what is the most annoying phrase in the AFL?

"For mine" (pretentious sounding wank)

"Nothing doing" (another eye rolling masterstroke of words)

"They've lowered their colours" (i find that one especially annoying/lame)

I despise "shorts it" for a short pass. Is it even grammatically possible to use shorts as a verb? What I hate most is I only ever heard Dwayne Russel use it but now even good commentators like Anthony Hudson sometimes say it

Just OOI, what do they think it means?
I think it gets used to describe players who look lazy or unhurried. There is a "laconic cowboy" trope in Hollywood where the archetypical hero doesn't say much (which is somewhat laconic) and acts in a relaxed and unhurried way before shooting the baddie (which is what has become associated with laconism as a result of Hollywood).

Laconia was of course the district corresponding to the poleis of Sparta, and Spartan speech was famously abrupt.

FWIW the Spartans were late for the battle of Marathon (because of the Carneia, a sort of grape based chasey ritual: this excuse that was trotted out more than once) but mostly they were known for blunt brief speech and being the best hoplites man for man in Hellas.
