First of all, apologies for taking a more rational view of this whole Campbell Brown traded saga, but I have to ask the question...what if?
- The trade never happens?
- Despite Brown being traded, our backline manages to hold strong without him. Our backline consisting of Gilham, Gibson, Guerra, Ladson, Birchall, Schoenmakers, Ellis, Whitecross, and Croad (maybe) turns out to be enough?
- Burgoyne turns out to be a star. Free of the weekly tag, and with hard nuts like Hodge, Mitchell, Sewell and Lewis getting the ball out to him he takes his game to a whole new level. Burgoyne, in essence, turns out to be the game breaker in the midfield we need.
- Hodge and Mitchell are freed up to play more footy through the midfield. Lets not forget we all whinged when Hodge played the QB role for the first half of the season when we needed him in the midfield. And Mitch spent some time their too. Burgoyne can play across half back too, and would give us more flexibility through the middle of the ground.
- The current group of leaders we have are in fact "the heart and soul of the club". The playing group does end up missing Browny, but ultimately we have a core group of leaders that inspire in their own way. Hodge, Mitchell, Sewell, Roughead, and Bateman all provide the inspiration the club needs to push through this harsh piece of modern football trading.
- Ultimately, Burgoyne's skill and class is the difference between us winning or not winning another premiership with this group.
So if all this happens, will those same people that are "burning their memberships" and calling the club "pathetic", "a disgrace", and "no longer a family club" - will they turn around in 2011 and renew their memberships because things actually are OK?
Now is not the time to lose faith in the club. I love Browny as much as the next Hawthorn supporter, but this is football...it happens. It's all well and good to say you stuck around during the hard years when Hawthorn struggled to perform and that therefore makes you "a true Hawthorn supporter". If you jump off now though, you're just as bad as those jumped off in the early 2000's.
Clarkson and co have already taken us to one premiership, lets have some faith in them to do it again.
