He did some brilliant things, but at the end of the day, those 6 behinds were essentially 6 turnovers, which would negate so many of his great acts.
Nah, those 6 behinds equal a goal, plus allowing the opportunity to intercept in the fwd half. He had massive impact throughout and across the field, plus kicked the equivalent of 4 goals. BoG for mine.

Also, in the final quarter, McCluggage ignored him about 30m out directly in the front when he bombed a goal from 55.

Then Bailey broke out of the middle and had a ping himself that bounced at a right angle which was mopped up by a Geelong defender.

Could have have quite easily kicked 5.6

I like opening round. Think its great for the clubs in non-traditional markets.
I don't think there is anything wrong with opening round or even starting footy with games in non-traditional markets. It is a great way to grow the game. The way the AFL went about it is what annoys me and probably most other people.
They do it because the NRL is in Vegas but waits until the NRL is back from Vegas to do the games. They then still have the 'traditional' opener of Richmond v Carlton and act as if that is the first game of the season still. I think people feel like the AFL is trying to treat them like idiots by still having round 1 be in traditional footy states so as not to upset the 'traditionalists.'

Guys like Dermott shouldnt be introduced as "5 time night premiership player" because players dont have the chance to win them anymore
Hes the only campaigner that ever gets introduced as a night time premiership player. Didn't anyone else ever play in any? Or does Dermott write his own intros?

TBH its only Eddie I ever picture saying it too

Although some of them "5 timer" and stuff

Apologies if this ain't original.

I wonder whether Carlton wasn’t overly hurt by the draft bans they received for the salary cap breaches.

Had they not been stripped of all those picks in 2002/2003 IMHO they would’ve been too good in 2005 - 2007 to finish as low on the ladder as they did to have the picks to land Marc Murphy, KPF Josh Kennedy, Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kreuzer and #3 at the ND in 2007. With Kennedy and #3 used to acquire Chris Judd.

Thus there is no world in which the Blues have Goddard & Wells and the player taken (or traded for) with the #5 ND selection in 2003 and the early 2003 PSD selection … AND Chris Judd, Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kreuzer.

In a nutshell - Carlton was kept crappier for longer which ultimately made them better.

I'm not a huge fan of State of Origin coming back & would rather see more international rules. SOO feels pointless if it's not a carnival. We're a national game now and excluding all but two states for it is silly, plus Victoria will be too strong. There's a reason why Metro and Country exist at u18 level.
International rules has more opportunity to grow the game.

Not sure if unpopular, but get rid of that horrid "STEEEEEND" rule and make the protected area a lot more linear and smaller like it use to be, because the ball carrier gets far too much protected space. I don't know why anyone would think that getting rid of the pressure on the ball carrier is a good thing, I use to love seeing players get psyched out or fumbling the ball even when they had unimpeded space due to mental pressure.

Very popular with a large section of the community, however it needs to be said because that abomination of a rule still has its defenders

Which ultimately amounted to **** all either way

Is it unpopular to say that I don't immediately hate the new final 10 system? It's far too early for it, yes (should've waited for Team 20 to join, having more than half the league qualify for finals is nonsense) and I hate how the teams are reseeded after the Wildcard Weekend but otherwise...

Once it was 18 teams, I wanted the finalist teams to be expanded, but just to 9 and in 4 weeks, no wild card.

Ideally I'd like to see SOO and International rules rotated

Every second year you have a an Origin match up between any two of Vic--SA--WA

Every other year you have an International Rules Series

Obviously Victoria has a lot more talent at their disposal but I think the actual major reasons for the Vics being split at u18 level is to give more lads the chance at exposure at that level because the talent pool is so big in Victoria

But at senior level it's more cyclical as to where the best players are from relatively, although obviously through weight of numbers Victoria are going to be able to put out the best side out of anyone a lot more often, it's not always guaranteed. Various times in the past it has been proven that the best 18 that either WA or SA has been better than the best 18 Vic could provide...again as I said it's not often but it has happened. Heck as little as 9-10 years ago I would've backed WA to beat Vic in Perth when they would have been able to put out a team which would have included the peak versions of....Buddy Franklin, Josh Kennedy, Alex Rance, Nic Nat, McGovern, Fyfe, Priddis (maybe Eddie Betts also) etc

The stand rule. Classic example of a solution in search of a problem. Players and Umpires have now voted with their feet. It's largely irrelevant now and will likely be axed halfway through the year when its new bs interpretation results in a match-winning 50m penalty and causes mass-outrage.
