Hird and Thompson have got an outfit that was coming from further back in the pack than us believeing in themselves , playing to a plan and winning games ... that may or may not peter out but they are no better than us.

This is why i get sooo frustrated ... its about the now . Many of the so called "top ranked" sides are not travelling well and have some serious cracks in thier foundations ... there is a core of 4-6 teams that are just plain shithouse ... right "NOW"... there is an opportunity to make some inraods and make the finals this year ...

We are on the verge of missing a real opportunity to gain some real self belief . Right now , we could have won quite a few games of footy but as has been the case historically with our football club , just missing opportunities that we realistically could have taken ... last night is just another example .

The culture in the place has always been develop for the future. Look at losses and pencil in future wins. I agree with you.

I think as we showed last night that we are as good as Essendon but Essendon could do something in the finals by taking the moment whereas I dont see us doing anything to suprise. You would never see us doing what Collingwood did in 2002 or Hawthorn 2008.

Too much having to take your opportunties when it presents in that for us.

Wallace was never about teaching players to take a moment. It was all about positives and projecting success years down the track. His legacy is still in the group and the DeWallacing has many layers that need to be weeded out.

You guys did great and well done for coming back, but blaming the umpires? Really? They put the whistle away for most of the game. In the first half, we did pretty good to not give away many free kicks.

Essendon were better in the first half and Richmond were better in the second half. That doesn't mean that Richmond were better on the night because they came back. It was Essendon's to lose and we held on. Forgot all about the first half it seems.

Free kick count was 15-10 Essendon's way. To me, that shows that they weren't paying many free kicks that night. There were many that should have been paid for us, but I didn't really care because they weren't paying it for Richmond as well.

Anyways good luck for the rest of the year and looking forward to our round 22 clash. Always a good game against the Tigers

I'm over blaming the umpires also. They're shit consistently. Week in week out they make some appallingly bad decisions. Week in week out they also make decisions that are completely correct, and in real-time, you wonder how they do it. It's fine to watch replays and go "yep, good decision" (which happens, admit it), but they can never be in the perfect position to see everything and the boundary umpires need to be able to assist the field umpires as well and blow the whistle if needed.

I don't know if there's a 'senior' umpire on the ground that over-rules the others, but if a decision is made but the boundary umpire knows it's wrong, he should be able to blow the whistle and change the decision and the field umpire should just deal with it.

Of course that just complicates things, but IMHO if you reduced the number of field umpires (is more than 2 really needed?) and gave the boundary umpires more power.. it might plug the blind spots? Worth a NAB cup trial at least.

Saying that, that last quarter incident was a bloody tackle to the Tigers. For Essendon to go on from an incorrect disposal and goal is extremely bloody frustrating. For a umpiring howler to shift the momentum in a game is what fans hate.

Stanton had 30 possessions and kicked 3 goals - but yeah he's obviously average and has been very poor this year all up.

As for the Tiges - really think you blokes are going places, but think you lack depth and as a consequence have some players who are not quite up to it. Your mids as a group are right up there in the league and individually have some players in there who basically all other clubs are envious of. The upshot of this is that you have some killer but the rest is filler.

Acknowledge you outplayed us for parts of the 2nd half the other day, however you only had one more scoring shot than us and we also missed some very easy shots at goal.

Clearly you have got a lot right now off-field - recruiting someone like Maric is great work for example, Dimma is the right bloke etc - and if there is stability at the club (something you are not known for) its onwards and upwards for the Richmond Tigers.

And yeah before you claim you are streets ahead of us which some of you seem to be claiming in this thread maybe you should try to make a finals series first. Admit you are much closer to us than our respective ladder positions reflect but sheesh, you have to walk before you can run.

Carlton will never be a true contender unless they get something both Richmond and Essendon have: a key forward that gives opposition defences something to worry about. Losing Kennedy and Fev, while understandable at the time, has terminally hurt their premiership chances IMO.

Interesting read. I thought we were disadvataged quite signifcantly last year in regards to umpiring. But I guess once the emotion dies down you just get on with it. I mean what can you do?

Obviously not having any key forward that is willing to lead and jump at the ball (not naming names ) dosen't help but Essendon's counter attacks from our missed chances killed us.

The Dons don't really have a great list but somehow it clicks (I think our best players are better than theirs). But they all compete and are a team that spreads very well and moves the ball exceptionally.

Tigers are clearly going in right direction, Hardwick and team are doing great job. We were rolled due to forward line way out of form, plus we went into game 1 big man short. Both Jack and Miller were easy targets, not 1 forward played any where near able, we have gone from asking for effort to now sick of good loses. Not sure were Dirkez, Griffes, Post of Vickery are but may have been idea to evan try Elton? no longer easy beats.

I think our list is in pretty good shape, with our midfield our obvious strength.

Funny last year I thought like most people our defence was the major concern, but with Grimes looking like he will be a jet and Rance really improving this year (especially his kicking) it is our forward line that I am rally concerned about.

Just think Miller and King aren't really up to it, losing patience with Vickery & don't even get me started on Riewoldt. Barely playing like a B grader at the moment.

We have got quality kids coming through which will take time. But I think playing for a power forward who actually leads, and jumps at the ball instead of looking for a body to grapple with (T Cloke would be ideal) will help us in taking advantage of all of the possession and Inside 50's we get these days.

In actual fact, it's historically been more likely to see top teams go on with it. I'm assuming you're taking last year as your guide. Your entitled to your opinion, but know that it's utterly baseless.

How do you figure? Your offensive game-plan seemed to consist of bombing it to the square. What specifically would you nominate as ways in which we were outcoached?

I think Richmond were exceptional. However in that third quarter most of the goals came from stupid turn-overs by Essendon players, who got ahead of themselves. Yes, that's down to pressure, so that's fine, but I wouldn't expect us to do that week in week out.

Poor kicking is often the result of fatigue.
Especially in the final 10 minutes of a match.
It is remarkable how much harder it is to kick a goal from 35m after you've done 10 laps of a footy field immediately beforehand. I have tried this.
I think our list is no longer woefully short on actual talent. Going forward I'd have Cotchin, Deledio or Martin before any midfielder on Essendon's list in terms of pure ability.
But I still don't think the players' endurance (mental and/or physical) is up to the level of the richer clubs such as Essendon, Adelaide, Collingwood, Geelong, et al.

I admired Essendons ability to come back and win the game, but it was the Tigers inability while the foot was on their throat, to press harder that cost them the game. Kicking inaccuracy and our younger list cost us the game.

Your side barely had a touch for quite a high percentage of the second half and truth be told, Essendon only just scraped home due to persistance, a howler of an umpiring decision and mistakes by our players. Perhaps I should have clarified my statement earlier, which is that if the same thing happens next week to some extent, and the week after by the Essendon players - that sort of thing is contagious so hopefully Hird and co. recognise this and haven't glossed over it to the playing group. A full strength Geelong or Collingwood would have taken that opportunity and smashed Essendon by 8 goals.

There were a couple of terrible decisions by the umpires, no surprise there but for the part of the game where Essendon were winning, they were first at the ball so you will always get the majority of free kicks doing that. /tips hat

When we turned it around and we were first at the ball, surprise surprise, we started getting the free kicks and even a 50m. Once the Tigers raised their commitment to getting to the ball first, well we all saw it - we had 14+ scoring shots on goal to pretty much 0 and even got in front.

I think Essendon also had a better sub option, which helped immensely when Fletcher went off.
