Movie What's the last movie you saw? (7)

If you watched one a night for a year you could easily get that. Some would probably watch two a night as well although it’s harder now if they are watching tv Shows now too.

Which is true. These people I follow work in the media/film industry so they attend all the film circuits and get screeners.

Good shout whoever mentioned ARLINGTON ROAD
The gut-punch of all gut-punches, i literally wanted to vomit.

someone else mentioned POPEYE

Can remember my dad making me hide under a blanket in the rear footwell at Marion Twin Drive-in to see this.
I would've been 4, only thing i remember is him punching an octopus up into the sky
You wanna actually vomit watch the mist.

Arlington road is a ****ing banger though. Where is it streaming JHF1870 might give it a rewatch

Wake up dead man: a Knives out tale

Absolutely loved it. I think it balanced the seriousness/procedural element of the first and the caper comedy wackiness of the second fantastically. O’Connor and Craig’s scenes in particular are brilliant and Rian making the church a character itself with lighting and shot composition was awesome to watch.

Mila Kunis was a weak link imo, re cast that part and it’s probably a 10.

I don’t think Mila Kunis’ character needed to exist at all. Same with Cailee Spaeny’s (which pains me to say because she’s one of my favourite young actors around).

Andrew Scott’s was borderline.

The Mastermind (2025)

The movie does a good job of depicting 1970s Massachusetts and I liked the jazz style score but that's about it. It's hard to feel any empathy for the main character. His rationale for stealing some paintings is poorly explained. He makes bad decisions and his life spirals. Slow pacing can be good but I nearly fell asleep. There's not really an ending, the movie just stops.

Another one where the critics love it but it seems like they are gushing over what the director says in interviews rather than the content of the movie.

3/10

I think his rationale is more ambiguous than poorly explained. I don't know, seems a mix of the boredom of being a jobless son of affluence and the arrogance of thinking this means you're immune from ill consequences. Even at the end, when he gets the lifeline in Canada, he sees himself as being above that. The ending is sudden, but I thought it a pretty great one, to be honest.

Genuine question for all

Are you watching movies or have movies on in the background while doing other stuff?

My movie watching is confined to the couch with my phone away. I may bring up cast to check who is who but its mostly away

I don’t use my phone if I’m watching a movie, the only time I use my phone while watching is if I need to check on something.

Phone away unless its something that I’m only watching as background noise or because I have FOMO, not because I’m actually invested in the movie.

Genuinely focused when watching a movie. If it's an action or horror genre and there's the meddling parts I will probably scroll on my phone a bit. I'll never sit through a bad bad movie and scroll on my phone because I'll just stop watching it entirely. TV shows definitely do tend to scroll a lot more.

Hmmm, I think the character as an offset to Benoit made sense, it could have been cut back though.

Don’t agree on the others, they make up different important aspects of the radicalization aspect of the faith imo.

Depends on the movie, I’ll chuck a rewatchable (iykyk) on for background noise and to jump into the scenes I love if I’m working, working out, cleaning the house. We also have a lot of kids movies on that are background.

If it’s something new I haven’t seen or really want to dial into devices are generally put away.

Frankenstein - really enjoyed it. Del Toro once again successfully using horror/fantasy to tell a touching human story.

The changes from the book worked well. Victor’s relationship with his abusive father and then seeing same behaviour from Victor to his creation showing how a lack of compassion and humanity can impact you.

The creature also less cunning than the book. Really easy to feel sympathy for him and could feel how he craved for affection and company. Thought Elordi did a great job expressing emotions just with his eyes under all that make up.

Scenery/ cinematography outstanding as always with Del Toro. - 7.5/10

I give it a 6-7. It was ok but benoit didnt do much and it didnt have as many twists as the others. Character acting was brilliant however. Nothing beats the first which was a 9.5. The second one was also a 6-7.

This is a mile above the second. I think it’s better than the first because it’s less about the whodunnit

I downloaded it a while back.

I enjoyed them all. They do have a certain aesthetic that is addictive.
Yeh I did too, i just think the second was almost more a pure comedy and didn’t have the same nuance and through story. The first and this one use the location as a character too. Some of the shots of and inside the church were top tier cinematography and film making, the first meeting of Jud and Benoit in particular

don’t think I’ve ever had a phone in my hand whilst watching a film

never have them on in the background, only watch when I can give my full undivided attention

but that’s just me, each to their own, do what works for you and can be managed, and is most rewarding

I don’t tend to eat anything at the cinema, but will often have a meal with a majority of tv shows (with exceptions, recently stuff like Dark Matter and ER were no-food zones). I don’t tend to watch (or read) anything when I’ve had a drink of alcohol either, that’s more music/social.

I watched 61 new and old movies this year. Which I think is a personal record. But then I see proper cinephiles on twitter and they're logging between 300-400 a year. Crazy

I understand people have different lives but that's far too many imo for a normal person with a job. I think a lot of people just watch shit to log it and that defeats the whole purpose tbh but good for them I suppose. I did 145 I think, not sure if I can match that this year but we'll see.
