This year is a bad one. Only one close game being Freo and Gold Coast

GWS vs Hawthorn is already an underrated gem.

7 goals the margin with 7 minutes left in the third quarter. Suddenly eroded away in the blink of an eye. GWS hit the front early in the last. Takes a Hawks double goal with 6 minutes left to push the margin beyond 2 goals.

Also, despite not necessarily being thrillers, both prelims were massive spectacles in front of huge crowds.
And weren't blow-outs by any means.

The unfortunate part is that I feel like Geelong win on Saturday in excess of 50 points with their eyes closed to cap it all off.

On the flipside, 2022 was on track to be the all time greatest finals series.

And then the GF happened :(
Same thing with 1994. Brilliant, brilliant opening week. A couple of big upsets in the second week. One of the all-time great preliminary finals...

... then an absolute wet fart of a Grand Final from a side that had already spent all its petrol tickets just getting there.

Both grand final winning margins were 80 points or more

We shouldn't really have won that game against North in '94. They should have been out of sight by quarter-time, and a free kick count of 13-32 is stretching credibility...
Cats essentially played their GF in the Prelim vs North (A Gary Ablett Sr goal after the siren) then blown out by 80 to the Eagles in a rematch of the same teams from 2 years earlier.

2000 & 2025

Alongside 2019 and 2023, 2025 is one of only 3 seasons in the past 10 where BOTH preliminary finals were genuine contests.

In fact, most seasons historically have one close prelim and one blow-out or cruisy victory.

Geelong were still easily the better team last weekend, but Hawthorn managed to fight back on two separate occasions in the second half and put some slight doubt into the result.

This year's been more of a meh finals series than an out and out shit one. There's actually been few blowouts and a number of the games have been interesting, it's just lacked that one true cracker that defines a series (GC/Freo perhaps the closest?)

Still a better finals series thus far than 2017, 2015, 2008 and 2000 to name just a handful, but it does need a great GF to drag it up.

Hold on, what was wrong with 2015?

3/4 of the first week results could have gone either way. The Dogs/Crows elimination final is a classic.

Fremantle vs Hawthorn was also a fantastic preliminary final. Was a high octane game of football, and we only sealed the contest late in the piece.

Was it just because it was the third consecutive year of Hawthorn dominance? I could imagine that Grand Final being a slog for neutrals too.

Maybe? Probably more that none of the games were too close after Week 1 and the GF being a damp squib that felt a bit NID. Maybe I was being too harsh though, but the only good week was perhaps the least important one.

How was GC Freo not a true cracker? It's a final for the ages.

People saying this year's finals series hasn't been good.....are you mental?

Pies v crows wasn't a classic but it was intense and heated....had intrigue

Giants v Hawks was an epic

Suns v dockers was an uber epic

The prelims were two high quality matches that weren't settled until the last quarter

I get some people might be bitter about their own sides short comings this year but c'mon this year's finals have been fine
