What is an Emo?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

To solve an argument between a few of my mates and I (we are all between 35 and 40)........

What exactly is an emo and how long have they been around?

How do they differ from Goths?

What/Who are emo bands/artists?

Do goths still exist?

Keep hearing about them but cannot get a definitive answer?

Any help would be appreciated.

An emo basically refers to an "overly EMOtional" person. Hence the name emo. Emotions referring to sadness. Like being glum, quiet, introverted and sometimes suicidal.

They generally dress in black. hair over one side of face to covering one eye. Don't remember the reason for that. Almost always stereotypically white. Pale white people. The music is indie rock blended with popular culture music.

Basically speaking. Emo's are sad pathetic people who walk around like they run the place. They have some stupid points system on how ranking an emo u can be. Like if u slit ur wrists, or cut yourself you get a lot of points. Bunch of w***ers and they should be systematically wiped out.
Goths still exist yes. Plenty of em. Especially in the melbourne CBD

I think you are mixing up your goths and emos. Emos seem to be taking over the CBD. Particularly Flinders St steps. I also wouldn't necessarily say that emos are pale...not like goths. Not as big on the makeup, I don't think.

Goth music >>>>>>>>>>>>>> emo music. The Cure and Depeche Mode, for example.

Emos are a lot whinier, and emo music doesn't do it anywhere near as cool as goth music. Which I think tends to be a lot more artistic.

Do you understand how many of these threads there have been. Emo is short for emotional. If you want to be happy watch summer heights high people. Go to media and entertainment and see the thread there. The show is hilarious. Back to the topic, ive noticed there are alot of them now.

They're not all as extreme as wanting to kill themselves but they think they have bigger problems than they actually do. They are often just very cynical about life.

The music is stuff like Taking Back Sunday, Saves The Day, Jimmy Eat World, At The Drive In, Thursday, Dashboard Confessional, From First To Last (Screamo), Thrice etc. Screamo is pretty much any emo types that scream perhaps like From First To Last. The theme in the music is either crap like "my girlfirend broke up with me, I hate the world" or "Darkness consumes me, the rapture emerges, I am the owl of pain!" (diluted metal-esque themes but more whingey).

Mainstream bands like Simple Plan, My Chemical Romance, AFI are probably incorrectly called emo as they are whiny, emo-esque bands but aren't a true representation of the genre.

I would never, especially given your description of emo, have put ATDI in that list.

Who ever they are I think it's the duty of the rest of us to wipe them out. Premeptive strike. Do emo's have WMD's?

This is what I hate about the "emo" brand. pretty much every genre of music has songs like this. The 90% of music written derives from the writers emotions toward something. The only music that doesn't is songs with no point (ie: My Humps).

But you don't see people calling The Beatles "emo" because they wrote Yesterday, do you?

Sounds like they would have got the sh*t kicked out of them when we were young???

They probably were, and in some sort of internalised self-righteous way, are quite proud of the fact. It gives them some sort of nobility, to have had such pain.

Obviously not an emo band, but I did like Mclusky's album title My Pain And Sadness Is More Sad And Painful Than Yours Is. That basically sums up the emo view of the world.

At The Drive-In were most definitely emo.

Of course bands can be put into many genre's as it's a subjective thing that is hard to define. In their case you could argue they are post-hardcore or emo-core (hardcore emo).

Emo can really be used in 2 contexts; as a fashion style such as the picture posted earlier in the thread, and as a music style including emotional performances and/or lyrics.

At the drive in were emo before it actually became a "trend" so to speak.
If only the emo bands of today were like them instead of the crap they dish up

I like At the Drive In but you treat the word 'emo' as if it's some disease. Just like 'pop' doesn't mean it is a crap boy band like Westlife, Human Nature, it can also be good artists like the Beatles, Police etc.

Sunny Day Real Estate are another good emo band (hear the song "In Circles" - about 10+ years old but probably a classic of the genre). The 'emo' you see on MTV is probably not representative of the genre, it's just a stupid buzzword that society has caught onto. You wouldn't call Akon rap either, or Hinder rock.

wtf dude?

What emo bands will ever contest on the same level as either of the bands mentioned?

EMO Is like YOYO - It's a Fad with a bunch of kids running around pretending they r angry@ the world in such a way that only they can understand ....and when the shit hits the fan they move home to their parents

The music is stuff like Taking Back Sunday, Saves The Day, Jimmy Eat World,

I always get confuzzled as to what makes Jimmy Eat World emo. A lot of their songs are energetic and upbeat

And another thing that seperates em from most emo music is that they're good

An emo is an eskimo without skis
