This one is up there but...

what has been the No.1???

I probably should have been less specific. Also consider VFL, SANFL, etc etc.

Freo's original uniforms and theme song being approved by the AFL.
:D :D
You'd have to put in the 79 grand final incident. When Harmes knocked the ball to sheldon allowing him to score the goal which buried the pies.

Did the ball go out of bounds before harmes got to it, seems like it might have IMHO. Pies had to wait another 11 years to win the flag.

Matthews and Bruns for an onfield action resulting in assault charges.
Major precedent set encouraging victims in lesser leagues to pursue actions against other players.

Wayne Carey cheating on wife and team mates
I'd say that is up there but its only so contoversial because he's one of the greatest players of the modern era.

Has there ever been an AFL/VFL listed player who was trialed for murder whilst still playing?

Buckley, but it graded down to manslaughter/culpible driving.

Most controversial would probably still be barrassi leaving melbourne, one of , if not the first really major player to change camps and usher in a new era of player trading. Huge effect on the game and on supporter loyalties.

Helen D'Amico's '82 Grand Final streak would have to be up there.

Hey Dart. don't you remember one off season he shaved it for charity. Would have been 86 or 87.

Sorry have no pics.

The "bloodbath" grand final of 1945 surely warrants a mention?

Or what about in the early 1900s when it was found that Carlton players were paid to play like crap and were suspended for something like 5 years?

Was there any controversy when the Swans relocated to Sydney? I imagine that could've been quite controversial at the time, although I wasn't around and don't know the situation.
