Hawkins,Gamble,Prismall,Djurrkura,Grima are all able to step up and will be playing senior football in the next year or 2.
Their is also the natural improvement in players such as Selwood,N.Ablett,Varcoe,Mackie etc...
Pickett is not an option.

I'm not forgetting that at all, but last time I checked none of those blokes have played in a grand final.

So what? You think that Byron Pickett is going to make the difference between us winning and losing a GF? Actually, he might, but not in the way you are thinking ...

How many Kangaroos players had played in a GF in 1996?
How many Adelaide players in 1997?
How many Brisbane players in 2001?
How many Port players in 2004 (against a side full of triple premiership players)?
How many Sydney players in 2005?
