So, in an article I read recently it was suggested that with the right mental capacity and training, dream control is possible. I have no idea whether this is complete bullsh*t, or a plausible concept, but I found it interesting none-the-less.
The article described the idea of slowly becoming more and more aware of your mind in a dream state, and eventually being able to control this, to an extent.
So my question is, what is the first thing you would do if you realised you were in a dream and able to control what was occurring? Kill the boss? Rob a bank? Sleep with a co-worker?

Are you talking about lucid dreaming? If so, it's pretty awesome.

Easiest in the mornings, i've found.

I'm not sure, can you control what is happening in that state? If so, what have you got up to? :thumbsu:

Yeah. I have only done it a couple of times, but none have been very exciting. Once I just walked around my house :p.

Another time I was at my old high school, but there were criminals taking over it. Sort of like that movie Toy Soldiers, haha.

Well in my own dreams I usually feel like I'm controlling my own actions...

I sometimes go to sleep with a particular dream in mind, so for example I have this whole zombie apocalypse "saga" (series of dreams) where I think about the end of whatever the last dream was and it kind of takes off from there...

If I want to control other people, I tend to dream up some extremely far fetched idea where I can do it via switching into their bodies somehow, usually it involves technology, sometimes aliens just "give me the power" etc.

For daydreaming, I tend to find I might "feel" the dream as well, so if (for example) I dream that I won the premiership, then I feel exhilarated.

Daydreams are probably the easier to control once you get into that state actually, I've tricked my mind into thinking that the ground was moving in a way only water can (you know when you drop something into water, you see all the ripples, yea that). The thing about the daydream state is that usually you take what you see around you and turn it into something (In the premiership example, I could just be at an oval which has goal posts).

Definitely. I've never had a lucid dream at night. It's always been in the mornings, as I'm about to wake up.

It's always after I've had a really good sleep. Maybe it's my brain having a more relaxed, slower transition from sleep to consciousness. I'm just speculating, though.

For the OP, lucid dreaming is just controlling your dream. In my experience, I've walked to certain places or run from certain people. But I can barely change the environment. So it's being thrust into a situation, yet you can make choices in the environment – like a computer game, I guess.

I'm not educated in this field. But perhaps you can induce someone into sleep. So, a regular 'depth' of sleep. Then, monitor the brain activity. When the brain activity indicates a dream is occurring, you could bring this person out of their sleep. I suppose it would have to be a slow awakening. Lucid dreaming

I had never had one, and wasn't aware of it at all until I read a thread on GD about a year ago (searching is never a bad idea).

And you can do some things to increase the likelyhood of having one, which I sort of did. Mostly just being aware that you could be dreaming is what worked for me.

The first couple of times (when in a dream) I would start to think 'maybe I'm dreaming' but at that moment would wake up, and then one time I was able to realise I was dreaming and stay in it.

For me at least it turns out that as soon as I realised I could control my dream, my imagination went out the window, and I pretty much didn't do anything very interesting. But it was pretty cool just experiencing it.

I remember as a kid I would always have the same 8-10 dreams and eventually I could figure out in my sleep that I was dreaming. The next progression is that I was able to control my actions within the dream. When I was 10-12, whenever I knew I was having a nightmare, in my dream I would continually try and pry my eyes open. Whether I was doing it in real life I have no idea. I used to love it, I could never control what was going on around me or the situation I found myself in, but I was able to do whatever I want with no ramifications.

I hardly dream anymore and if I do I have diminished control over my actions compared to what I used to be able to do

not 100%. lucid dreaming is just knowing that you're dreaming. not necessarilly being able to control your dream.

lucid dreaming is fairly common. i know i'm dreaming a lot, but i can't control what's going on. but it does make it better if freaky stuff happens because you know it's not real. interstingly the times when i was lucid dreaming the most happened when i was taking drugs the most often between about 2008 and 2010....

on a few occasions i've been able to have a very minor level of control, but this wasn't through any sort of training or mental capacity... it just happened to be me thinking "hmmm this person is annoying me, this is definately a dream, maybe i can just make them **** off....." and i never "saw" them again... or something similar to that effect.

Ohh. That's a bit of a let down.

Don't you only remember the dreams you wake up during? So wouldn't that mean all dreams are lucid dreams? Because if you don't know you're dreaming, you don't acknowledge it's existence. Yes? No?

Do you guys dream less as you get older? I've been dreaming less and less of late. I suppose there are other external factors (less sleep, different diet, alternate thoughts). But it seems a lot of people dream less as they get older.

Im getting older as you say. Still dream a lot. Probably more.

no because there are plenty of times i dream and i'm 100% positive it's real until i wake up... even some times when the situation i'm in is competley redicolous.... but every now and then, though not really much for some time, you're dreaming and you know 100% that you're dreaming. sometimes you know because the situation you're in is completely impossible to be real (arnold schwarzenneger is chasing you down the street as if he is the tx in terminator), somtimes the dream is quite lifelike but for some reason you just know you're dreaming. it's a pretty bizaare thing.

and most of the time, for me anyway, you have no control. it's pretty weird, but also pretty cool.

The idea for the movie Inception came from Lucid Dreaming.

This has only happened to me once.... it was really werid to be honest. I was having a normal dream and I was getting frustrated at something that was happening. Then I remember thinking... hang on a minute this is a dream, and then I just started doing what I wanted. Was a really weird experiance

I do it a lot. Easiest way to do it is in the morning after a good sleep in, just go back to sleep thinking of your dream that you awoke with and take control.

This is interesting, despite being from tumblr.

I CONSTANTLY start dreams where I get myself into deep shit.

Then while I'm dreaming I realise "Wait, I'm dreaming. **** that was close". Then I automatically move onto another dream.
